Overall, I'm very pleased. Only giving 4 stars because there were glaring omissions in the instructions and there are a couple of minor things I don't like about the rack. The Good It's an extremely versatile rack and it can accommodate people who are actually strong. Being an amateur strength athlete, that last bit is important to me specifically and a big reason why I chose this particular rack. I was very skeptical about the trollies actually being able to function with 400lbs on them, but I put 210 on one for some seated rows (See video below) and it didn't flinch. Very smooth motion even with that weight on it. Very impressed. Also did some bent rows with a pair of 45s on the actual Smith bar again, very smooth and I hadn't even tightened that down properly before doing those. Also did some crossovers (the dual pulley system was a huge selling point for me) and those were great. Every moving piece uses rollers or bearings instead of just plastic sliding on metal like a lot of other budget machines (and even not so budget ones), which should ensure smooth operation for many years to come. Love that. The Bad It's a little short. Not a big issue for me as I am 5"8" and I would never use a Smith machine for a standing overhead press anyway. The instructions suck. They could suck much worse than they do, but they still suck. It's not clear from either the manual or the video which way the front posts should face (hint: the cutout at the top needs to face forward). The instructions make it appear as if the Smith bar is pre-assembled. It isn't. There aren't instructions regarding that. There should be at least some mention of it along with some lubricant included so you can actually get the thing together. Nothing a little 3 in 1 oil didn't fix, but it was frustrating to just have to wing it. There's also no mention of tightening the Smith apparatus so it's more snug to the post. That was easy to figure out, but it could be an issue to other people. And I actually didn't figure it out until after I had used it a little bit and said, "There's got to be a way to make those more snug." Just a little blurb in the instructions or 10 seconds in a video would go a long way here. Per usual, the tools they included for the assembly were garbage. No shock there. Make sure you have a driver, a decent wrench, and a ratcheting screwdriver with some hex bits. I'm not a fan of the Smith bar and the pulley handles being on the same post. You lose about 6-8 inches of height on the pulleys and 6-8 inches of depth on the bar. If you want to do any kind of deadlift you'll need to stand on something to get enough range of motion. The biggest thing I dislike is the need to an attachment to lock in the Smith bar. You have one and only one place to catch the bar. On a normal Smith machine, you can catch it anywhere along the post. On this one, if you miss your lockout, it's coming back down to wherever your safeties are (and you damn well better use them with this one if you want to avoid an early visit to Jesus). I understand why they did it that way, with trying to make it a combo half rack in addition to the Smith machine, but it's a legitimate safety issue, in my opinion. Overall, I like it. It will suit my needs just fine and it will withstand the weights I use on a regular basis, which is far from a given in this price range. ... show more
