I really like this yarn winder. It makes “cakes” of yarn and is easy to use. It’s pretty durable and is lightweight. The size is a little small to hold a lot of yarn, but it’s good for smaller projects. It easily clamps on to a table for stability. It’s versatile in that it’s small and light enough to be portable, so great for travel. It’s a good value. This is a really useful little tool for anyone who crochets or knits regularly. I like to wind my yarn into balls before starting a project because I use a yarn bowl while working, and having the yarn neatly wound keeps it from rolling all over the place while I crochet or knit. Normally, winding skeins of yarn by hand takes a fair amount of time, so I decided to try this yarn winder, and I’m very happy I did. Once assembled and attached to my workbench, it made the process incredibly quick and easy. Within just a few minutes, I was able to wind a full skein into a neat yarn cake and get right to working on my project. It did take me a little time initially to figure out the setup, but the instructions were clear and everything assembled the way I expected it to. It attached securely to my work table and functioned exactly as described. What I appreciate most is that this tool cuts down on the preparation time so I can spend more time actually crocheting or knitting instead of manually winding yarn. I’ve only used it a handful of times so far, so I can’t fully speak to long-term durability yet, but it appears well made and sturdy for normal crafting use. At $16.99, I think it is fairly priced. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase and expect it will serve me well for a long time.

I got thus because my kiddo has been getting into knitting lately. Anyone who uses yarn knows the pain of trying to use a skein as bought from the store. Unfortunately, we were fairly disappointed in this yarn winder. The first issue is the clamp didn't work that well. It frequently fell off whatever surface it was attached to. This became rather inconvenient. The second problem is that the spindle kept falling off, and we needed to restring the eye sometimes. There is a definite learning curve when using the yarn winder. You need to pay attention to the tension and can't spin the spindle too fast. Once you figure that out, the yarn cakes are nice and tight.

This manual yarn winder has saved me so much time lately. Instead of having to wind up my frogged projects by hand, I just get to sit and twirl away. I will say that I’m having a bit of trouble with the clamp part as after a while it seems to come loose making the whole thing a bit unstable, but after tightening it down again it’s just fine. It’s kind of a pain to get it started but once you get going it’s a lot easier and takes a lot less attention. I think this is totally worth it as the amount of time I’m getting back is insane.

UPDATE: It's the Ides of March (15th) and I've wound over 30 pounds of #4 and #3 yarn so far, mostly 4. This little guy has performed like a champ. He's all plastic so I've been (somewhat) gentle but I see no reason why I couldn't get plenty of miles out of this yarn winder. The resulting cakes are lovely, just like the product photos, and storing them takes up so much less room than balls of yarn and unwound skeins. I'm so happy with this lovely little guy. What's especially nice is I had some balls of variegated yarn which I couldn't see all the colors of before, but in cake form I can see everything. Two amigurumi thumbs way up. _____________________ RIP Joann's. I'm still grieving. So now to justify my yarn addiction $$$ I pretty much have to buy the economy size. I think I can finally wrangle a center pull from those one pounders about 20% of the time at most and it takes awhile. So I was excited to try this yarn winder. I've never owned one before, I'm still pretty new to yarn-where-have-you-been-all-my-life. When this SOGCASE manual yarn winder was delivered this evening, I tore into the box, attached the spindle to the base, and clamped the winder onto the desk I'd already had chosen for setup. It's so easy you don't need instructions. Then I thought maybe I should at least glance at them, since I'd be writing this review. What did I learn? READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST. This is so easy to set up, it hardly needs instructions. Except for the first step. The yarn guide has to be swung into position. I did notice a review of this product with a photo where the person did the same thing as me, they had missed that step. I'm glad I did check out the instructions. The yarn guide moved into place fine, I didn't even have to unclamp the winder. I grabbed half a dozen balls and ends of yarn, set one up and started winding. I'm so ashamed to admit how fun this actually is to use. I forced myself to take a break to write this review because I've got about 60 jumbo skeins to go wild on, not the greatest self-control, and a preference to get my review written this month. I've only used this winder on medium #4 yarn and it worked perfectly. I've got 2, 3, and 6, and I know 5 and 6 are too thick according to the description but I'll give it a careful try with them. I do think it would work if you're gentle. I don't anticipate any problems with my 2 and 3. You're only supposed to wind 4 ounces at a time so it will take me 4 winds to do my one pounders. That means they'll end up cut about into quarters but I don't mind. I learned with use that when you first set the yarn in the grooves at the top of the spindle, you don't want too much extra overhang. It tends to get lost in the resulting cake and it's harder to find the center pull. The final cake looks precisely like the product images given. They are easy to pull off the winder and they keep their shape perfectly. I found it much easier to put the unwound yarn in a tall, clean plant pot while I wound it. I used one that is about 7 inches tall, one of the white opaque ones from this set: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G6ZRS4S3 Instructions are a diagram including written directions, very easy to understand. The yarn winder is plastic, reasonably sturdy but I intend to treat my new lovely gently. After I'm done winding every string-like thing I can find in the house, I will reluctantly store it away. Just for now. To keep it out of danger. Is it worth the money it costs? YES. I do think so.
