I've been looking for a sturdy sewing machine at an affordable price - and this is it! I have an industrial Juki as my main machine (which I LOVE) - but needed a secondary machine that could do a zig zag stitch. I had a cheaper plastic machine - but it felt like I was babying it all the time. The parts were flimsy and it didn't like any heavyweight materials. Also, the electronic interface drove me crazy -- it would take a long time to switch stitches, stitch length, needle position, etc. I wanted a machine that was solid with metal parts, simple functionality, easy to change stitch/lenght/width (even mid stitch), no electronic interface, and could power through anything that I threw its way. So far, so good! This machine is reminiscent of how they used to create sewing machines. The only downside so far is the length of the power cord/pedal. It has one cord that splits for both the power and the foot pedal. Although this design is not my favorite, that's not the issue. The length of the cord is quite short. The power side is easy to use an extension cord with, but the foot pedal has no way to be extended. I'm currently using this machine at my stand up table and I have to have it on the very edge in order for the foot pedal to reach the ground. (My table may be on the taller side, fyi). I can probably look into buying a different cord if needed. Also, I was hoping for a few more feet to be included - however, I believe the feet from my cheaper Brother machine might work. I've sewn on a lot of machines (new ones and "vintage"), and this one holds up. I put it to the test right away with a zipper pouch that was 3-4 layers of canvas thick in some areas. 👍🏼 ... show more

I have been sewing for about 50 years. I have used many machines. My latest love was a Pfaff1222E. It needs repair (it's 40 years old) I had two other, more basic machines, and both of them died during my latest project, which was a ball gown. After panicking, and research, I bought this Singer Heavy Duty (Black special edition) 4432. I wanted a machine with a lot of utility stitches, not so many " ducks and bunnies", at a great price. I was able to complete this dress, which meant sewing on double faced satin, crenoline, very sheer fabrics, and some techniques I hadn't used before, such as applying spiral boning, with this machine straight out of the box. All layers sewed very well with no machine drag. I was able to determine the different stitches very easily, and adjustments went smoothly. I had only 2 problems. I couldn't wind a bobbin, while leaving the machine threaded because it seemed to somehow cause problems, and the needle threader was a bit awkward, maybe that just takes practice. I find it inconvenient to refer to my phone, and would greatly appreciate a "hard copy" instruction booklet instead. I have sewn on a wide variety of fabrics and leather (4oz) in the past, and the heavy duty aspect of this machine seems to be strong enough to stand the course, yet it seems crenoline and chiffon very well. There are quite a few utility stitches, that should meet the needs of special finishing of delicate fabrics and those that tend to ravel easily. The feet were easy to change out. Adjusting the stitch length and width, the tension, and the pressure of the presser foot were also important in my choice, these seemed to work well for my project. I would highly recommend this machine for those serious about sewing. It is easy to learn to use, and durable for heavy fabrics or lots of layers., and gentle on sheer fabrics. The price is exceptional. If all goes well, I will buy this model again for my granddaughter. ... show more

We just opened this sewing machine box, what a disappointment. It is poorly made, the instructions are a joke. My husband ordered this machine. He has had some health issues and just opened the box today. He thought if he bought a Singer it would be a good machine for some repairs he wanted to do on his boat canvas. Singer or Amazon should stand behind this product, it's nothing we can use!!!! ... show more

    • Good Sewing Machine with a Few Minor Issues

I had a Singer CG-590 Heavy Duty machine from the mid 1990's so I know what they can do. Sadly, I had to retire mine previous one as the tension unit couldn't be fixed. The new machine sews smoothly but there are a few things that are not as user-friendly. The Off/On switch is so low that when it's lowered into my table for quilting, it's hard to reach. The former bobbin compartment was easy to flip open but now it's not accessible in the drop-down position. It doesn't come with a darning plate to cover the feed dogs. The switch to lower the feed dogs are not accessible on the back of the machine below the level of my table. I would have to pull the machine out to use it. Had to order a darning plate to cover the feed dogs and search online for a manual as Singer (and other companies) don't provide one. Oh well, it is a solid strong machine and I like the black color. ... show more

Where do I start?! I wanted to love this machine, as i have an old singer from the 70s that i love, it was passed down to me from my grandmother, and could straight stitch through anything! Ive also had 2 Brother machines, both consumer models, both able to run bartacks through 3/4 webbing like a hot knife through butter. This Singer HD however, is the worst machine i have ever owned. It looks good and boasts a number of great stitch options, but thats where the positives end. The build quality is abysmal. When i received it, it was not ready to sew. Almost everything on the machine was loose or falling off. After going through the machine, ensuring everything was tight, attached, and ready to rock, i started sewing a few test stitches, only to have the bobbin feed dislocate itself inside the machine. After fixing this, i began again, and within 3 minutes, had bent the needle at low speed, through a cotton pillow case, on a standard zig-zag stitch. Figuring perhaps it was a fluke, i began again with a new needle. Within 10 seconds, the second needle impacted the presser foot plate and broke. Inspecting the machine, i tried to determine why it was having alignment issues right out of the box. Everything seems perfectly aligned at low speed when rotating by hand. Starting again, with a new needle, at slow speed, on a straight stitch, 5 stitches in, it broke another needle. So it becomes obvious that the machines alignment from the factory is off, or there is a major fault with the presser foot feed. Starting once more, on low speed, with a zig zag stitch, the machine breaks the needle, binds the bobbin, and dislocates the bobbin feed. I have sewn over 4000m of fabric with my old Brother, and not once had a feed issue or broken a needle. I am beyond fed up with the singer "heavy duty" and would label it a paperweight. To further expound on issues with the singer, it has the worst speed control i have experienced on a sewing machine. Sometimes it is smooth linear power/speed increase throughout the pedal travel, and sometimes, you get to 3/4 pedal travel before the machine even starts to sew. Other times, a mere 1/16 of pedal travel will ramp up stitch speed to 1000. I wish i had purchased anything else. The Singer "heavy duty" is anything but heavy duty. If i could return it i would. It is an absolute garbage machine, and should be considered light duty at best. Look elsewhere for a good heavy duty sewing machine and save yourself hours of turse words thrown at this machine. ... show more

First of all I am a man, so I don't give up and write a negative review when I can't figure out how to use the needle threading feature. That reminds me of my ex-wife. Back in 1988, she was going to make all kinds of nice clothes for our daughter, like her cousin's wife did for their three daughters. She told me to buy her a sewing machine and she would learn to sew. I doubted it, because she was lazy, so I bought the basic machine (Singer Model 4530). It did the basic sewing for normal users much like these Singer Heavy Duty machines, but not made to sew heavy thicknesses of fabric or something like leathers. As expected, she let the machine sit for months never signing up for sewing lessons. One day I came home from work and she was furious. She sad the sewing machine was no good. I ask her what happened. She told me her neighbor wanted to sew some sheets together to make long table cloths, for the tables for her daughter's wedding reception. She said the two of them tried all afternoon to thread the bobbin and it wouldn't work. I asked her if they read the directions in the instruction book. She said, "NO!". I told her she needed to read the directions. She got furious with me. You see she was one of those women who would never admit she was ever wrong, and if you pointed out she was wrong she would get even with you forever. She refused to ever learn to sew, from that point on. I knew how to sew. I self taught myself how to sew, because I needed my pants pegged, which was the style back when I was a teenager, and my Mom worked 16 hours a day to provide for me. She could sew, but to peg my pants would take up her Sunday (her one day off a week), and wanted that day to be with my Mom. This has turned out great for me. I grew up to be an outdoorsman in Idaho. I am an Collegiate All American in the field of Archery. I was Candidate for the U. S. Olympics, so knowing how to sew didn't make any lessor a man any more than learning to cook so dinner was ready when my Mother got home from a 16-hour day. Now back to the Singer sewing machines. I took that standard duty Singer 4520 sewing machine my ex-wife cursed and put it to work. Of course, I hemmed my pants to the right length, and shortened the sleeves on my shirts, but I did more than it was designed to do. I have made several vests out of heavy duck and canvas. I have made bags for heavy duck, canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have made holsters and knife sheaths out of canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have sewn thicknesses up around 1/4". After 28 years, my good old sewing machine is skipping some stitches, and showing some signs of wear. It sews well on regular fabrics it was designed for, but I build survival equipment for outdoorsmen. Skipping stitches and having to re-sew thing just won't do. I bought the heavy duty model, and have tested it finding it to be an excellent machine, plus it sews thick fabrics and leathers. I have ran the test. ... show more
