So this does in fact pass-through charge and works great with other devices plugged into it. The color matches the laptop nicely (I have space grey) and it does allow you to finally have more than one usb cable plugged into it while charging on the 12" Macbook. Here are the problems, however: 1: It will not sit flush along side the computer if you have any kind of case or shell on it. I have a very minimalist plastic shell and the plug will not go in far enough for it to connect unless I flip it around and have it pointing forward which means that it is not supported and it hangs about 1/4 inch off the table pointed forward. 2: When it is plugged in, it works great, but it comes unplugged very easily when trying to attach or detach usb devices, memory cards, etc. I would take care when attaching or removing cables or cards from the device because it has a tendency to unplug from the computer, which means that it will unmount all the hard drives and memory cards plugged and jump drives plugged into it. A couple times now when I have accidentally nudged a cable or the hub, it disconnects suddenly. 3: It gets really hot. It is surprisingly warm after a short period of time. I have not spent a lot of time yet transferring data with it (afraid that it will disconnect suddenly!) but it gets really hot versus the Apple connectors. 4: And this is just a design thing, but why would you put your logo on the bottom of the device? The indicator light that it is plugged in is on the "top" and they put their logo on the bottom... this of course doesn't matter in terms of the device performance, but it is a strange thing to hide your logo on the bottom of a device. So bottom line, I plan to return this. It does not make a reliable enough connection for "real world" use and since just about everyone I know that has the MacBook has some sort of a shell or case on it, this device doesn't connect if you try to attach it the way they designed it. Flipping it around makes it very unstable One solution might be for them to offer 6" usb c male to female cable so that you can connect it with it having to hang off the side of the computer. ... show more

The single most annoying thing about the new MacBook 12" is the lack of ports. Apple offers adapters- at about $35-100 each, and you have to buy multiple to get everything that this hub offers. This adapter is great because it gives your laptop all the ports that most laptops have, essentially taking away the MacBook's one disability. It provides 2 standard USB ports (a necessity), a microSD slot, a SD slot, and a USB-C port (so you can still charge your laptop while using the adapter). As a university student, standard USB ports and the ability to charge my laptop at any time are extremely important. As a girl who loves her rose gold MacBook, a matching adapter was pretty important to me! This adapter perfectly matches my laptop, which I love- it looks seamless. My only complaints are that the adapter gets a little warm- not a concerning-your hand-melt-plastic hot, but obviously heated, and that in order to use the adapter I have to take off the bottom half of my thin hard shell case. The adapter fits snuggly right against the laptop, which looks great because theres no gap, but it is kinda a hassle to remove the case and put it back on when I finish (plus, I don't want to end up scratching my beautiful laptop). EDIT again: rated this back down to 3 stars. I received the 2nd one they shipped me. The customer service is amazing. However the new product still has the same issue as the first- it cannot read my HDD unless the hub is connected to the charger as well. I guess that's how the product is designed? This rating is 3 stars because with this problem, it is not worth anywhere near $45 in my opinion and because it is not explained on the box or in the Amazon product description about reading an external HDD. thanks for the great customer service Satechi but this product needs work or your description needs to be updated. I will try finding another external hard drive to test. If it works I'll push my rating back up EDIT: I have bumped up this review from 2 stars to 5 stars because of the amazing customer service. They contacted me after my review and helped me out. Thank you Satechi ------ This adapter only reads my external hard drive when the charger is also plugged in the usb-c port. i don't know if mine is defective or this is how it's meant to be but it was not mentioned anywhere in the description. if i plug in my iphone alone it reads it fine, however i am sure if i try to plug in two devices it won't work unless its in the charger which defeats the purpose of this adapter in my opinion. i read some bad reviews on this product but i bought it anyway thinking it probably won't happen to me but i was wrong. ... show more
