  • Excellent cutter. Buy a printer cable for setup.
Set name: Machine
tl;dr Excellent cutter if you already know how to use one. Buy a printer cable! I have been a Silhouette user since the cutters were RoboCraft. In the Sil brand, I have owned the SD (I skipped the Quickuts model), the Cameo, Cameo 3 (skipped 2), and the Cameo 4. I chose this line over Cricut in the beginning because I did NOT want to be constrained to the designs and fonts on cartridges that must be purchased—I wanted the freedom to create my own cut files and use any font on my computer (I have thousands. I can't help myself.). Cricut has made some changes since the beginning, and I'm not knocking their products, but I have been happy with Silhouette. My Cameo 4 is wonderful, and it certainly does not need replacing, but I made a mistake. I normally close my Etsy and Amazon shops when I spend time in Washington, but this time, it totally slipped my mind... vinyl decal orders were pouring in, and I was 1,900 miles away from home (and my Cameo 4) for a month or so. So, I ordered this Cameo 5a, thinking I could either keep it there in the Washington house or ship it to Kansas when I returned. (Update: I now have two Cameo 5a cutters; a white one in Kansas, and a black one in Washington. And I don't regret it a bit.) SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWBIES: I'm sad to report that your new cutting machine comes with no physical manual. Not even a small startup instructions sheet. Do not despair! The software can be downloaded before you buy your Cameo (or even if you never buy one, and the free edition is perfectly fine for many users), and the manual is the top option under the Help Menu at the top of the page when you open the software. Clicking User's Manual there opens a pdf in your web browser, from where you can save it to your computer or even print it out if you're old school and prefer a hard copy. I highly recommend downloading the Silhouette Studio software and playing around with it before you have your Cameo 5a (or any SilhouetteAmerica cutter). And don't be discouraged at first: you can go as simple or as complex as your little heart desires. Make use of YouTube (Brenda from Silhouette Success has great tutorials, and there are many others who do, too). But when you actually get your machine, you'll need to set it up, and it's straightforward. As I said, I am an experienced Silhouette user. I crossed my fingers that my machine would arrive with up-to-date firmware, but when a Windows laptop nor a Chromebook nor an Apple laptop could connect with the Cameo 5a via the Studio software nor the Silhouette Web version, I knew it hadn't. And this is probably the main problem for new users, too. The firmware must be updated before the machine can be used, but the out-of-date firmware prevents the machine from connecting to your computer via Bluetooth, so the firmware cannot be updated. The very simple solution is to use a printer cable... but that is not provided. I suppose I could have pirated the cable from the actual printer temporarily, but I went to dang Walmart and bought one that will now live with the Cameo 5 forever. Once connected, the firmware update is straightforward and quick, and you'll be off to the races. As always, I made test cuts on my materials before I committed to cutting my actual designs, which is probably the top tip you'll receive from most experienced users, because every machine, and even every blade, cuts a bit differently, so consider the pre-set materials list a good starting point and adjust from there. I noticed no difference in cut quality from my Cameo 4 (which is an excellent cutter). I like that the machine operates a bit more quietly, and the auto-close lid (or maybe I should say soft-close lid) is a nice feature. The mat that came with it is very, very sticky, so I'm glad I wasn't cutting cardstock (and I can't wait to buy the electrostatic mat and bypass the cutting mat altogether). I did not buy any of the specialty tools available for the 5 and 5a because I only had that immediate need to cut vinyl decals, but later on when I have time (and money. Some of them are expensive!), I definitely will, and I'll cut a much wider variety of materials then and update my review to include all that. ... show more

  • I Love It
Set name: Machine
This just came out a month or 2 ago at the time of my purchase. I really love this machine! It has been extremely reliable and the option for extra calibration lines has been very helpful. It's similar to past machines but nicer. Because it is new, you need to use the newest version of their Studio software which, at this moment, has connectivity issues and older versions of the software don't support this machine. It does not come with a printer cable which is understandable, but it would be nice until they fix the connection issues. Other than that I have no complaints. I use mine to cut vinyl stickers and the autoblade is really easy to set up for that. ... show more

  • Bluetooth was “Unavailable” in Studio — replacement dongle fixed it, but troubleshooting took time
Set name: Machine
I bought the Silhouette CAMEO 5α primarily because I needed Bluetooth for my workflow. Out of the box, my Mac could detect the machine, but Silhouette Studio (v5.0.414) consistently showed the machine as “Unavailable” over Bluetooth. USB worked fine, and I was able to cut successfully, but Bluetooth was a must-have for me. What I tried (before it was resolved): Confirmed Studio version and updated firmware (USB check) Restarted Mac/Studio multiple times Forgot/re-paired the machine and followed the instruction not to pair in macOS, only connect through Studio Clean install of Silhouette Studio Tried an earlier Studio v5 release Reseated the Bluetooth module on the machine Result: None of the above fixed Bluetooth. After support escalated the case, they offered to send a replacement Bluetooth dongle/module. Once it arrived and I installed it, Bluetooth started working normally. I tested reconnecting multiple times (power cycling Bluetooth, restarting Studio) and it has been stable. My takeaway: The cutter itself performs well (my test cuts were clean), but if you depend on Bluetooth, be aware you may run into “Unavailable” and need support to replace the Bluetooth dongle. If you’re within a return window, plan your timing carefully, because resolving this may take several emails and shipping time. If you only plan to use USB, you may never notice this issue. If Bluetooth is essential, I recommend testing it immediately so you still have options within your return window. ... show more

  • Love Silhouette
Set name: Machine
Previously had the cameo four, it died after several years and I decided to go with the 5A. Absolutely love it, have had no problems. And the best thing it is a much quieter machine. Highly recommend.
