I wanted a device that I could add to my mother-in-law’s TV to improve the awful sound, and requiring zero fiddling after setup. A device that required occasional care and feeding/configuration is out of the question for this eighty year old user. The initial setup requires quite a bit of knowledge about downloading and using phone apps, and about WIFI setup and networking basics, and about Bluetooth, and about TV remote controls, so I would say it was not easy. After setup, however, it just works. My 80 year old mother-in-law could never install this thing in a million years, but she is using it daily. This is because she doesn’t have to interact with it. This is Sonos quality and versatility. I’ve read some of the negative reviews saying it’s not loud enough…they are correct, if it’s a large room! The room I have it in is a 17x14 bedroom, and this fills it with clear speech, good but NOT overpowering bass, and well balanced mids and highs. I have the Sonos surround sound with subwoofer, beam, and two ONE speakers for a larger room, which makes sense. It’s not going to blow you back in your seat like the surround system does. Im very surprised and the sound quality on this bar. Sonos is the leader in sound as far as I am concerned but this just doesn't meet their usual standards. The volume even at maximum is lower than my tv speakers. I hooked it up to my tv in basement and it cant drown out the dehumidifier even at max volume. The bass is very weak as well. Honestly the sound quality on my tv is the same if not better. It is no where near the quality of sonos play bar I have on my other tv. Highly disappointed. ... show more

Bought this for use with Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speakers as surrounds. Connected to Xbox Series X. Great little setup for gaming. It's a small space and no need for ATMOS, nothing overly fancy but I needed at least surround sound. This setup checks all the boxes for quality at a budget.

The dialogue on movies streamed (like Netflix) is terrible on any TV I've tried. I give up on many movies and turn it off. Sonos improves the sound quality, but only somewhat. I was hoping for some magic. Better but not great.

    • Excellent TV sound, if you don't want "home theater"

I've been using this for a few months, and I'm very pleased. Most TVs these days have poor sound, but the alternatives available are trying to make your living room sound like a movie theater. I may be odd in this regard, but I don't want that. I don't want booming bass when I'm watching a normal TV show. It might be fine for a big-screen action movie, but maybe not for a detective show. Sonos may not like the idea of the Ray being something less than "the movie theater at home," but it gave me exactly what I want - really good sound, including some dialogue enhancement, without going overboard. It was very easy to install, it is quite configurable, and I for one do not want smart-speaker functionality in my home - I'd rather not have microphones that can potentially be hacked to listen to my family. So, the Ray is perfect for my needs. (For the record, I tried the Sonos Beam a year before, and did not like it, exactly because in effect it did too much.) If you do find you want more bass, you can always add one of the Sonos subwoofers, like the Sub or Sub Mini. ... show more

I bought this for my brother as a retirement gift. He already has Sonos speakers in other areas of his home but was listening to the sound directly from his TV. YUCK. He set it up quickly (without doing to full room setup) and loved it. Then he took the time to pair the speaker to the room and was blown away with the surround sound effect from a single soundbar.
