Update 3: So I ordered one of those bearing upgrade kits and a set of carbon fiber drag washers as I'd heard a lot about how the vanford doesn't come with them and of course more bearings in place of bushings is better right? Get to tearing the thing apart and SHA-FOOM its already got carbon fiber washers. Cool! Glad they're cheap. Only managed to stuff 4 of the 5 bearings in the kit in to replace bushings, this reel had 2 bearings in the handle where I was expecting 1. Update: While I do have hands on the larger side of the size spectrum, I cant stop hitting my knuckles on the bail when I'm reeling in. Technically the C for compact means this 3000 reel is a 2500 size with a 3000 spool but it really feels like it was made for a child, this issue does not exist with the $20 spinner Ive been using for over 2 decades or the "ugly" trashcan-freebie with the broken arm I picked up last year. If you too possess large meathooks, you might consider moving to a 4000 or buying the non-compact 3k. Update/p2: Despite the frustrating knuckle-strikes from the bail I will say this reel is incredibly smooth. End of year I rarely experienced what felt like a grind while reeling in and some hard clicking with the bail when I shut it to reel in. Re-lubed but havent tested since. I can say these issues could not be replicated at home. I can say two things regarding line weight and this reel. One, I overfilled it to begin with and used line far too heavy for what I needed (because noob to the newer reels and braid). Two, even when ripping 3/8" weeds the lighter weight line I wound up with held. I never used more than about 50-80 yards in freshwater anyway ... show more
