We had our main panel replaced and the electrician recommended a whole house surge protector. The city inspector also recommended one and said next year they were updating the city code to require them. The electrician wanted $400 to install one. This was much cheaper and easy to install if you have expertise and are comfortable going into the main panel. If you do not know how to work in the main panel this is not a DIY project for you. But if you do and you have a compatible Siemens panel, it is a single wire install into the neutral bus and then you snap the breaker into two slots. We had the electrician leave the top two breaker spots open so we could install this as it is best to install it as close to the mains as possible. While there are larger surge options, we felt this is sufficient for most surges and it is certainly better than what we had before which was nothing. I installed this easily. But there are two indicators that the instructions say should light up. The top indicator is fine but the lower indicators do not. I can't find any information about this. I exchanged it once and the replacement had the same situation. I assume it is working because the top indicator shows. I'd like Siemens to clear up this anomaly. ... show more

Very simple to install. Time to start to complete installation was 15 minutes. Additional bonus is that you can stack these for very high levels of protection. This product used in conjunction with Type 3 products like power strips, AC Line conditioners and surge protected outlets, can provide maximum reasonable assurance that your home and items are safe from all but a direct lightning strike. Something to think about- most of todays appliances like fridges, freezers, stoves, dishwashers and washer/dryers all emply mocro processor controls to operate.
