I got this as a gift for my son. He loves this game! He has the first one and he likes this one even better than the first one. He likes how you can actually understand what the characters are saying. I like that with this one you don't have to guess at how many enemies you have to get in order to pass that chapter. There is more to find and do.

My son owns the original Skylanders and a whole host of figures. He bought the Skylanders Giants Portal Owners Pack in the belief that the Portal Owners Pack and the Starter Kit are exactly the same minus a portal, but that's not true. The Starter Kit comes with more figures: one Giant and two regular figures. That's three figures versus the one in the Portal Owners Pack, and the figures are everything in a Skylanders game. Because of that, we are planning to return the Portal Owners Pack and get the Starter Kit. The original Skylanders figures will work in this game and they remember how far they have leveled up; but they can level up even higher in Giants . . . up to fifteen! Figurines aside, the game levels are easier but last longer. Can we use the Giants figures in the original Skylanders game? No. We tried that. It didn't work. My son rates the Owners Portal Pack four stars because it only has one figure, but he loves the game. UPDATE 10/30/12: My son beat the game in only a few days. Skylanders Giants has only 16 levels compared to the 22 of the old Skylanders game. Because all his old figures were leveled to the maximum possible in the old game, it was easy to beat the new one. He's disappointed he could beat is so quickly, but he still thinks it's a great game.

As a game my kids really enjoy Skylanders. They can play it for hours without arguing with each other. The portal is a bit large to have sitting with all the other various Wii and Xbox 360 controllers. You get used to it after awhile. The game play isn't graphic and its very kid friendly. The biggest con for you, as a parent, is that you will be hounded for the additional guys who are sold separately. Plus all the ones that are specials at only certain store. Then the expansion comes out and you need a new game, without portal thankfully, and a whole set of new guys. Although the old ones work the kids want the newer Giants. So its fun but the spending doesn't stop with the portal owners pack.

This appears to be all you need for Skylanders Giants. Don't be fooled, this is just an accessory. The portal is not in here to play the game. I will say Amazon.com accepted my return with no questions after my son opened it and found out he could not play the game so a big thanks to them! I will keep ordering from them!

Since I was not privy to this product except to know that my grandson had to have it, I didn't know that there was no Portal included. THis is the part that allows them to connect the figure to the video game. So, while I thought my gift was the greatest, I was told I got the wrong one. I do take some of the blame. But maybe recommendations for other items you may need would be helpful.

I guess my bad for not checking, but a little peeved that the Owner Pack is $15 more than the Starter Kit. The Starter Kit includes a Portal of Power (a spare would be nice) and two additional figures. Skylanders Giants has a great kid's story mixed with fun game play and a lot of different characters to suit any gamer's tastes. The new giants are a lot of fun as they stomp around Skyland breaking things with their huge feet (or in some cases, wheels). This game became an instant favorite and my son played it through the Christmas break until completing all the levels. Then he went back with a new giant and did it again. If you enjoyed the first Skylanders you will love this game. It's everything from the first version but BIG.
