The new (black) Shimano Toriums have some internal improvements over the original (grey) Torium series, however, the new series is somewhat smaller than their predecessors. If you're fussy about the balance of your fishing rods, consider buying the next size up. The first of the new series that I purchased was a TOR 20 which was intended to replace an older Torium 2, but the new reel was so much smaller than the original that it was completely dwarfed by the rod that I'd intended it for. In the end I went back and bought a TOR 30 for that rod. The TOR 20 is so small that I'm not sure what I'll ever do with it as I've yet to find a conventional "boat rod" dainty enough to put it on. ... show more

I use this reel for vertical jigging and for using butterfly jigs bottom fishing. I really like the one piece frame construction of this reel. I gives you much more support when reeling in the larger fish. I have matched this with a Shimano Trevela TVC66H when using the heavier jigs. I have caught everything from Cod in New England to Gag Grouper in Florida. And it never gave me a problem. I especially like the smaller profile of this reel. It enables me to be able to palm the reel when vertical jigging. One thing I have noticed compared to the old style Torium, it is much easier to install the reel clamp. I have used the reel on several offshore fishing trips and I'm totally satisfied with the performance. I have owned a torium 30 old style before and stopped using it because of the weight, the lighter weight HGA is a joy to fish with all day long. The reel is very smooth and has a great drag.

I tried once and so far I like it. Works quite and smoth. I was fishing about 300 feet deep with the heavy sinker and big fish there was no surprises.

I have the size 14 model as well as this new 30 size. These are great reels. My issue is that I had to get tough with Amazon in order to receive my product and when it arrived it didn’t come in a factory box. So now I’m left wondering if this is a faulty reel or possibly rebuilt but sold as new !!! Not happy with this experience!! ... show more

These reels are a step forward from my old reels with lower gear ratios. One used one season in New England so its too soon to comment on their durability.

The drag is terrible. I have purchased two of these and both times I have hooked up the drag has valid miserably. Hard to believe how crappy these reals are these days. The older version was great.
