  • This is a superb lens.
Style: Nikon Set: US Version
This review is based on my first use for milky way photography, but I typically come back and do long term edits on my reviews. This lens has everything - a nice wide angle, f/1.4, great sharpness, autofocus... After my first use I am absolutely satisfied. My only complaint is the minor coma in the corners with stars, but you'll have a hard time finding ANY lens that doesn't display some form of coma in the corners, so im not knocking a star off for that. The vignetting is pretty significant, but again, wide angle at f/1.4, that's part of the deal, not knocking a star for that either, especially how easy that is to fix. Sharpness seems excellent, not unlike other Sigma ART lenses, of which I have two to compare. Autofocus is fast for f/1.4, but that was only tested indoors as I don't use AF for astrophotography, but from my quick back and forth tests with my kids, the AF seemed fast and accurate. The bokeh is superb. Again, not something you'll typically worry about with astrophotography, but in my indoors tests, the bokeh was very smooth and uniform. I didn't own the previous version of this lens, but apparently this was a major complaint of the earlier version. This was really nice. Overall, the lens performed very very well for my use case. I was doing about 15 second exposures with acceptably sharp stars on a Nikon D810 (20 seconds in a pinch). Be warned, it is bulky and heavy, and the front element protrudes so you can't apply threaded filters to this lens, which for me makes it astro specific, but I have other lenses I can use with filters for general landscape work. This lens is kind of an astro shooter's dream lens. ... show more

  • Revolution for Astro-Photography
Style: Canon Set: US Version
Dream for night/astro photography! While nothing is perfect, with what is available out there, this is undoubtedly the best lens for it. There is NO noticeable comma at even wide open, f-1.4. Only if you zoom in at 100%, you can see slight streaking at edges, but when you present your photos, there is no way for viewer to see it. The combination of wide-angle with wide-open aperture is absolutely unique and cuts down the amount of work astro-photographers have to do. Normally you would do panos for Milky Way and then separate panos for foreground, and then task of aligning stacking everything due to noise, and then aligning and then merging with fg. That takes hours to shoot and even longer to process. With this lens, you don't have to worry about noise in sky as ISO can be reasonably low, and it picks up enough area that for most scenes need for pano is eliminated. Since you can pick up light fast, for most scenes, even 30 seconds is enough for separate foreground exposure. However, it is still better to do a long exposure for foreground as higher ISO shot would not have same quality as long exposure at low ISO. Except with this lens, you don't have to do 20 minute exposures. The f-1.4 cuts it down significantly. WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT? Well, the corners are SOFT. Meaning if you put something with texture in your corners, then it would look fuzzy and out of focus. One simple way to deal with it is to crop it out. However, then it distorts your comp. Best way is to not put stuff with texture in corners (sand, water and sky are good candidates for subject in corners, tress and rocks are not), and if you do need it for your comp, then take separate exposure for the corners where the subject is sharp and then later on blend that back in your image. Money well spent! I only have Canon lenses in my arsenal, but proud to day this is a great addition. Bravo Sigma! ... show more

  • Great Fast Lens
Style: Canon Set: US Version
Bought this lens just after the Holidays and have had a chance to use it at a wedding, around the house, and have done some astrophotography tests. The copy I received did require some microfocus adjustments (-13 according to Reikan FoCal). Since then focus has been dead on. f/1.4 is great to work with, although as expected the depth of field is razor thin. Pictures of my daughter had a single hair coming down in front of her face. The autofocus caught singular hair and the rest of her face (about 0.5 inches behind the hair) was clearly out of focus. Wedding photography was great. I have the relatively fast f/2.8 Tamron 24-70 zoom and I was frustrated that 2.8 was too slow (with no flash). The 20mm Sigma worked well for group and table portraits, and even for individuals, giving you a lot of blurred background. Astrophotography. I've only done a few tests, but you likely are going to want to stop this lens down to 2.0/2.2 to get rid of vignetting and to minimize coma. Coma will still be there, but only if you are pixel peeping. I find on a few test prints, I couldn't pick it up. I haven't been hiking with this lens yet. I will update once I have a chance to get some landscapes at F/8.0. *UPDATE* Did quite a bit of shooting with this lens in Costa Rica, unfortunately the moon was up and strong most of the nights. I've attached a night shot I was able to get at F2.0 of the resort and ocean ... show more

  • Quality is great but a bit heavy.
Style: Canon Set: US Version
Quality is great and works perfectly in low light. But its heavy and big for a wide lens.

  • Love This Lens!
Style: Canon Set: US Version
Love this lens! Very well built (weather sealed would be a plus though) and tough. This has become my primary vlogging lens. The 1.4 aperture is great for low light situations and also makes for great bokeh. The auto focus is spot on with my EOS R. And very rarely misses, even at 1.4. The front glass is bulbous and prevents a person from putting on an ND filter on the front. However, I put on a rear filter adapter and it works just fine. I don’t have one, but Canon makes the rest mount ND filter for the EOS R. This uses a variable filter. ... show more

  • Way too much coma
Style: Canon Set: US Version
I've been using this lens on my canon r5 with an ef adapter for about 9 months, primarily for astro photography. So far I've been very disappointed with the amount of coma at the edges of the frame. I've used it at f1.4 and also stopped down to f2.8, with no improvement. The lens is well built and the auto focus is very good, but for edge to edge sharpness for milky way photos it's a no go. ... show more
