Description

Scarface meets Moby Dick in Say Hello to My Little Friend—“a masterclass in pace and precision…brilliant” (Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, National Book Award Finalist of Chain Gang All Stars) about a young man’s attempt to capitalize on his mother’s murky legacy—a story steeped in Miami’s marvelous and sinister magic. Failed Pitbull impersonator Ismael Reyes—you can call him Izzy—might not be the Scarface type, but why should that keep him from trying? Growing up in Miami has shaped him into someone who dreams of being the King of the 305, with the money, power, and respect he assumes comes with it. After finding himself at the mercy of a cease-and-desist letter from Pitbull’s legal team and living in his aunt’s garage, Izzy embarks on an absurd quest to turn himself into a modern-day Tony Montana. When Izzy’s efforts lead him to the tank that houses Lolita, a captive orca at the Miami Seaquarium, she proves just how powerful she and the water surrounding her really are—permeating everything from Miami’s sinking streets to Izzy’s memories to the very heart of the novel itself. What begins as Izzy’s story turns into a super-saturated fever dream as sprawling and surreal as the Magic City, one as sharp as an iguana’s claws, and as menacing as a killer whale’s teeth. As the truth surrounding Izzy’s boyhood escape from Cuba surfaces, the novel reckons with the forces of nature, with the limits and absence of love, and with the dangers of pursuing a tragic inheritance. “Blistering, hilarious, [and] tragic” (The Miami Herald), Say Hello to My Little Friend is Jennine Capó Crucet’s most daring, heartbreaking, and fearless book yet. • Caught me unaware & I loved it!
Say Hello to My Little Friend by Jennine Crucet is a book that caught me unaware recently. Ismael Reyes, or Izzy, spent his days as a Pitbull impersonator before he was issued a cease-and-desist letter from the performer’s legal team. This has Izzy feeling down on his luck and he decides to try and become the next Tony Montana, as in from Scarface. He goes about his plan while living with his aunt, who raised him. Along the way, he becomes obsessed with his past. His aunt and friends encourage him to let it go, but he cannot. We are also introduced to Lolita, a captive whale who lives at the Miami Seaquarium. She shares thoughts with us about her captivity and the world. This doesn’t make sense, but we trust the author anyway. I listened to the audio version of this book and it was spectacular. I could see the water rising in Miami and feel the tension rising in the characters (all the characters were great, by the way). I genuinely felt like I was going along for the ride, but to where I did not know. The author’s words about the area made me remember visiting the Seaquarium and being near the ocean. There was a funny line about going on a date up to a “nice place” in Broward like Bahama Breeze, where I’ve been many times when I lived there. It’s just a feeling you get when an author can describe the places, the feel, and the vibe of the setting of the book you are reading or listening to. It’s so much better than just a random neighborhood. I KNEW it was Miami/Ft Lauderdale, I could smell, taste, see, and hear it. I appreciated the attention to detail. I also learned a lot about the movie Scarface from this book. After much back and forth, I gave this book 5 stars. It is a wild, fun, and bittersweet ride. If you don’t know anything about Moby Dick or Scarface, don’t let that stop you from reading. It is not necessary to understand the book. When I finish a book and think about it for days or weeks after, I know it’s a 5-star read, and that was the case with Say Hello to My Little Friend. ... show more

  • Hilarity and heartbreak
This is a quirky book that packs an equal amount of humor and heartbreak. Izzy is a lost soul carrying deep trauma. He decides to plot his American success story based on Scarface. Despite the underlying current of loss, this book is hilarious. The characters in Izzy's adventures are rich and relatable. The addition of Lolita the orca adds to the chaos and eventual final act. ... show more

  • Set in Miami, a Story of a Man Obsessed With a Captive Orca
3.5 Stars Set in Florida, predominantly in Miami, this story revolves around a young man, the story of his life, and the story he’s been told about his life - which are two different stories. Izzy has a dream, an ever changing dream of attaining fame and fortune, he’s reached out, repeatedly, to Pitbull, and doesn’t seem to understand, despite the cease-and-desist letters he’s been sent, that Pitbull has passed the point of being nice about it. Izzy is lost in his own dream world, and doesn’t seem to understand that Pitbull is serious, and seriously annoyed. He suffers from the idea that if they could only meet, he knows he could convince Pitbull of his talents. He wants a life with the glitz and glamour that is accompanied by power and money. Money begets power, and power begets respect. He doesn’t really have either, but is determined to do whatever he has to do to get there. For me, the best parts of this novel were when Izzy decides to go to the Miami Seaquarium, where Lolita, Miami’s Seaquarium’s captive orca spends her time swimming in circles, more or less. He becomes fascinated by Lolita, and the idea of her, or of having the kind of life where he could have her as a friend, or perhaps a ‘pet.’ Something to show just how important or rich he is. Unfortunately, for him, he is neither rich nor important. Perhaps I’ve read too many books like this, always set in Florida, where someone thinks they can just wish something into being real, but ends up a hot mess meant to amuse. Was it amusing? At times… The ending, though, was the best, and made it all worth it. . Many thanks for the ARC provided by Simon & Schuster ... show more

  • Excellent, creative, boldly imagined
All in all, this is a rare and marvelous book, full of charm, social commentary, excellent writing, believable magic, mesmerizing plotlines, wry and sometimes bitter observations—and the amazing Lolita the orca whale. Say "Hello to My Little Friend" is distinctive and bold and showcases an amazing talent in its author, Jennine Capó Crucet. Don’t miss this one. Though the book focuses also on Cuban youths Ismael Reyes, known also as Izzy, and his sidekick Rudy, the real star is a captive orca improbably named Lolita. In some ways, this is a devastating read, but also surely a fascinatingly original one. The book begins with a chapter called “Etymology,” in which Lolita is brutally captured and ripped from her family, including her mother and her aunts. The use of explosives to separate the orcas and the death of five in the family—drowned by the nets used—are heart-breaking in revealing the cruelty involved in the capture done for profit and entertainment. The author’s remarkable ability to get inside the captured Lolita’s mind, emotions, and memories to give her a voice makes this book special and gives the story much of its strength, impact, and power. I received a free copy from Netgalley, but I honestly honestly was amazed by this book and these are my true opinions. ... show more
