  • A WONDERFUL machine!
While I'm very much a beginner, I'm not unfamiliar with sewing machines. I've owned a couple of sewing machines, but I've never been a very serious sewist. I started with a mechanical Brother and it was difficult. I switched over to a computerized Brother (a mid-level machine) which was significantly easier to manage with my skills. Pillowcases, dog coats, never overly serious about sewing, but not a total newb. However, after getting a little more serious about sewing (and wanting to learn quilting), I realized I wanted a sturdier machine. I decided I understood tension, stitch length, etc., and more of the nuisances of sewing well enough. So, I decided I'd go with a manual machine again. I've since been working on several projects; quilts, pillowcases, potholders, a few clothing repairs, etc. I LOVE this machine! Yes, I miss the "needle down" button, but not enough to ever consider going back to a computerized machine. This thing is a beast and handles everything I've thrown at it. The best part? It feeds so well and straight! I barely have to hold my fabric at all. I will only use my Brother for embroidery henceforth because this Janome is wonderful. There is a learning curve to manual adjustments, but nothing the manual or YT cannot solve for you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your machine. If you're having an issue, it can be resolved! The only thing I'd change with this Janome is a longer cord (my set-up makes it a stretch). AND a more readily available extension table for quilting. ... show more

  • Broke immediately, no service
Brand new machine. After about a half hour of sewing medium-heavy canvas, during which time it worked fine, made a nice zigzag stitch, the machine went CLUNK. And stopped. Hand wheel rotates one way and stops, rotates back and stops. Tried all controls, no dice. Machine is broken internally. Called my local Janome dealer from the website, Bob's Sewing and Vacuum in ABQ, NM, and the rather hostile employee informed me that if I didn't buy it from them, they will charge me for service despite their being the only dealer in town, and the new machine still being under its one-year warranty. It's nearly impossible to get in touch with Janome through their website, which includes a contact form that does nothing when you hit "Submit," does not let you know that your message has been sent, let alone received. Found a number for Janome elsewhere online. Their number is not even on their website, which really ought to tell you something... They're not there for the customer! Finally, I got a call back from A Janome rep, who explained that their dealers have no obligation to perform warranty service unless the machine was purchased directly from them. So, she said, I could feel free to send the machine back to Janome, and pay shipping both ways to receive warranty service. I think this is absurd, and totally unacceptable. I'll never buy another Janome product, as in my opinion the machine is junk, the service is junk, and the dealer network is a joke. Good luck; guess I'll invest in a Juki and have a real machine with an actual guarantee that I'll never have to use because it's a quality machine, not a piece of consumer garbage built to break immediately. Good luck. The dealer in Santa Fe said they would do warranty work, which is apparently a favor. Okay, I'll go get this POS fixed and sell it asap. Totally disgusted. ... show more

  • Nice Sewing Machine
I really like this sewing machine. Been a while since I've sewn with a mechanical so it takes some getting used to. For me, It had just a bit of a learning curve, but that was just because it was new and I'd never sewn with this machine before. We do have to get to know our new machine! A beginner may have a bit more of a challenge at first. But its really not too hard to learn...I've been wanting a Janome for many years. I got it in April this year 2021, used it for the first time, without doing any adjustments to it. My first project was hemming a pair of my new jeans, (this machine is noted for sewing thru heavy material with ease). Well, the machine skipped stitches and the seam was just not good at all. So I took the seam out and decided to try again. I did some adjustments, changed my stitch length, changed the needle to a heavier duty one, and a couple other adjustments and then I was ready to roll. And Wah-lah! It sewed a really nice hem seam in my jeans! I was pretty happy about that. I haven't done any other projects with it since then but I am sure it will do just as well on anything I sew. This seems to be a real good sewing machine...And I am happy to have it! ... show more

  • Did the Canvas Work I bought It for
We had a few canvas projects on our boat and we wanted to do them ourselves and save money. We were very close to getting a Sailrite, but I thought we should give a "heavy duty" sewing machine a try first, and the black version was only $270 when I bought it. I have used it for drapes, cushions and repairing canvas enclosures, and it has done really well. That was with V92 thread and #18 needle. A walking foot would definitely be nice, but until we hit something this won't handle, we will keep using it. I agree with others, I don't much like the black color as it is hard to see your work, but the machine itself has been great to work with. I do not do a lot of sewing, but after watching Youtubes and then trying the the same things on the Janome, everything worked. I never felt like the machine wasn't strong enough. And I was able to match the lengths and stitch styles as well as play with the tension to get quality stitches. Even though it isn't a walking foot, it still does a good job feeding the fabric. For large stuff, like our enclosures, you just need plenty of room and you carry carry the fabric along some to avoid having the machine trying to drag it through. ... show more
