  • $400 mic came with no shipping box. Great mic, terrible packaging.
Color: Black
This mic arrived in the Shure factory box, with no shipping container to protect the factory box, and the box was all beat up, and had a big Amazon shipping label over the Shure logo on the box. I like to keep the boxes of expensive musical gear, but this box was almost destroyed. Not to mention it was open. I am surprised the mic survived the trip. They could have at least taped it closed. I notice there are several review of this and the similar KSM9 where the packaging was no good. Amazon puts toilet paper in a shipping container, but not high end microphones. I decided to keep it based on my experience with the cheaper but comparable SM57. The SM57 is super durable, so I expect this mic is not damaged by the poor shipping. As far as the mic is concerned it is great, and worth the high price. It is marketed as a stage hand held vocal mic, but I use it in my studio on a mic stand for vocals. It has a great sound to it, I will call it creamy sounding. and it is not sensitive to the singer being slightly off axis or changing distance. This is important if you need to briefly look down at your guitar, or glance at the sheet music. I sing into it with headphones, and it has changed the way I perform, and definitely improved my recordings of my voice. This mic is a high end dynamic microphone. I have several high end condenser mics, but I don't use them very often. They are too sensitive. They will pickup the sound of the air conditioner, birds chirping outside, the squeak in you chair, and the sound leaking from your headphones. They also will pickup the room's reverberation, so if you have an untreated room, those high end condensers will sound bad. This KSM8 has good room rejection, and that is important to me, even though my room is pretty well acoustically treated. Shure also makes the very popular SM7B, which is another dynamic mic that costs the same as the KSM8. The SM7B is marketed for broadcast work. You seem to see it in half of all podcasts these days. And I am seeing it used for lead singers more and more. I had an SM7B and it is a great mic. I am sure on some voices it will be a better mic than the KSM8, but on my voice I prefer the KSM8. I noticed the KSM8 is more forgiving to singer's movement. Also, the SM7B is large and heavy, so you need to have a quality mic stand or it will tend to fall over. And the SM7B has a low output that requires a high gain pre amp, or a "cloudlifter". I don't recommend the cloudlifter approach of putting a cheap booster on the mic if you are trying to record professional level vocals. If you want to use a SM7B you should find a high end high gain microphone preamp that will do it justice. The KSM8 has similar output to the tried and true SM57. Of course you still want a high end pre-amp, but it does not have to have particularly high gain. So for singers, I think this mic is just lightly better than the SM7B. So 5 stars for the mic, and 1 star for the packaging. ... show more

  • For me, not worth the money.
Color: Black
First off, I REALLY wanted to love this mic. Read every review and watched every YouTube video I could find. Basically I wanted a noise rejecting dynamic vocal mic for a solo acoustic act that I could also use to record some vocal harmonies in my home studio. Yes I know that's asking a lot from a single mid-priced microphone but hey I'm on a budget. So after all the research and reviews, I decided to order the KSM8. This mic is built like a tank and definitely a great looking departure/alternative from a 58 or 57. Sonically however, I was hard pressed to hear any difference from my old SM57. Yes, it handled plosives much better than an SM57 but the mid range harshness was almost identical to the 57. As for the "decrease in proximity effect", Shure has accomplished that with this mic but it turns out if you're a singer that likes to use a proximity effect to add some "dynamics" to your vocals--forget it. IMHO the KSM8 sounds "kinda" like a hybrid combo of a SM57/58. So if you're happy with the sound you're getting from either of those mics, you can get it from the KSM8 but you're going to spend some time working on eqing either the lows and mids to get it to where you like it. Considering the KSM8 is more than double the $ of its predecessors, I really didn't find it worth it. The KSM8 was going to replace a Heil PR22 that I've been using happily for a few years because I thought it was time to find something "maybe a little better". If you're a musician, you know how that goes lol. Oh well, lesson learned, as the Heil PR22 is remaining on my mic stand, stage and studio. ... show more

  • Great mic!
Color: Black
I've tried many dynamic mics that could fit my voice. Some had flat frequencies that sounded good but would have some bad feedback issues if my headphones were close or mics that sounded bassy and ones that I got tired to those I had to eat up the mics. My voice tends to be abit nasally and sibilance but this mic tames them quite well not to mention sounds very modern. Doesn't sound too muddy either which you can still understand someone when singing and talking but there is one slight issue like if you need to dial down for much louder sounds, can't quite hear it in my headphones ( which are beyerdynamic 770 ) but that could just be me maybe. Got this at a discount for 339 which was better than retail price 😀 Like all mics, you still have to EQ them but even after EQing this mic, there was only a small difference so there wasn't much missing out. I recommend this mic looking to mostly tame sibilance issues and don't have good mic technique and don't like too much bass in their voice. 😀 ... show more

  • Shure quality!!!
Color: Black
I have owned shure microphones like the sm58, beta58a, but this mic is prolific in sound. I didn't like how I sounded but everyone else said that I sound great, crystal clear. But that was just plug in without making adjustments. I am happy with the quality of this mic definitely natural as if I was speaking realistic. ... show more

  • Excellent vocal microphone.
Color: Black
I am vary impressed with the built quality of this microphone. The clarrity is unrivaled for its price. Even when you push the gain there is no feedback or distortion just clear sound. I am using this microphone for both live and studio recording and it is my personal favourite.

  • Even more than I expected
Color: Brushed Nickel
I was looking for a mic that would be comparable to my Shure SM7B but I could use live on stage. I swear I was going to return this FAST if it was anything more than 20% below the SM7B in sound quality. After all, this is an expensive mic in my universe... Well this mic is comparable to the SM7B in every way. Rich, big sound and on top of everything, it’s the coolest LOOKING mic I’ve ever owned (I got the nickel plated version.) it’s worth every penny and no one listening to you on stage will ever disagree! ... show more
