The sensor is supposed to be solar powered and requires 3 days to charge, but the one I got 3 days dead. I asked Rufus if I could use regular alkaline AA batteries and yes, I quickly changed the batteries and the sensor is easy to install on my existing Tuya app. It correlates well with my existing Bluetooth separate display device probe I can only receive measurements when home. I just completed a crop of kohlrabi so I believe the EC reading for fertility. Rufus AI provides the amount of each component I plan to use before planting the Roma tomatoes in my elevated grow bed with Mel’s Mix. And Rufus will provide links to products if needed. I win because I can turn on irrigation based upon accurate measurements from any where and with measurements every 5 minutes not waste water. Nothing worse than being out of town and have no idea how plants are doing. Sensor information about soil temperature is valuable for timing when to plant crops. The sensor is durable water proof and value for the money spent and I didn’t need it to be solar powered. And if I choose I can automate irrigation by using a Tuya smart water meter purchased separately to irrigate when the moisture level decreases below a set point and irrigate for a preset time. The sensor is fairly large so I moved it to a square where I buried a 4- inch pot with wave petunias and oregano to prevent their take over of the bed. The sensor would take up a lot of space needed for the window box Roma tomatoes I will plant soon. Upon moving keeping it away from the metal edges and away from the pot I saw no difference in the measurements. I chose one sensor for the irrigation system for 4 elevated beds based upon the crop needing consistent moisture and that crucial crop for my garden was tomatoes.

I was rooting for this sensor but… The batteries arrived empty - it says to put it into the sun for 3 days! Seriously? I charged the NiCd batteries with a charger until they were full. Lasted about a day. Measurements were completely off - soil moisture showed 14% when it was 60. Temperature showed 98F when it was 56F. Had connection issues on top of it. It was about 20 feet away from a WiFi GW. Bad design.

This product gave me great expectations until the temperature sensitivity went out of range in Fahrenheit and I could not bring it back down. I would switch it to read temperature in Celsius and the temperature sensitivity would be adjustable in accessible ranges but going back into Fahrenheit the temperature sensitivity was -32.4 too +32.9. I tried resetting unit as described and pulling the power source to no avail. Also the supplied rechargeable batteries would not charge even in a battery charger. Also the fertility reading would not produce a reading no matter what ground it was set in.

As i've "dug in" to gardening and yard care more in the last few years, knowing exactly when the soil is staying at 50 degrees or above is really helpful. It's also really helpful to know when the yard and garden need watered. Rather than guessing or using a regular schedule helps you know. It's solar, simple to set up and has no wifi range issues at all (I wondered how far it could go-- more than far enough!) I will probably buy more-- the only uncertainty was the little clear plastic covers on the metal probes-- they do need removed before you install it.
