  • Sonos Rocks!
Style: Black set
I guess I SHOULD have given Sonos Play:1s only four stars because of the ridiculous price they charge! That aside, I'm extremely pleased with these speaker's sound quality, control software and overall functionality. The Sonos products do what no other product does(AFAIK). They allow you to play music thru-out your living space wirelessly. Further, you can select speakers(other Sonos products) to play different tracks simultaneously. You can choose songs stored on a PC on the network, from another device like smartphone or tablet. You can choose songs from your music library to form a cue. You can adjust EQ. You can adjust volume or mute, pause/continue, cue fwd/rev, etc You can do all this from your PC, tablet or smart phone. How do you top this? SEVERAL people can perform all these functions SIMULTANEOUSLY. (which gets interesting when your child is home from college LOL) If you ask me, it's a miracle! "Ah but, setup must be difficult!", you say. Nope, setup was a snap. Once unpackaged and plugged in, I downloaded the software and configured the speakers in less than 30 minutes. REALLY! The software is simple and intuitive. Cons: Price I wish they had a better equalizer program. The current one has a basic treble/bass slide bar. I wish they had outdoor speakers. I wish they had wireless headphones. Note: Sonos products all require AC electric source i.e. plug them in. They're wireless, not battery operated; a good thing IMHO. My experience: (Play:1 content 2 paragraphs down) MY highest PRIORITY was to be able to play music off my PC located in the 26'x26' kitchen/LR/DR open floor plan, over a set of decent quality speakers. The thought of integrating the whole house seemed wonderful, albeit unattainable. We listen to a variety of music, but mostly rock, jazz and jazz fusion. Occasionally, we like to blast it. How loud? "loud enough to NOT hear myself sing" LOL. I wanted to "hit it out of the park", so I wound up buying 2 Play:5s and Sonos Sub. First, I set up the Play:5s to see if/how they would work. They immediately reminded me of Apple products with they're ridiculous gratuitous packaging. I mean the boxes alone must cost $25! LOL As I said, the setup was a snap. I downloaded the app from the Sonos site*. It loaded quickly and I was on my way. Setup** was a couple of screens similar to pairing blue tooth stuff. What did take a while, was importing my 10K track music library(*** and there's a serious issue here. see below). As for sound quality, I'd rate the Play:5 speakers as "very good", to "excellent". If one considers the size of the format, ease of setup and they are wireless, I'd say "excellent"! I paired the speakers as stereo and listened to flawless music stream for about an hour. The bass response was so good, I almost didn't open the sub. I'm glad I did! While a huge expense for a seemingly frivolous component, the Sonos Sub is amazing! It definitely adds another dimension to the system. Several days later, I bought the Sonos starter set (2 Play:1s). I put one in the 12'x18' bedroom and one in the 24'x30' garage. Admittedly, these speakers do not deliver the sound quality of the 5's, but when you consider the size of the format and functionality, they absolutely rock! Describing things like sound quality is tricky at best. Here's what I'd say based on my listening experience; When you listen to the Play:1s, you will be amazed at the volume and clarity of music that emanates from this tiny package(about the size of a coffee can). I was blasting Led Zep in my garage via only 1 speaker and it was surprisingly loud, and with little or no distortion. On the other hand, if you expect "high fidelity", I'd go for the Play:5. It's the best Sonos has to offer. At this time, I would NOT recommend the Play:3s. I've listened to them and I think they're not appreciably better then the P1. I'm saving my $ for more Sonos products! ------------NOTES---------------------------------------------- *I downloaded the app from Sonos. There's another app on the google app site which is rated rather low. I don't know if they are the same. **You need ethernet (hard wire) connection for the first Sonos product you install. Later, you can move remove the wire and move the speaker wherever you like. ***my ITunes PLAY LISTS did NOT import. The library is all there and the playlists titles are there, but the data within the playlists is erroneous and does not play. I'm on Sono's site attempting to fix this. WARNING, there appears to be NO real FIX at this time. UPDATE: I found an esoteric file "fix". It will work short term. If you're good with your PC file system, you can do it. Basically, you have to export each ITunes playlist, one at a time from ITunes software. If you're like me and constantly tweaking and updating your music library, this is terrible. FLASH! I was contacted by Sonos support regarding this post. I'll update. Update1:Sonos customer service contacted me several times. While they are polite and attentive, there's no fix for the ITunes playlist glitch. Update2:Two months into Sonos, I'd highly recommend buying two of each (whichever your wallet/needs dictate) for each room and pairing them as stereo. The quality and fill is much better. When purchasing additional products, I compared the P1 and P3. Frankly, when factoring in the cost, the P3s are not THAT much better than the P1s IMHO. For me, it's between the P1 and P5s. Forget the P3. Update3:During Christmas of 2015, Sonos offered a "starter set" consisting of two P1s for $350. Unfortunately, this offer has expired and the P1s are now only sold separately for $200 each. 1. If you search around(as I did), you may find them in stock somewhere. I found a set (02/19/16) at Best Buy. I know, BB sucks, but I did it and they're fine. 2.If you're really hot on the starter set thing, I'd suggest dropping a line to Sonos. Their CS is seems pretty open to feedback. Maybe if enough people show interest, they'll make them available again. ... show more

  • Expensive, but worth every penny.
Style: Black set
Hands down the best speakers I've ever owned. At this price tag you'd expect a lot out of these tiny speakers, and trust me, you get a lot. You will be surprised when you first listen to them, I can almost guarantee it. The bass is astounding, and the music is so crisp and clear I find myself hearing new components to songs I've listened to thousands of times. You'll also be amazed at just how loud these things get with no discernible distortion, and with two of them you can create a stereo pair for a truly unreal listening experience. They're controlled with an app you download on your smart phone, and as long as both the speakers and your phone can connect to the same wi-fi connection you can play individual songs, queue up songs in a playlist, or listen to internet radio stations from a good variety of supported apps such as Pandora, Spotify, Google Play Music, iHeartRadio, and more. Each speaker can be set up to represent the different rooms you have them sitting in, and can even play two different souces of music at the same time in different rooms! An undersold feature is how portable they are as well. Unplugging them and plugging setting them up in a different room only takes the speaker about 20-30 seconds to reset and can then stream music again, and setting them up in the first place or in a new home is fast, simple, and easy. The software is constantly being updated (which at times can be a bit tiresome) and the app sometimes will desync and make you wait, but really these are tiny complaints for what you get. Yes, this is a lot of money to pay for two small speakers, but I've never been happier with an electronics purchase in my life. I've had them for a few years now and they sound and perform exactly as when I bought them. If you're looking for a home music streaming setup, look no further. These are the speakers to get. ... show more

  • So happy with them!
Style: Black set
I wish I'd gotten them sooner! These are great speakers. I live in a ~900 sq. foot one bedroom apartment and tried two setups: paired L/R in my living/dining room, and one each in bedroom/living room. I settled on the two room setup, but they do sound really excellent as a L/R pair, and I may buy a third soon. With the two room setup, they fill my entire apartment with music even at 30% volume. It's clear and sounds great. The bass is not especially deep or impressive, if that is very important to you - the sub might be a good investment in the future. For now, I'm really happy with the sound. There's also a cool tuning feature, which is nice if you've got more than one speaker in the room. They are a breeze to get going - just plug in and follow the steps to get connected to your home wifi. The only issue I've had is that assigning the speakers to particular rooms in the software is not quite as intuitive as it should, or could, be. I hope they update the app in the future soon to fix that. My living room speaker says bedroom and vice versa, and I can't for the life of me fix it. It's not a big problem for a two room setup, but I can only imagine how irritating it would be if you had 3+ sonos all over a large house. All of the other settings are really easy to use. I love being able to put music from multiple sources together. Love that it has alarm settings and queueing. Pairing rooms was easy. Haven't had any issues with the wifi. Overall, I am super happy and ready to give Sonos all my money. ... show more

  • Easy to use, tons of radio choices, going to buy more
Style: Black set
I bought these speakers to replace a couple of Bose Soundlink Mini. We like to listen to radio (particularly NPR) and we use an ipad to connect via Bluetooth to the Mini. Very often our mornings involved 5 unhappy minutes of button pushing to try and pair the Bluetooth speaker with the ipad. Life is too short for that :) Also, if my wife wanted to listen upstairs and down, she would need to get 2 ipads involved. We also use Spotify for music in the same arrangement. It was my hope that the Sonos Play:1 would simplify that. I bought a 2 unit pair. As most reviewers note, the Sonos software is simple and intuitive. Setting up and running this is a breeze. There is no more Bluetooth pairing problems, you open up the ipad, click the app and you're good. Having multiple synchronized music sources is wonderful. We are planning a big party in the spring and we can imagine having music throughout the house. There are thousands of radio stations available including almost every NPR station and even a local independent FM music station we like. There is a bit of re-grouping involved when you unplug and move a speaker, but only a few clicks. Everytime I use the Trueplay tuning application it tells me that the speakers are already optimally place and there are no changes to make. I use this on my existing wifi network (no Boost), but my home network already had a remote repeater to ensure good coverage in the house. Once in a while I hear some static in the Spotify (which also sometimes happens with Spotify on my phone). I attribute that to network latency somewhere. If it happens a lot I will look into getting the Boost The sound is pretty good, better than the Soundlink Mini, better that a boom box. Probably on par with the full sized Bose Soundlink. Plenty good for casual music listening. I'm looking to add a couple of larger Sonos speakers (3s or 5s, not sure) for times when I want to focus on the music. I have not tried to pair this with my iTunes library yet and I don't really need an input jack, so that doesn't worry me. ... show more

  • Here are the things I love about the SONOS speaker system
Style: Black set
I purchased two Sonos PLAY:1's for myself for Christmas. I currently have them deployed in my living room, and one in my bedroom. The functionality of these speakers is really incredible - AND THAT'S WHAT YOUR PAYING FOR! Here are the things I love about the SONOS speaker system: 1) The speakers stream directly from your content sources (such as Spotify, Pandora, or other online streaming options). This completely frees up your device - which means less data usage, less battery drain, and no weird issues with your phone bugging out. You can control the speakers from your desktop (mac or PC) too. 2) Because the speakers stream directly from the sources and use your home wifi router, it's not using BLUETOOTH audio (from your device)- which was never intended to be a quality audio stream. Bluetooth was created primarily for voice applications, not high fidelity music. The streaming quality is higher. 3) I love being able to control individual zones, and volumes. I have my speaker volumes setup so when they are all grouped together (playing the same thing), as you walk from a big room to a smaller room the relative volume level is the same. 4) The "tuning" function actually makes a big different in the quality of the sound. I first setup my speakers and did not use it, then I tuned one of them. The quality difference was noticeable. 5) They look great. Modern. Sleek. And unassuming. These 5 reasons are why SONOS speakers are expensive compared to others. Now, what you ARE NOT PAYING FOR with these speakers is audio output quality. I am a professional audio engineer and I have been involved in high end audio in the studio but mostly live for over a decade. With that said, they do not sound great - just average. The product descriptions and some reviews talk about how loud they get (not very loud), and how much bass they put out (which they don't). For all intensive purposes, 125hz and below does not exists - and it typically doesn't in such a small box - but I didn't buy this box for thunder, I bought it for functionality and background music. If that's what your looking for, this product is PERFECT! The box will distort when turned up above 75% - which is another indicator of lower audio quality. If you richness, bass, bump, thud, or groove - these speakers alone will not deliver. But they are not designed too (even though their product description makes it sound like they do). Either get the SONOS 5 OR get the additional sub option. If your looking for low to medium background music, incredible functionality, music that won't bleed through your walls and make your neighbor mad, and a sleek form factor - this box is well worth the money. ... show more

  • A Bit Pricy, But So Worth It!
Style: Black set
I have tried several blue tooth and airplay speakers. The Bluetooth speakers didn't have much range and seem very limited. Airplay is just flakey and won't hold a solid Wi-Fi connection. After a couple of year's of frustration, I ended up wanting to throw a speaker through the window on Thanksgiving day, After reading lots of reviews here on Amazon, I decided to try a Sonos Play:5 speaker. What a difference! This speaker truly sounds great (to my admittedly unprofessional ears). It was nicely packaged, appears well built, and really packs a punch. It was so easy to set up. The app provides lots of source choices, including my iTunes library, most internet streaming services, and now Apple Music. They are unobtrusive in a room and might even be called handsome. The Sonos app is so simple and flexible. Even my wife (who is a technophobe) loves it. The Trueplay feature works very well and is easy to use to tune the speakers to a specific room. We now have four of the Play:5 speakers (in two paired sets). We also have a Play:3 speaker and six Play:1 speakers spread throughout the house. There is no easier way to add great-sounding music to every room in an older house. ... show more

  • Great product
Style: Black set
Quite expensive, but otherwise exactly what I was hoping for. I had heard about these on the Tech Guy podcast and thought they might work well to solve a problem my wife deals with (and which bothered me a bit). She enjoys listening to the radio while working in the kitchen or folding laundry and stuff like that in our bedroom. But reception was always spotty in both places. And she had complained that she liked listening to Pandora, but somehow her account had stopped working on the computer. I saw this Sonos set as a way to fix those problems and took a gamble with giving her some technology for Christmas. It's worked out even better than I expected. She loves the quality of the sound and reliability of the connection. And the simplicity of operation is similar to the iPhone, so even though she's quite technically challenged, it only took one brief lesson and she's using it without any problems or questions. Installation was very quick and easy, and pairing into a stereo set or separating for different rooms or different streams works very easily. ... show more

  • Premium Price but Worth It
Style: Black set
LOVE THESE! Don't hesitate to purchase these even at this premium! They un-box like an Apple product - first class down to every detail. Only downside is you'll want MORE for other rooms in your house!! I read all about SONOS for some time and finally decided to splurge and put these in a vacation home. The app-based interface is REMARKABLY simple and robust all at the same time. Setup is a breeze as the app walks you through step-by-step. Plenty enough sound for a small room like a kitchen or guest bedroom. For a living room or master bedroom, you'd be happier setting up a stereo pair - together two of these are pretty remarkable for the size and price. You can have less for less, but here you get more for more, and it's worth it. Just don't go listen to a demo of the new SONOS 5! The 5 is incredible but $$. If I had to choose for a large room, I'd choose one 5 over a pair of 1's. My next purchase is going to be their network box that let's you use the SONOS app to stream music to your existing hi-fi system. ... show more
