  • The Ro
Style: MKE 400
I've used Rode mics in various form factors for almost 20 years. This is now my new favorite mic. The sound quality is just superior to my ears in almost every way. The directional sound envelope is a welcome change and the "mini blimp" design is just so much better in the way it works and looks. The sound jack on the front is a great idea as it keeps cables out of your way and the power button is an easily seen green LED that turns on with a quick press and off by holding it half a second. The attention to detail on this product is appreciated. The one thing I wish it did have is a secondary safety channel like the Rode mic has. It's saved me more than once with low/loud speakers at events. Note to GH6 users. There are 3 different settings for your mic in settings, you want to choose the option to POWER the mic from the camera and the auto on/off will work. ... show more

  • Versatile mic - works great for birding
Style: MKE 400 + Mobile Kit
I originally bought this for video but have ended up using it for birding via bird call recognition apps since the kit with the tripod is so easy to use. I have tried quite a few exterior mics with my phone and this works by far the best to capture distant bird sounds, which is to be expected since it's the most expensive I've tried. My kids love using it as well and are excited whenever a bird pops up on the app (Merlin) that they hear in real-life. My wife, on the other hand, tries not to associate with me when I'm kitted up with this tripod/mic and my birding camera/lens and harness. Overall, I would definitely recommend to anyone who may be looking for a legitimate mic to use for birding apps that can also be used for video creation, or vice versa. ... show more

  • Decent microphone but expensive...!
Style: MKE 440 Stereo Shotgun
First I want to say that I love Sennheiser and I've always gotten quality products from them.... this particular microphone, in my opinion, is way too expensive for how it's designed and how it actually operates compared to what it says in the description..! I don't care for the input cable being fixed to the microphone and doesn't give you the option of TRS or TRRS, which the less expensive mics in the MKE line offer both types of cable connections and do not fix the output from the microphone with only one option of TRS...! And for the price of this microphone you should get the two different options for connecting to a camera or connecting to your smartphone...! And I thought that the rejection of unwanted sound from the sides and back of microphone is not as well as it's described in the description!? The mic itself sounds good but it has too much bleeding from the sides and back and I do not like that the cable coming from the microphone is fixed and can't be replaced or swapped out for a TRRS connection if needed...??! The other MKE line of mics offer the ability to swap between TRS & TRRS and the cable is obviously not fixed to the mic itself.... this leaves too much of a window for kinking the cable or pulling on the cable and once that is damaged.... you can't even use the mic anymore unless you have it replaced or repaired, which might cost as much as the mic did...??! Poor design on the output cable from the microphone itself and for the price, you should get the dead cat that they designed for it, instead of having to spend another $50 for it...??! I don't understand why the more expensive model doesn't come with the dead cat and the different output cable options...?? Makes zero sense to me! ... show more

  • Very impressed
Style: MKE 400
We bought this to use on a gopro for better sound quality. We have a media mod but the sound quality isn't that great. This works well and isn't too big. The sound quality is really good and we don't need to use a lapel mic. It's not very heavy and attaches to the media mod without issue. My only problem is when using the dead cat the mic sometimes becomes visible when do big fast movements. The video stabilization allows the tip of the mic to be picked up on video. I bought a small attachment the separates the mic further from the gopro and that helps. Overall I'm happy with it. ... show more

  • Discrete with Good Sound
Style: MKE 400
Kids are now singing in programs so needed something better than the huge generic mic that came with a lense package. This thing costs a bit more than the rest but it's not so "obvious" than the other mics when mounted. Even with the dead-cat, which worked well outdoors in a light breeze, it was not so eye-catching as others that I've seen. I'm glad I purchased this version instead of the smaller one because this unit will turn itself on as soon as you turn on the camera. With my other cheapo one, I kept the mic off to save on battery life and just forgot to turn it on when I switched the camera on to record. Luckily I caught it during the welcome and intro speeches. Battery life seems to be pretty good. I haven't ran it until it died because that would be a bad thing while recording something. But I probably recorded about 1.5 hrs worth of video without any issues before just changing out the battery for the next program. When researching different brands, I actually preferred the replaceable battery mics, since I have rechargeable batteries and if I needed something quick, AAAs are easy to find. ... show more

  • Beware: Common Right Channel Issues
Style: MKE 440 Stereo Shotgun
Just search "right channel" in these reviews for the MKE 440. Almost exactly 15-16 months after purchase, I developed issues with the right channel. Either it is deaf or has terrible static. Great mic with unmatched sound quality when it worked, but horrible build quality it seems. Unfortunately, I found this out after 8 hours of shooting main events at a convention. Not my favorite way to figure out my gear malfunctioned under the pressures of one-and-done filming. The non-replicable cord is my guess as to what's going on with the mic. If my warranty claim goes smoothly, I'll change to 4 stars, if only for the headache of RMA claims. It really is a good mic, but reliability is much more important. ... show more
