The photo is misleading in that it shows no guard ring which made me concerned that if I lost my balance, I could be impaled by it. I was happy to receive it with a guard. I bought a Ki ndling Cracker that had a ring about 7 inches in diameter for about 80 dollars or more with shipping. This new one had a diameter of about 9 inches for about 40 dollars which includes shipping. I have used it on one log, and it seems to perform as well as the Kindling Kracker ; however, the cost is half. I did run a Smith ax sharpener over the blade until I could scrape my thumb nail on the blade. I think it should handle any logs I get from the Amish.

Works Great. I had been looking at this for sometime and a friend bought it so he had me try it out. I could not order it fast enough. He modified it be cutting the top ring in half. I left it like it was due to I think it holds the wood from falling into you. Best purchase for the price as well when Amazon had it on special. I did pay more than my grind but well worth it. I should have bought this years ago.

I'm sure this would be great for typical firewood or softer woods. Not terribly effective for mesquite, or likely other very hard woods. I might try grinding the top of the blade a little thinner, with more gradual slope. I'm not criticizing the product at all, just information for people like me who didn't know how much harder it is to split mesquite than pine or fir. Definitely a great, stable, heavy, large tool for the price. I might try one of those cone shape splitting bits for a large drill on extremely hard woods. I'm not spending $400 for a hydrolic splitter to prepare wood for BBQ.

If you are wanting one without the ring guard you are not going to get it. Even though this is pictured without the ring guard, I ordered this TWICE, that is I got a replacement because it had the ring guard and so did the second one and the only reason I ordered this was because I DID NOT WANT the ring guard.

Wow, been splitting my firewood by hand with a splitting axe all my life, a friend suggested this to me, what a difference, there's a lot less mess to clean up with chips flying fifteen feet in all directions and it's much safer no axe glancing off small ungainly pieces that you have to hold on to with you fingers and hand so close to the axe head. Decided on this model because it's made of steel, if it breaks it can be easily welded. Cast iron can be difficult to weld.

What was sent exceeded my expectations, heavy and definitely a good value. Mine had the hoop around the top that the illustration does not show. I like the hooped version but with or without it does not detract from its function. A+++
