On the surface this was a simple story about a man and his girlfriends. But the relationships between man and individual women, and the relationships that develop within the group of girlfriends was a joy to follow. In general, I don’t enjoy a book series. I never start one unless of the books are available. The last one I read said that it was a 4 book series. But by the 3rd book it became obvious that there was a fifth book. Luckily the fifth was available when I got there. On top of that, the author didn’t finish the story. There were 3 different endings and the reader got to pick the one they liked. After investing the time to read all 5 books I was very disappointed. You won’t have that problem with this story. The books have to be read in order, but there is a natural break in the story with each book. And the story gets better with each book. The book covers are pretty misleading if you get them from Amazon (Kindle). It brings in the writings of well known philosophers and composers. I know that sounds weird, but it all works. What I enjoyed most about Side by Side is that the dialogue and characters felt very real. The flirtation and romance and the little idiosyncrasies that come with courting are this series' strength. Each character has their own desires, lives, and beliefs that exist side by side (bad dum psh) with the harem, and it makes the drama and romance pop. Contemporary haremlit often focuses too much or entirely on the harem, which to my mind lessens the characters. Side by Side manages to be self-indulgent in the way that only haremlit can be while showcasing the struggles that would naturally come along with it. ... show more

It’s a slice of life harem series and who would think it would also be very well written? I mean isn’t it a rule that trashy spice novels should be just poorly written? The author has a fantastic eclectic knowledge base and is obviously very well read and a student of the arts. The sex scenes were of course great but I found myself reading for also the next literary pearl or subtle comment or reference. Great stuff! Recommended series! ... show more

This series has been nothing but an enjoyable little read for me. Low-stakes slice-of-life, modern problems, but in the end, JT Knight does a great job weaving a narrative that never gets stale. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody.
