  • As nice as I had hoped, maybe nicer
Love my new Shop Fox 1837 table saw. The setup took me about two and a half hours all in (including fine tuning). I was in no hurry, actually enjoying the process. It took very little fine tuning, but going through all the last little tweaks make this saw a really fine machine. The only cons about the saw I have are small... 1) the table wing extensions are stamped steel. They are fine enough for general use, but getting them level according to the instructions was worthless. It says it put masking tape on the cast iron table edge to level up the wings... Ignore this and just level it up using the bolts that attach it to the front and rear fence rails. The right extension on my table is not flat, there is a little bow to it, but it honestly does not effect the daily use of the saw. 2) the rear rail... It works great for most things and integrates with the fence perfectly, etc. But it is not very solid. It's a touch flexible. So, at the extreme right side of the saw, it can dip some. A fix to both of these would be a beefier steel steel rear rail and cast iron extensions... But, this would probably drive the price of the saw up. In daily operation neither of these issues has any real effect. I only worry about bumping, or dropping something on that rear rail. One thing I discovered as a happy accident, my Bosch bench top router table's cast aluminum top is exactly 27" wide. This is exactly the depth of the table saw's table top. I drilled a couple extra holes in the edge of the router table and ran a couple extra bolts through the rear channel on the front rail to attach the router table to the table saw. I had to add a brace to the corner of the router table top to the table saw's cross rail. Anyway, back to the saw... It has enough power to cut through the things I've messed with so far (mostly pine, MDF and a little bit of thinner hardwood. I've still got it wired for 110 (no 220 circuits in the new shop yet). The Shop Fox fence is a nice and solid fence. Setup was a breeze. It is accurate and I like the way it locks. The foam covered handle is nice (not sure how long it will last, but I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed). I do like the extruded aluminum face, that adds the ability to attach jigs and additional fences, etc. The scale is easy to read, the viewing window is large, and the thin red cursor is easy to line up with the scale. The casters are a huge plus in my small shop! The saw itself locks down nicely when they are flipped up. The wheels roll smoothly, although it can be slightly tippy (because there are only 3, not 4) while rolling. I like the fact that the saw comes with several inserts and almost all of the tools required to assemble and adjust the saw (only other tool I needed was a screwdriver). The blade that came with the saw actually surprised me with the quality of cuts. A big safety plus for me is the ease of installing and removing the riving knife/blade guard. The blade guard works quite easily, and once you get the hang of tilting it (and remembering to raise the blade) it installs easily as well. This is the first blade guard I actually don't mind using. The riving knife installation is super easy as well. I sure don't miss having it find tools and get into some weird yoga position to install or remove things like this from tools in the past! Bottom line is, I knew I was taking a bit of a step up from the Ridgid jobsite saw I had up until recently. That Ridgid earned me a lot of money over the years I've owned it. But, this new Shop Fox is like a Caddy compared to my old beat up pickup truck. I truly love my new saw and am looking forward to years of using it and tot he projects I'll create! ... show more

  • Great saw with one minor design flow.
Overall its a really great saw. You need to make sure you have a 20 amp outlet to work it on. Will not even start with a 15 amp outlet. Assembly was easy and straight forward. I did need to make an adjustment to get the blade to be 90 degrees but I expect some adjustments when you buy a new saw. Everything else was in perfect condition. Fence was a perfect 90 degrees, caste iron top was perfectly flat, dust collection is great. The reason I did not give it 5 stars, is because the plate on the side that covers the motor does not fit very well, so its difficult to screw in, and when the blade is raised to its full height, 3 1/4", the cover won't fit. The highest you can go with the blade and have the cover plate screwed on is just below 3". Not a huge deal but if you want the best dust collection, you need the motor plate screwed in, but then you can't cut more than 3". I'll probably never need to cut more than 3" so its not a huge deal. Its a little bit of design flaw. Other than that, its got great power. The fence is the best part. Its a phenominal fence system. Its accurate, sturdy, and I love the t slots on the sides and top. Makes it easy to add fence jigs and extensions. ... show more

  • Great customer service
My saw arrived with a rust bubble on the one wing. I called Shop Fox to discuss, they had me take pictures so they could understand my concerns, and then they worked with me to send me a new part without hassle. This review is really a 5 star review for them, because it was the easy process I have gone through to get something corrected. The saw overall, I love. I upgraded from a used-when-I-bought-it Delta contractor saw. This saw has much more power, and is way more accurate than what I was used to having. I make and sell cutting boards and other items, so I am using the saw pretty regularly. I wanted to see how my first back of boards on it turned out before I gave a review. The cuts were clean and straight, and made the whole process go much faster. The blade that came with it is an okay blade and can do some decent rough cuts. I didn't expect a high quality blade to come with it, so the blade was not a problem for me.. This early one, I would definitely buy again. ... show more

  • Update to Can't rate the saw
Update to the " no Hardware" review. This saw is sold by Northern Tools. On the day I discovered the missing hardware. I contacted Northern Tools by email through their "contact us" option. Later that evening I was contacted by Northern Tools stating they were sorry for the missing hardware and had contacted the manufacturer requesting they send the missing hardware directly to me as soon as possible. The following day I received a call from the manufacturer apologizing for the problem and asked for clarification on what I was missing. I told him all hardware is missing. He said he would get the hardware together send it directly to me. On the same day I received an email from Northern Tools confirming that the hard ware will be sent to me. I couldn't ask for better customer service from both Northern Tools and the manufacturer As for a review. Obviously I haven't used the saw but I'm going to give it a 5 star. This is based on the following: I've done woodworking for 45 years. The saw is well built, not flimsy. With the hardware in hand it will be a very simple assembly and will suit my purpose perfectly. ... show more

  • DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS SAW!!!
Fence was not accurate, would not slide evenly from side to side, was off by more than 1/8" from 1" to12". Instructions said one hour assembly time. They need to add 6hours to that estimated assembly time. Never was able to get the base level because there are no adjustments for leveling. I have an old wore out Kobalt ( from Lowes) that cost about half of what the Shop Fox cost that works as good or better. I gave it one star only be cause there are not any negative stars to give. ... show more
