Description

From the Manufacturer This large aperture 70-200mm macro zoom lens offers an improved optical performance over earlier versions while retaining the same close-up ability (39.4 inches) and magnification range (1:3.5) as before. The lens--which is suitable for a range of applications, including portraits, landscape photos, and close-ups--offers two special-low-dispersion (SLD) and three extraordinary-low-dispersion (ELD) glass elements. The elements combine to provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations, ensuring high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The lens also incorporates a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which supports a quiet, high-speed autofocus system as well as full-time manual focusing. Other features include a super multilayer coating that reduces flare and ghosting, inner focusing and inner zooming systems that preserve the overall length of the lens while shooting to ensure convenient handling, and a removable tripod collar. All Sigma lenses carry a four-year warranty. • PERFORMANCE OUTWEIGHS COST
I have been using this Sigma lens for about 6 months, and it is definitely worth the money. Sigma has some questionable equipment but the 70-200 delivers great performance at a reasonable price. The lens is slightly soft at f2.8 but f4 and up is really sharp. I also have shot some studio shots at f8 and it's amazingly sharp. Bokeh is superb and don't forget the additional range if you are using a crop sensor from about 100-300mm. The lens is slightly heavy but this is expected with high quality glass. My reason for buying this lens is the excellent performance for the price. The Canon L version is a beauty, but I think most people are mesmerized with the Canon L look and forget to look for what is more important; that is the quality of the glass. My friend has a Canon L version and I cannot tell the difference between the two when comparing shots. The Tamron version is really not an option in this comparison because it just doesn't perform. The feel and look is professional and solid; the inner focusing mechanism is outstanding, hypersonic focus is amazing. This is a great alternative to the outrageously expensive Canon 70-200 L. ... show more

  • Love it!
I love this lens. I've had it for about 9 months now and I use it all the time. I use it more than my kit zoom lens for everyday shots around the house of my kids and dogs. I researched this focal range for many months before settling on the Sigma 2.8 non-IS version. Yes, I wish I could afford the Canon version with IS, but this thing is an awesome entry into this focal range. The zoom/focus rings are smooth. The focus is fairly quick. The bokeh is wonderful; and for that one reason alone I'm glad I bought this one over the Canon f4 non-IS (they were in the same ballpark cost-wise when I purchased this). The only "negative" thing that I'll say is that this sucker is heavy. I'm a male who weighs 220 lbs with a fairly athletic upper body and I am well aware that this thing is hanging off my camera body after an hour or so. But, that's just the nature of the beast, not a design flaw. Sigma has made a fine product. Sure, one day I'll upgrade to the Canon with IS, but not for a few years. In the meantime, you can guarantee that I'll be getting my money's worth out of this puppy. ... show more

  • Definitely Isn't A Canon 70-200mm...
It's a GOOD LENS for the PRICE.... HOWEVER, Autofocusing isn't perfect. If you're a photographer who shoots alot of sports events, and you have to rely on using Autofocusing most of the time... this isn't the lens for you. It tends to focus in front of the subject and not "ON" the subject. If you can find a used Canon 70-200mm... get it. Also you're GOING TO NEED A MONOPOD because it's a heavy lens, and hard to hold still. If you don't have a problem with using MANUAL FOCUS to readjust the shot... then definitely get this lens. It's a good clean photo, the main issue for me is Autofocusing. Even though it's a 2.8 and handles low lighting well... still get a proper external flash. You'll need it. As a FILMMAKER... this lens is AMAZING on a DSLR. Has a very organic film look when using it that I love. Great in low light. ... show more

  • Dont underestimate value of 2.8
I am an amateur hobbyist on a budget. I settled on this lens because of the price and the aperture. It was between this and the Canon f4 non is. I decided the Sigma was my best option because of the extra stop advantage over the Canon. This is an optically great lens, contrast and colors are amazing. The lens is acceptable at 2.8, I shoot raw and apply sharpening in DPP or light room. By f4 this lens is as sharp as it gets. Focus speed on the 40d is fast, accurate and quiet. A couple of points I'd like to bring up: the ability to shoot at f2.8 is way more advantageous than IS. IS does nothing to stop subject motion, faster aperture does. I shot my first soccer game this past weekend with a Gitzo monopod, I was able to shoot 200 mm at 2.8 with no problem. I would invest in a tripod or monopod if you plan on shooting sports with this lens. Again you get a 2.8 lens to shoot at 2.8 and I have no regrets with the sigma , just remember to apply sharpening in post processing. This lens is built like a tank, focus and zoom rings are tight and professional. ... show more

  • POOR BUILD
Unfortunately, I can't say that I was happy with this item. I purchased this item based on recommendations and was primarily using it for sports photos. Well it only lasted 4 months when I found that the lens had fallen apart while attached to the camera in my padded bag. I contacted Sigma regarding this small issue and sent it to their authorized repair center for repairs. All I can say is that warrant would not cover it do to physical damage. Of course, I explained to them that the lens was attached to my camera in a padded bag which I had finished using at a game. Cost to repair was the cost of the purchase which would not have been worth the effort to repair. I also spoke to the Sigma USA about this and got nowhere with them an the warranty. So, I would not recommend this item do to the build quality. Plastic is just not strong enough based on the weight of the lens. ... show more
