I love this machine!!! It’s not all computerized, which I like because it feels like there’s less to ever go wrong. Still has all the different types of stitches I’ll ever need. Runs very smooth. Not nearly as loud as my old machine. Much less expensive than other machines I’ve found. Still carries a a trusted name in sewing machines. haven’t had for too long yet, but so far i adore this machine. ‘tis the closest thing to the aesthetics of the nineteenth hundreds with the convenience of modern technology. i’d been intimidated by sewing machines my entire life and stubbornly sewed everything by hand so long as it meant not having to learn to use one. until the day the pain of staying the same was finally greater than the pain of changing (see: learning how to use a sewing machine) and i enlisted my mother (a lifelong singer faithful) to help me learn my way around one. i picked this one (yes, largely based on aesthetics) and could only be happier if the exterior were metal rather than plastic. i’ve only worked on very straightforward projects so far but it’s had no issues and goes through several layers of canvas (with the right needle of course) like an everloving dream. and everyone who’s seen it has commented on how aesthetic it is. the beginning of what i hope will be a lifelong beautiful partnership, i hope. ... show more

I wanted to wait and buy a more expensive machine, but I needed it and got this one. That being said, I love this thing. The only annoyance is, the case that it came with has cardboard and styrofoam (it's like shipping materials) inside to keep the machine from rattling around inside. I had some leftover Pelican material to cut out and put inside so it works and I like the case, but the cushioning inside the case should be much better. ... show more

If I could I would give this machine zero stars. It has not worked properly from the beginning. The first few weeks it worked enough not to return it. But now that I can’t return it, it works good for a while then not. One thing it has done from the beginning is that it always has had a clicking noise from the beginning. I have tried to fix it to no avail. But it will work for a little then all of a sudden it will start knocking from the bottom and you end up with it locked up completely or it sews two stitches and then skip five. Then repeat with the loud noise but you always end up with blobs from underneath. I will change my bobbin and change my needle and it will work for a while, still clicking but still working, for a few days and then does it again. I do the same routine of changing the bobbin and the needle and it may work or not. I do it a few times then getting it to work maybe. Well now it doesn’t work without the thread getting bunched up and skipping tons of stitches. I have a friend that has a singer Heavy Duty machine and she said she has had a problem with that also. Of course it is too late to return it. But I do not want a singer machine if they all do this. If I were you I would get the warranty because you may in all likelihood will need it. After fighting for 2 years with a Singer Protégé that I absolutely could not get along with, I bit the bullet and bought this Classic HD500. I'm giving it four stars because of all the plastic parts. Not because they're plastic, but because of the level of cheap plastic that they are. The Protégé also had a plastic storage compartment and all that, BUT the plastic was two or three times thicker, and never bothered me. For a $400 sewing machine, I expected better with this HD500. All of that aside, I am loving the machine. Any issue I've had with it so far has been user error (running the bobbin thread backwards), and it has been an absolute joy to sew with for the last 3 weeks. Would I buy it again? I think I would look around to see if I could find a machine I liked as well that didn't have cheap plastic parts. I just think Singer could have thrown an extra couple of dollars at each machine and done better. I'm definitely satisfied with the mechanics and the ease of use: I had the thing up and running in 20 minutes. I hope that helps someone make a decision. ... show more
