  • Review by my six-year-old who LOVES this set
Style: SC-3Di Pattern Name: Kit
The media could not be loaded. My six-year-old son, Jason, loves this set so much that he wanted to write the review. I told him he needed to read his review for a video, too, which he thought was cool (but scary). Here's what he wrote--you can see him reading it in the video since he got pretty nervous about trying to memorize it, which is still way better than I could have done at his age. All the words were written by him in about 20 minutes and he only spelled one word incorrectly. Here goes: Hi, I'm Jason and I'm six. Here are three reasons that I like Snap Circuits 3D. 1. You can build upwards. 2. There is also a light tunnel that actually looks like a tunnel, a sensing mirror, a horn, and a projector. 3. It contains 50 parts and you can build over 150 exiting [this was the mispelling] projects like the three walled house and the angled roof house. [Steve's note: we have the 750 piece SnapCircuits set that Jason's older siblings got started with, so this new set works well with that one, too. Jason is very glad to have one of his "own" to play with without asking permission!] ... show more

  • When it comes from his heart. ❣
Style: SC-500 Pattern Name: Kit
My goal this summer was to find something for each grandchild that would be fun, that they could play with on their own when it was too hot to play outside and to stay out of Mom's hair. I thought my real challenge would be my 13 year old grandson. He is very smart (currently taking pre-college courses) but he gets bored easily. His Mom didn't give me many ideas or suggestions, she did turn me lose. This set was above the budget I had set for each grandchild, but I decided they haven't had much, especially with schools being closed, so I raised the budget for each child. This Snap Circuits Pro SC-500 Electronics Exploration Kit was definitely not only worth every dollar but every penny! His Mom video taped him opening his package from Amazon. He just sat with this 'O' expression on his face for about 5 minutes. You could tell he was speechless! When he was finally able to talk, he was even happier when he figured out that this set would work with the 100 piece set he already had. For those of you that haven't been around teenagers, some days, you are lucky if you get a grunt, let alone a smile out of them. This family doesn't have or get a lot of extras because they decided it's more important to have Mom at home to raise the children. This Grandma tries to make magic happen when she can. His reaction was so genuine and honest, and to me, that is worth more than any dollar amount. ... show more

  • Mixed Bag
Style: SC-750 Pattern Name: Kit
I'm torn. On the one hand, this product is brilliant -- a wonderful toy to expose kids to electronics. On the other hand: 1). In many cases the components don't function as they are meant to making it the instruction booklet very frustrating for a child to work through. Example: one of the first projects is a circuit with a lamp and resistor in series. The lamp is supposed to light up, but doesn't. The set is meant to be an introduction to electronics so it's a bummer to have to get out a multimeter and start troubleshooting the components immediately (I verified the problem is with the lamp). 2). When you open the box you'll see a request from the manufacturer to contact them rather than the retailer in the event of a problem. The difficulty is nobody answers the phone and nobody returns your call. The magic of this set is that it has the potential to spark interest in electronics among youngsters. Poor quality control and customer service extinguishes the spark. I'm rooting for this product and company so I hope they get their act together. My advice: if you run into a problem, return the set to Amazon and don't waste your time with the manufacturer. ... show more

  • Fantastic kit! Engineer and Father Approved!
Style: SC-750 Pattern Name: Kit
My 9-year old son and 7-year old daughter love this thing, heck, I love this thing! The after-school care that my kids go to has the less expensive model (the SC-300) and the kids were always playing with this, so when Christmas 2014 rolled around, I knew exactly what to get my kids. They’ve had 7 months to play and build and imaginate (yup, that’s a new word) with this kit and they’ve absolutely loved it. I remember as a kid having a similar electronics kit that I spent much of my youth playing with, and I think I was just as excited to get this as my kids were. It’s a little pricey, but after seeing how much all the kids at after-school care played with it—and being able to view it in person—I knew that it was worth it. The kit is very well laid out and there are plastic blow-molded trays that hold all the pieces together. This makes it very easy to tell if you’re missing any pieces. There a 5 books of designs chock full of things for the kids to build and the instructions are very easy to understand and all the electronic components are clearly marked. One of the coolest things about this kit is it comes with hardware (a cable) that connects to your PC or laptop via the microphone port that turns your computer into an oscilloscope! It’s basic stuff, but it works very well I and really takes this kit to a whole new level. It’s really educational being able to show the kids voltages and currents and waveforms on the computer screen. It pulls together nicely the ability for the kids to physically see what’s happening (motors turning, LEDs flashing), and see why it’s happening (voltages/waveforms) on the oscilloscope. Now, you know you’ve got something good when the kids start taking apart old toys (anything with a motor in it) and start adding on to this kit with pieces of wire (from the same cannibalized toy). Real MacGyver stuff going on here! The kids have even joined forces and connected their kit with friend’s kits—just make sure you have all your parts before the kids leave! I’ve read some other reviews that are little hard on this kit and that it doesn’t really teach kids about electronics—that this kit it to “cartoony” and more of a puzzle than anything. Is this kit fun? You betcha. Is there learning and teaching happening? Absolutely. Are my kids going to learn about Maxwell’s equation, Lorentz’s law, Gauss’ law? Probably not. I’m an electrical engineer and I can see the fun and educational aspects that this kit provides. If your kids outgrow this and want something more advanced, than by all means get one of the more technical kits that are available. When you were teaching your kids to read, you didn’t start with Tolstoy, did you? This is a fantabulous kit for kids and I’m very happy I purchased it. It’s well built, well thought out, and is definitely one of those toys that your children one day will blow the dust off the box and tell their children, “Look at this toy I had when I was your age!” ... show more
