  • Best Bluetooth for Calls -- and it's a helmet
Style: R1 Standard Color: Onyx Black Size: Large
I am a bike commuter, and I have long struggled to find a way to stay safe while still staying connected. I've tried many combinations of helmets and single-ear bluetooth devices, wired headsets, etc. But none have worked all that well. But the Sena R1 is my dream come true. It's a comfortable helmet that lets me listen to podcasts and Google Maps directions without covering my ears. And, most importantly for me, it lets me make and receive phone calls hands-free. The sound quality isn't optimal for music -- the speakers are above the ears (leaving you better able to hear road sounds ) and heavy on the mids and highs, kind of like an old-school telephone. But this sound is perfect for voice calls and dialog-heavy podcasts -- words are easy to understand. Best of all, people tell me that when I make calls from this helmet (a phrase I never thought I would be writing), I am clearer than they've ever heard -- better even than handset calls. So, if your goal is to stay connected on the road, this helmet is amazing. ... show more

  • Terrible customer service, defective product.
Style: R1 Evo Standard Color: Matte Black Size: Large
Sena doesn’t support this product! My helmet’s battery does not hold a charge, and after 2 months of talking to their support people, they won’t replace the defective helmet. I have a total of 3 of these, 2 of them seem to be okay, but this one does not hold a charge more than 2 hours, and is clearly defective. When you open a ticket with Sena, it takes them weeks to respond, asking for info, then they vanish. When you call, be prepared to be on hold for an hour. Never going to buy another Sena product again due to the terrible service. ... show more

  • Good enough for guys that actually race their bikes!!!
Style: R1 Standard Color: Onyx Black Size: Large
This helmet is amazing! I read the positive reviews but I was skeptical, because there are people who ride bikes and then there are “cyclists”. Sure this helmet might be okay for someone who rides to/from work every day, but what about when my average speed is 25+ mph on a group Ride or in a race setting?? Well, for those of you wondering, I’m a Cat 1 road cyclist that rides ~8k miles a year, and after 4 rides with a couple if these I’m in love. It’s simply amazing. I’ve mostly just used the intercom setting when biking with friends and it completely changes the experience. We can just talk the entire time instead of brief exchanges side by side until a car passes or the road conditions change. We continually remarked at how good the range appears to be and how well it handles wind and road noise. How well you might ask? Well, with “cat ears“ on the straps we could still communicate descending city roads at 40+ mph. Of course the cat ears don’t look right so the snobby road racing scene can’t accept them, but without them we could still communicate fine as needed, but the ability to hear each other is pretty bad after about 27mph. Still totally useable in a race setting at 30+ mph but you would need to be yelling simple 1-word communication rather than chatting about last weekend. Technically radios are only allowed in USAC races in a P1/2 field, but I’m so excited about these we’re going to try it out anyway at some of the 1/2/3 races next Spring. Should be fun! Battery life is incredible. Better than advertised. I used this on a 208 mile gravel bike ride and had it steaming a book on tape from my phone for about 8 solid hours in really cold weather, Never charged it, and it still had enough juice for a 2.5 hour intercom session the next Saturday. Is it Aero? Of course I haven’t seen wind tunnel tests, but it’s probably decently aero, like many less fancy helmets, likely due to the fact that there is limited venting. Air flow? Limited Compared to a helmet like giro synthe or specialized evade. Sound quality? It’s a $126 helmet that has built in microphones and speakers! It’s amazing for the price, but not for $1,000 Helmet build quality: seems very nicely made. Compared to most other bike helmets the leather strap is a bit surprising and a little bit of a negative. You can’t just cut the leather strap like you can with the nylon straps once you figure out what length you want. Also, we have to wear our sunglasses underneath the straps rather than over like you’re “supposed to” Weight? It’s obviously heavier than the $250 racing helmets out there, but surprisingly not by much. You can tell it’s a little heavier, but I don’t think it would make a difference in anything other than the most crazy hill climbs. Something like 150grams heavier than the S-Works Evade II is I’m not mistaken (I may be!). This product is a must-have for any group that likes to ride together or anyone that wants a way to listen to music or books while riding. Highly recommended!! ... show more

  • helmets not working-at all
Style: R1 Standard Color: Onyx Black Size: Large
Hello Sena, you out there? I bought two of these helmets and after wearing them twice over 4 month period they are both dead, will not accept a charge-nothing did I say these are now just $30 bike helmets, not the $130 I spent on each helmet. How about some love here Sena, this is BS.....and after looking at the blogs, happens often. So to be clear here $260 in bike helmets-not working. ... show more

  • They don't support their product (helmets) in a proper way.
Style: R1 Standard Color: Ice Blue Size: Medium
The side strap adjustment clip broke and I was wondering if I could just purchase extra clips instead of going through a warranty process. They told me no - that I would have to ship the whole product back to them at my cost (over $15) and be without the helmet for a few weeks just to replace a 10 cent item. I would be willing to buy replacement parts since they are a cheap plastic and it broke the second time I put it on my head, but they don't support their product. Mind you it's a $120 product and you can't even but replacement parts for it. I like the helmet a lot but if you can not get parts for it it's an expensive waste of money. ... show more

  • Sena's Size Recommendations Too Small
Style: R1 Standard Color: Onyx Black Size: Large
This is an early review, since I have yet to use this helmet on the road. I ordered 2 of them, one for me and one for my wife. I ordered them according to the manufacture's recommendations. My head measured 59 cm and my wife's measured 57.5 cm. According to Sena's recommendations both measurements fell in the their range for a medium 55 to 59 cm. I was borderline and Sena recommended to go to the with the smaller size. The medium would fit tight on my head but I'm not sure that it would have not given me a headache after long term use. My wife just plan told me it hurt her head (too tight). So, I send the mediums back and ordered a pair of large. The large fits both of us fine with a little adjustment room in both direction. Intercom works fine. The music sounds tinny. I made a bracket for mounting my GoPro to the helmet and it works great. The bracket clamps on the helmet air vent slot so there is no drilling or damage to the helmet. ... show more
