  • Priorities done right: Sapphire RX 9070 Priorities done right: Sapphire RX 9070
The entire computer technology industry is completely off the rails today, especially in terms of prices and availability, so I’ll leave fluctuations of both aside for this review. Sapphire has done a fantastic job of emphasizing the aspects of their cards that I actually care about, like power delivery, cooling, and build simplicity, and *not* focusing on superfluous features like LEDs, spaceship bezels, etc. This card is no exception, being relatively lightweight for its class, yet cooling very well and looking sleek and modern without being over the top. The implementation of this particular RX 9070 is good if standard. They didn’t try to push the clocks beyond reference, but indeed RDNA 4 doesn’t really excel at that anyway, instead dynamically clocking itself very well based on cooling, power and silicon limits. It does, however, respond fairly well to undervolting, and Sapphire did give you quite a wattage range to work with, if you want. The card supports a cap from 154W on the low end up to 269W on the top end, though its default TDP cap of 220W already seems to be the sweet spot for this silicon under most circumstances. At idle the card is capable of pulling only a few watts, though this is highly situationally dependent. Linux support is excellent, so long as you’re running at least kernel 6.17 and Mesa 25.0 or later, plus the most current kernel firmware available. Ideally Mesa 25.3.x or later for best performance, efficiency and stability, particularly for RT and FSR4 optimization. Hardware encoding and decoding in Linux is great, e.g. via VA-API, allowing for full hardware-acceleration of H.264, HEVC (H.265), VP9 and AV1. Its dual media engine is impressive, often encoding hundreds of FPS of full HD content per second, and is noticeably faster than 9060-based cards at AV1 encoding if that matters to you. In short, Sapphire’s priorities typically line up with my own, and the 9070 is a great example of this philosophy. The card is good-looking without being gaudy, it’s easy to work on, the cooling is very good and the power delivery is reliable and slightly overbuilt. If you don’t care about “Big Green,” “Leather Jacket Man,” and their particular ecosystem, this card is also a better value than their cards on performance parity with this one. Finally, if your CPU supports it, definitely make sure to enable ‘Above 4G Decoding’ and ‘ReBAR/SAM’ support on your motherboard to allow larger than 256MB chunks to be uploaded to the card in one pass. This is a “free” performance uplift of anywhere from 5-20% depending on the scenario, regardless of which OS you’re running. ... show more

  • 1440p Monster! | 5800x, 32gb ram AM4 1440p Monster! | 5800x, 32gb ram AM4
Picked up the card to replace my 6750XT (which was a fantastic card by the way!) and I could not be more impressed with the 9070. This card is so fast, quiet and efficient. I’m running a system with a 5800x, 32gb of ram & 4tb of storage. This 9070 was the perfect upgrade to get another few years out of my AM4 build. I play all games at 1440p and I’ve yet to find anything this card can’t handle. It is truly a monster of a card. If you’re two generations behind like I am and don’t care about raytracing or 4k gaming, THIS is the card to get for the money. You get 90% of the XT’s power for an absolute steal of a price. Plus, who doesn’t love a clean 2-fan card? ... show more

  • Better than Nvidia
It's a beast.. fits very tight and actually was afraid of breaking it during install but there's zero sag. I have GPU support in regardless but anytime I clean the case the support seems to not be supporting any additional sag weight. I can push this pretty hard and it just eats whatever I throw at it while staying really cool. The secondary fan hardly ever turns on because it's not needed for the most part. My case temp rarely goes above 30°c now while most Nvidia rtx GPUs I've tried rarely go below 32°c. Love this GPU and no regrets switching from Nvidia ... show more

  • A good part if you get a good price.
Decent value for the money. At the time I purchased this card it was 50 over msrp so not the perfect buy but it is a great card. Power efficient, stays real cool under load, no stupid 12 pin cable, performs in the top 15 cards right now, really just a great part overall. If you’re buying new, aren’t trying to spend four figures for top of the line and need a recommendation I’d vouch for this one. ... show more

  • The obvious choice
This thing is a monster. Sapphire is a great brand. Better than EVGA ever was. I can never hear this card making a sound. It's the quietest thing in my whole PC. I can't even tell when the fans kick in. The chip is extremely efficient. It only requires two 8-pin power connectors. It can handle any task thrown at it like it's not even trying. The driver works great. I have it installed as a secondary GPU, and the chip actually electrically shuts off (BACO) when it's not needed. A very cool feature for me, but most people will be using this as their primary GPU. Why are you still reading this? This is the one to get. I love this thing. It will NEVER disappoint you. It's just completely rock solid. No weird caveats or gotchas like with NVIDIA. ... show more
