This Sea Punk is an excellent mini sewing machine for beginners, especially if you took your last sewing class back in 5th grade, and you don't necessarily remember everything you learned back then. When the machine came out of the box, you'll immediately noticed that the bobbin and threading was already prepared and ready for immediate use. This makes the machine even more appealing to use, as it is at least partially "ready" for use right away. You won't have to remember, or even figure out,how to thread the bobbin, at least when you first use the machine. Included in the package with the sewing machine are all the necessities needed in a starter kit for beginners. I appreciated the many colors of bobbins included and spools of thread as well. Most important, there are extra needles included in the starter kit, so if you break a needle you can replace it quickly. The portable handle is a particularly handy feature since the machine will often be used on the dining room table, but can easily be put away. This machine actually has adjustable speeds and 12 built-in stitch patterns. There is an automatic thread rewind and you can use either a hand switch or a foot pedal to operate. There is a built-in sewing light, and a very unique thread cutter. There is also a lock stitch, top and bottom threading mechanism and an automatic thread rewind. Be sure and familiarize yourself with these nice sewing features, and you'll find this machine even more handy. On the right hand side towards the bottom of the machine, there is a small drawer that pulls out where you can store a few bobbins. Of note, the seller provides 24 hour customer service and free technical support. The machine appears to be very well constructed of a hard plastic. I might recommend that you read the manual that is included with the machine. You will find out that the power supply and battery can’t be used at the same time because it can cause damage to the machine if you do so. When the positive and negative poles of the battery are connected incorrectly, the sewing machine is not going to work. Also, another interesting fact is the manufacturer recommends that you add a sheet of paper under the fabric for better sewing results. Definitely read the manual and watch the videos before you start your adventure in sewing! The numerous features of this sewing machine will make it really fun for all beginners. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. My expectations were low for this machine. I have used those awful little handheld battery-operated chain stitch machines before and always break them in less than 5 minutes of sewing. I didn’t expect a $50 machine like this to perform like a Janome or even a cheapie WM Singer; I just wanted something that would work off of batteries and not break right away. And this machine fit the bill! You can either plug this machine into the wall (US electricity) or run it off of four AA batteries. The batteries go in a little trap door in the base. I didn’t see a difference in performance between battery power and being plugged in. Now the bad features– which I’m still impressed to be talking about, because I have been using this machine for a while now and haven’t exploded it yet – This machine is super loud. Not as loud as a blender or coffee grinder, but louder than an electric can opener. The foot pedal has very poor control. It’s basically off and on with maybe one setting in between. Fortunately, this machine isn’t super fast, so it’s not too big of a deal for detailed work. The stitch selection is confusing. There are diagrams printed on the front of the machine on little bumps that look like buttons. They are not! You select the stitch using a rather stiff knob to the left of the diagrams. This is also how you select the stitch length. The upper threading assembly lacks slots on the thread take up lever and needle thread guide; you have to thread the needle through holes instead. Not the end of the world, just less user friendly than a “real” machine. This machine also has features that I like. Loading the bobbin is very easy and straightforward. There is an auto stitch switch in the bottom right corner that actually works pretty well. A lot of features like the hand wheel and thread cutter as well as the reverse switch are instinctive positions for people who are used to sewing. There is also a tiny light to the left of the foot. I wouldn’t expect this machine to survive long under heavy use conditions; for example, sewing sailcloth, upholstery, or heavy denim. It’s also a disservice to advertise it as a children’s machine. Kids should learn on something a little bit more user-friendly, and this isn’t actually any safer than a regular sewing machine. ... show more

I'll start with my biggest complaint and then follow up with the good news. . . I received an obviously already-used machine in damaged packaging (see attached photo). Shame on Amazon for shipping this out to a customer! Surprisingly, though, all the accessories did seem to be included with nothing noticeably missing. Now for the actual review. I was expecting a cheaply made and rough-operating sewing machine but discovered just the opposite. The instruction manual is comprehensive and easy to follow, but even better is the set-up video I found on YouTube created by a third-party reviewer--it should be easy to find by searching for the sewing machine's model number on YouTube. I found the machine to sew evenly and smoothly, and a cool feature is it can run with either with 4 AA batteries or the included electric cord--it is TRULY PORTABLE! This mighty little machine comes with a mini foot pedal, but it can also be operated by turning the On/Off switch to low or high speed which causes it to begin running automatically without needing the pedal. I haven't used the machine long enough to see if it will stand the test of time, but right out of the (damaged!) box it appears to be a winner! Highly recommend! ... show more
