Description
SIRUI AURORA 85mm offers outstanding sharpness throughout the frame right up to the F1.4 aperture setting. As a classic focal length for portrait shots, this lens brings the aesthetic of photography to each of your framing. The hood blocks or reduces excessive lens flare, acting as a shield against scratches, and dust. The dust and splash-resistant structure allows the lens to be used in light rain conditions. An AF/MF switch, AFL button, and aperture ring with switchable click stop provide flexible controls. The lens works well with standard filters, like black mist filter to soften and diffuse the image. The lens features high resolution and accurate color even shooting at wide open. With excellent dispersion control and suppressed distortion, this lens renders images at exceptional sharpness. One ED glass and 3 high refractive index glasses are added to provide outstanding optical performance with sharpness and well-controlled distortion. One aspherical lens is included in 85mm to reduce lens size and better control distortion and CA. Well-built portrait lens with gorgeous boken and great low-light performance

I've been a fan of Sirui's anamorphic cinema lenses for a while but I honestly didn't even know they made spherical lenses. My Nikkor 24-70mm ƒ2.8 is my workhorse lens and I probably shoot 90% of my photos with it, but I've been wanting a good portrait lens ever since I moved to mirrorless and sold off my F-mount lenses Unfortunately, I don't do enough portrait work these days to justify dropping $2600 on Nikon's lovely 85mm ƒ1.2 Z-mount lens, but when I got the e-mail announcing the 85mm Auroria (with Black Friday discount to boot), I impulse bought it without even thinking. It helped that I had almost exactly the right amount of points on my credit card to get it without spending cash, I'll admit. But, even if I had paid cash out of pocket, I would have zero regrets. It's a really freaking nice lens. As with all of Sirui's lenses, the build quality is great, especially considering the price point. It also somehow manages to feel both modern and vintage at the same time. The satisfying clicking you can turn on when using manual aperture brings me back a few decades, but the option to also spin it to A and just use it like any other Z-mount autofocus lens really seals the deal. I haven't had a chance to really use it in anger yet, but I took a few test shots around my studio and a couple outdoors after sunset. The low-light performance is really solid and the bokeh is really beautiful. I also shot a test grid out of curiosity. There is a bit of pincushion distortion, but it's pretty minimal and nothing that you would notice in most real-world shots. I'm very much looking forward to running this lens through its paces, but I have little doubt it's going to quickly become my #2 lens for still photography.

Professional feel at a enthusiast price.

Great build quality, it metal barrel feels great, no flex or plastic texture. As a result the lens does weigh more than it's plastic competition but it's not uncomfortably heavy. I find the focus is fast for portraits and stills. Slight (you have to pixel peep to notice) chromatic aberration but is easily corrected in post. The aperture ring is a light light on the detent, can move it accidentally when changing lens or if you hold that far back on the lens. The images, what really matters, are amazing. I had a friend tell me once you use a F1.4 or F1.2 lens you will look at photos in a new way. And he was right. The images are sharp, the bokeh is exactly how you'd imagine f1.4 can give you.

My copy developed intermittent fault

Worked fine for a while on my Z7 then it started clicking and you can’t change aperture or focus it, electronically or manually, like it’s not making contact. Rotating it to remove it and reattaching it solves the problem until it happens again, it’s variable when it happens. I won’t use this for a wedding/event due to the intermittent nature of the fault. Slow portrait sessions may be ok if there’s time to mess with it. Didn’t start to do this until a couple of months after purchase. I’m keeping it because I like the images it makes, will see about sending it in.

Amazing Lens for the Price

This lens performs amazingly on my Nikon Z5. We have to remember this is a budget lens but it performs way better than a lens at this price ranges has any right to do so. Be bokeh is amazing and is silky smooth.

Broken after just a few uses.

Edit: Broke on me suddenly. If I had to wager one of the autofocus gears broke. You can audibly hear gears grinding and a part loose inside the lens. If it will focus at all (manual or auto) it’s got horrible fringing on the edges. It will only focus if the lens is tilted upward. Clearly very broken. It’s been treated very gently and has only been on a few outings. It seemed like a very nice lens for the money while it was working but now it’s got me spooked. Luckily I hadn’t had it for long so it is within the Amazon return window.

Usually sharp enough

I love that it’s light weight. Amazing lens for the price but it’s definitely not tac sharp. For most portrait work, it’s “sharp enough” but if you print large or do full body shots then this can leave you wanting more detail

Every image was mushy and smeared

Bokeh? Yes. Sharp by any stretch of the imagination? No. Just did a photo shoot and every single one of the 120 images are blurry exactly where the camera locked focus, the eye. And they weren’t out of focus as if I hadn’t locked in. These images were smeared with colors bleeding. These were shot on a Nikon Z5 II at f1.4, at no lower than 200 shutter speed with constant lights and a TTL flash. It’s going back. I’m disappointed.

Perfect for events and portrait lens.

I just received this lens Z mount for my Nikon Z8 this evening and quickly tried it out. I just couldn't be happier to see its results. This is my best portrait lens I've ever had. It eliminated both foreground and background and turned them into nice creamy blur and bokeh. Its build quality on top of perfect image and discount price for F1.4 aperture are exceptional. I really couldn't complain, but just so happy that I actually purchased and tried it out. It really turned out to be my best choice.
