  • Works Well Once Paired, but Setup Was Tricky
The Extra-Partss Smart Car Key Fob for my 2016 Subaru Outback works great now that it’s paired, but getting to that point took some effort. The instructions included (both on the in packaging and on the app) were not very clear, and it took multiple tries to get the fob properly synced with my vehicle. A little more detail or clarity would’ve saved a lot of time and frustration. That said, once I finally got it paired, the key fob has been working flawlessly. All the functions respond as expected, and it feels just like the original in terms of quality and responsiveness. I’ve only been using it for about a week, but so far, so good. If anything changes, I’ll update this review, but for now, it’s a solid 4 stars. Just be prepared for a bit of a learning curve during setup. ... show more

  • Download the AutoKeyMax app from your app store! DO NOT USE the QR codes.
Replacement kit for 2015 Outback with push-button ignition (using iOS). It finally worked, but the instructions are incoherent to just plain wrong. The good news is that the hassles I encountered should have been completely unnecessary, so hopefully my experience can help others. (1) DO NOT USE THE QR CODES ON THE PACKAGING or INSERTS. The code that is supposed to download the app takes you instead to an unusable website demo. The QR codes for demos take you to the wrong vehicles and products. Instead you should... (2) Download the AUTOKEYMAX app directly from the App Store. This should be step one for everyone (including Amazon's help-line). (3) IGNORE THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SECURITY-SEALED INSERT with the serial number and password. ("Log in App by using this username and password...", etc.: there is no user-name!) Follow the AutoKeyMax app instructions and enter the s/n and password at the prompts. I don't know if they are case sensitive but I used all caps just in case. (Type carefully as there is no "show password" icon or tick-box!) (4) Attach the programmer to the OBD2 port (it's set at an angle way back behind the hood release on my Outback): turn the car and leave it running. Contrary to Extra-Partss videos and instructions, there is no need to turn on and off during programming. Launch the Key Program. VIN lookup and pairing should proceed quickly. (5) Unfortunately, the app instructions are also confusing. You may be asked whether you are programming a "Smart Key" or a "Remote". Choose "Smart Key" if it's a keyless fob for the push-button ignition. (6) The app will tell you to hold the original/"working" fob next to the start button. This will produce a single, soft beep within a few seconds. The app will then prompt you to hold the new key to the start button. (7) it may take a few seconds longer to program the new fob, but when it's done you'll hear two soft beeps and see a success message in the app... and everything should be working! (There is an immobilizer sequence that may attempt a re-set. In my case it failed, but fingers crossed I don't have/don't need that anyway!) If you don't hear the two beeps within 20-30 seconds (and see a programming success message), please make sure the battery is okay. Then look for a tiny red light to the left of the lock button. If it's blinking the fob is in "offline" mode so it won't/can't talk to the starter. Press the lock and unlock (Subaru logo) buttons simultaneously and the flashing light will go out and the fob will be in its normal operation position. Repeat the Key Program. (It might be a good idea to quit and re-launch the app just to make sure it's not remembering bad settings or a failure status.) Good luck! ... show more

  • Sketchy but it worked easily
I got the programmer + the key. This was not complicated, but the instructions were terrible and I had no confidence it would work while I was doing it. It took a lot of trusting and best guessing. That said, it turned out to be straightforward and worked easily the first try. And it is way cheaper than any other option to get a new smart key. ... show more
