UPDATE: June 2021. Helmets now almost 2 years old and still work like new. They keep a battery charge like new. We get 5-6 hours from full charge. Less if we are talking alot, talking on iPhones, or listening to radio/music. Sound quality still reasonable considering small speakers and features all work as new. Range typically about 700 feet line-of-sight with no obstacles. In level campground with trees, tents, and RVs range is about 250 ft. Wife and I use these everytime we bike and she smiles as Roadies on fast bikes pass us yelling at each other in conversation. She quietly says "yup, so glad we got these". Great purchase if you bike in a group of two or more. Bought two Sena R1 helmets. One for me and one for my spouse. Overall experience so far is very positive. We do a lot of leisure cruising along asphalt and gravel trails around Washington D.C. area. These helmets change the way we bike. It can get crowded and we get split up. We need to communicate hazards and important information. We contend with pedestrians, electric scooters, and all manner of bikes. Being able to communicate via intercom was our main purpose for purchasing. It has worked perfectly for deconflicting among all these various obstacles and kept us informed of each other's location over a 1/4 mile away. Intercom quality is very good. No wind noise though I can hear spouse's bike changing gears and rattling over bumps in the background. Volume level of intercom is adjustable. Must be some great filtering hardware/software here. Setup, connection to iPhones, and connecting intercom functions all straightforward following instructions and YouTube videos. Everything worked perfectly on first try. Remembering various button push combinations to get different functions to work takes some practice. Once paired for intercom, helmets re-connect when turned on again. Helmet has numerous adjustments to get a good fit. Inside pads don't appear very adjustable. Helmet build quality is first rate. Helmet weight is not really a factor as we can't tell difference between these and our previous Bell biking helmets. We bought these mainly for intra-bike communication and these helmets are excellent for that purpose. Having iPhone and FM radio capabilities are a bonus. Current Amazon discount pricing on these makes them a no-brainer in our view if you need a smart helmet. ... show more

    • Best helmet for communication

Let me explain why I give this helmet a 5-star and the other categories less than 3. First of all, I’m not looking to have noise canceling while I’m riding. I’d like to hear my surroundings especially when a car comes up behind me. So I think having the noise canceling category negates the purpose of this helmet as the idea is to ride without headphones. The helmet doesn’t have any base therefore the sound quality isn’t amazing if you want to listen to music. Why I gave this 5 stars? Because this helmet serves its purpose when riding with another rider. I ride with my husband and the intercom works VERY WELL for having conversations while riding without having to yell at each other when traffic is whizzing by. The clarity of the audio while talking is amazing and you don’t hear the wind of you’re ripping the downhills. If you’re looking for a helmet that will allow you to have conversations with people or to let the group know if there’s a car coming from behind without yelling- this will work PERFECTLY! ... show more

We really loved being able to communicate with each other, while they lasted. Great for safety. But, the customer service has been really bad. One helmet stopped being able to adjust. They said I could return it. It would cost $20 to ship to them so I decided I could live with it not adjusting. Then my husbands helmet started sounding garbled and crackling in and out. He’s also not able to adjust the sound. I did all the resets sena requested. Each reply from Sena took weeks. Last message said they were going to check my warranty status. That’s been about six weeks. When I started working with them, I was still within warranty. But, now I’m out. They won’t answer messages. Terrible for as much as these cost.     • Runs EXTREMELY small - and evidently for perfectly round heads?

Probably a great product BUT if you have a head that is over 23.5" around you're going to find this tight. YOu're also going to find out that if your head isn't perfectly round that it will put pressure on your forehead and the back of your head. Great idea, absolutely ridiculous sizing. I wear a 7 1/2- 7 5/8 hat size. The large helmet doesn't fit comfortably at all. It fits, just feels like a vice on front and back of head. Pissed off that I'm going to have to send this one back AND my wife's because if I don't have one hers is worthless. Christmas isn't what it should have been. ... show more

    • Excellent teaching tool for kids

I originally bought my helmet because I was tired of wearing ear buds while riding. To ensure they don’t fall out I had to put them in snugly which gave me reduced peripheral hearing even when I switch off the music. This helmet is fantastic. It is as comfortable as any bike helmet that I have worn and the sound and noise canceling is excellent. While teaching my 3 year old to ride I started with a copilot but we had trouble communicating due to the road noise. This intercom system fixes all of that. I bought him a small which fits well and can be adjusted larger for years to come. Now I open an intercom and we can talk the whole ride. He likes it so much that sometimes he wants to put on the helmets then go to the basement and talk to me on the main floor. I recently bought him a woom bike (if you are teaching a child to ride there is no better bike on the planet) and began teaching him to ride on his own. With the helmets he can hear me encouraging him once he gets going so he stays comfortable on the bike. Now when we ride I can offer him a little tethered freedom since I can communicate with him from a moderate distance. Great buy. ... show more
