I do both still photography and video, and Sony is, in my opinion, the best way to go. My previous camera was the Sony a7II, which was a good camera for me to learn on, and my first mirrorless camera. But I wasn't happy with the image quality. I could never get those sharp shots, and there was a lot of moire/noise that drove me nuts. I debated upgrading for a long time, but just couldn't justify the price since photography is just a hobby for me. That was, until I saw how cheap this camera had become. I'm not one of those people who needs the latest and greatest technology. I had my eye on this camera for several years. I just couldn't afford the $3k price tag. So when I saw that this had come down to a little over $1k, I knew it was meant to be. And let me tell you, I am soooo happy I upgraded! This camera is a BEAST! The image quality is so sharp! The 42 megapixel sensor allows you to crop in, which is great for me because I only have a prime 35mm lens right now. I am absolutely blown away with the quality this camera puts out! If you're on the fence about this camera, just know you're not gonna get a better image for this price! It's definitely worth it! I love this camera frame but I will say it's downside is it's age so not alot of software benefits like newer camera and the slow shutter speed. But as long as your not doing sport photography this camera is great!

Camera was not functional-- called Sony and seemed it had issues with the motherboard. Barely any of the buttons responded to being pressed. I was given a full refund, but a little sketchy that this product came in a completely dysfuntional state

    • I have 2 Sony a7iii and the a7Rii. Why?

As the title suggest I have probably one of Sony's biggest turning points in the Alpha line up. The A7iii. Not one but 2 of them. So why do I want the a7Rii? Start with the basics. Build. Full all sides covered in Magnesium alloy for strength and weight. Highly weather resistant. A shutter rated for 500,000 actuations. Sensor. BSI CMOS 42mp sensor that is still rated highly on DXOmark sensor ratings for digital cameras. Contrast to the Sony a7iii. Reinforced Magnesium composite body with reinforced frontal plate for long and heavy focal length lenses. Sides and rear are mostly composite. 200,000 rated actuation rated shutter. Still building on the amazing BSI CMOS sensor albeit with 24mp. Rated also well by DXOmark sensor performance. So if I have this camera I talk about here, why the a7iii cameras then? Great question. One word. Production. I need a fast accurate focus solid camera with amazing dependability. Dual Card slots for my captures and security. Long life in field. The Z-100 battery along with the battery grips give me all day shooting with confidence and no battery anxiety. Amazing compatibility with the FE mount lens system with 3rd party and Sony's too. I shoot Enterprise, and FOH HOW events, and the low light performance also is excellent. 2 bodies mean I have each optimized for the focal range each needs. Great. Now the a7Rii. I need a camera that I can go out with. Have great resolution for my landscapes. Cropping for detail. Incredible dynamic range so as I do my LUTS and or color grading and other tuning like on RAW Therapee. The a7Rii has plenty of latitude for my creations for me, and my choice few I may share. I use the battery grip because of the limited time life of the 50 series batteries. I still carry 2 more beyond just in case. No place to recharge after all as I use the a7Rii for my remote on vacation or no stress just take it easy outdoors or museum indoor shoots. The Sensor gives me excellent low light performance (my a7iii is better) but still for what I do the results are stellar. It is true that the Auto Focus is good enough for 3rd party lenses not even of the FE mount using adapters. I use a Sigma adapter to Canon EF lenses. Easy as can be without the high cost associated with Grand Master Sony stuff. I have mostly L lenses purchased used. Good lenses, good results they say. My favorite with the a7Rii is also how it manages video. My impromptu video shoots outdoors do very well capturing wildlife, and water falls and much more in splendid detail. Loves and annoyances. The build inspires confidence without weighing me down. I am an Ex Canon 1DX user by the way. The Battery Grip with a the Canon 28-135mm lens is a good start or my 70-200mm for more reach yet still without getting too big. Auto focus is wonderful though again my a7iii will beat it on Auto Focus. Still, when I am on my personal journeys the a7iii will stay home, and the a7Rii will go along with me. Funny thing is the a7Rii with battery grip and lens is a bit lighter than the a7iii with its battery grip and lens. Most odd but true thing and when every once counts on the out of doors that is big. Better weather sealing too. If I get a few drops on the a7Rii, I should be okay. Not so much I have confidence that the a7iii would go that way. Annoyances. The typical I was made for engineers menu structure. Some of the worst I have seen ever. But, set everything up once and use custom buttons and carry on. Awful battery life in the field. You have to carry spares because the battery life is abysmal. Compared to the a7iii it is lightyears behind. So just include a battery grip and spares and carry on once again. Would have liked 2 card slots too. Only 1. Other than those, the a7Rii is such an amazing camera all the way here to 2026 and beyond. It is a pleasure to have such an amazing camera for so little money. I got mine used for about $550.00 from a camera dealer. I bought the grip for under $70.00 used also. Value today is off the charts. Purchase carefully and wisely. Buying new for most is a rich person's game or someone making a living and needs new for what they do. I can't remember the last new camera I bought or any of its ancillaries. Always purchase from reputable and authorized dealers of the product when you can. The a7Rii remember was over a $3000.00 when launched. It still holds up today as one of photography's great bargains. ... show more
