  • Good as it gets for the price
To start, I am some what of a calculator aficionado, I have the Sharp EL-W516T, Casio fx-991EX, and TI-36X Pro in my quest to find the "just right" calculator. Advantages of the Sharp over the Casio and TI: Easiest number system conversion e.g. hex->dec, dec->bin, etc Has a basic arithmetic drills No known bugs in the programming (at least as of writing this review) Custom shortcut buttons Home button to instantly bring back "Normal Mode" Unnecessary, but fun random number functions (Dice, Coin Flip) Best "Remainder Division" output shows quotient and remainder Most functions: 640 (maybe the TI has same/more, can't find a total function count for TI-36X Pro) Advantages shared with either the Casio or TI: History retained after power cycling (TI) Looks as advertised (no photoshop to make it look better)(Casio) Faster integrals (same speed as Casio, faster than Ti) Up to 4x4 matrices Disadvantages: Cheapest construction quality. Limited to 3 simultaneous equations and 3rd degree polynomials Disadvantages shared with Casio or TI: Awful matrix and vector input schemas (maybe I'm spoiled by Ti, you get used to it though)(Casio) Calculation history is lost when "switching" modes (Casio) Generic low-resolution-4-line display (TI) Those are the advantages/disadvantages that I've observed through use. Despite the cheapness of construction, this is my go-to calculator because I like the display formatting, bug free experience (TI has a weird display bug when working with PI and fractions), and general usership (for the most part). Seems like this model should be permitted on the FE exams. Maybe Sharp did not get this model in to the reviewers for, well, review to see if it's permissible. For that I'd recommend the TI over the Casio as the TI has superior calculation history/answer management. Most reviews for this calculator appear to be shill reviews, so please click "Helpful" if you find my review helpful. ... show more

  • weak for programmers
With a 16 digit wide display, I expected the calculator would easily handle 16bit binary numbers. Or more as it has 4 line display. The largest binary number it can handle is 511 (9bit) Another complaint I have the the results typically are shown as fractions (if possible). Instead of 0.25 you will see 1/4. you have to press "change" button to finally see the 0.25 result. Calculating fractions is more effort and can be useful -- I wish I could change the default mode. ... show more

  • Meh
...display is slightly faded that my previous Sharp even after adjusting the settings. I always lose my calculations trying to figure out how to utilize the arrows because the placeholder arrow confuses me every time...requires me working much slower than expected. It comes packed with many modes that take time to figure out because you're always having to switch between sub-settings to complete a calculation fully. But compared to other brands, I still find it better than the rest. ... show more

  • I have trusted Sharp Calculators for 40 years...
First, let me say I have not used this calculator extensively, but I have used it enough to know it will do what it says it will. Yes, there seems to be a "different" philosophy in the user interface that puts some off, but this is my 3rd Sharp Engineering calculator, and I loved the other two. The user interface is not much different from the others, and gives me no trouble. The rest of this review is about Amazon. I ordered my calculator, and was surprised to see I was charged only 2/3rds the list price. Pleasant surprise, but I was not so sanguine when I saw I would be getting a "used" product. I figured it would be a college book store buyback. After thinking about it, this was really fine with me. Imagine my surprise when my calculator arrived BRAND NEW! Thanks Amazon, for keeping the faith! ... show more

  • Key Labels
I'm only giving this calculator 3 stars not because it doesn't have plenty of capability, but it's not capable if you have to strain your eyes to see what key is what. If your in a low light area, the only keys that are visible are the white label keys. The color choices for all the other keys and functions make it very difficult to see. Dark brown and dark green. C'mon Sharp...you can do better. ... show more

  • Good calculater, competive with the Classwiz/TI 36.
Not as good as the JP900 or the TI 36, but close. It can do some thing the other two can not. But at a good price. If your in engineering do not get this one, get one on the list of FE PE approved calculators. If not this might be a good option if your teachers ban graphing calculators. This will let you salve all sorts of problems that the teacher would not expect while still not being a graphing calculator. ... show more
