  • Small But Mighty
Size: 3-Inch Style: Standard
Let's get the obvious out of the way - these speakers are purpose-specific. They're not your average desktop music boxes, they're flat and unforgiving and transparent. And those are all good things - music and video producers don't want their studio monitoring equipment to be mindless yes-men, they want the truth of what they're producing. What impresses me is that there's more bass, more volume, and more flexibility than you think coming from these. I've used Samson's GT4 Pro monitors in the past and I was floored at the value per dollar then - these outpace even that set. They're compact without sacrificing power, they're loud without sacrificing clarity, and if you need a little more bottom end, they're some of the only monitors in this price range that have a dedicated 1/8" subwoofer output jack and MAN does that come in handy. If you're a bedroom producer or need a second set to check things on a budget, these are a great buy. If these blow up next week then I wouldn't feel stupid buying another pair to replace them. Samson is a company I trust with my sound, at a price that doesn't make me feel like I'm turning into an elitist. ... show more

  • Very sloppy, overbearing Bass, with poor balance throughout the audible spectrum when used with Bluetooth
Size: 3-Inch Style: Bluetooth Enabled
All I can conclude is that the generally favorable reviews of the BT3 are made in comparison to computer speakers that come with a desktop PC or in a laptop, and that their primary use is for gaming, or other non Hi-Fi application. To call these speakers "Studio Monitors" is outrageous. Bass dominant bookshelf speakers would be more correct. The experienced very sloppy, overbearing Bass along with the poor balance throughout the whole audible spectrum (when used with Bluetooth) could not be corrected with optimal positioning, and since there are no Bass / Treble controls for the Active Speakers themselves, playing music through Spotify or similar via a smartphone is painful. After playing 3 songs I know very well, and have listened to many times via BlueTooth with Edifier and Klipsch bookshelf "monitor" speakers, I had to stop and box-up the speakers for return. If they are not defective, they are a defective design. On the positive side, the product looks presentable and feels substantial (much of the heft surely reflects the obviously large magnets that must be in use for the low range driver). And, Samson is a Long Island company... ... show more

  • Not very good
Size: 5-Inch Style: Standard
I got both the M50 "monitors" and the subwoofer. The speakers suffered from a defective passive monitor, with muffled sounds and low volume. It would rarely work better than that. So that had to be returned for a refund. The subwoofer I don't think is defective, it's just not good. The bass is very loose and flabby, the boomy type that you don't actually want for music and can barely be acceptable for movie explosions. You can get similar performance from products have the price, which also really aren't worth getting. The only real positive is at least it doesn't have a hiss nor trouble waking from standby, as well as many connectivity options. Albeit no balanced XLR, which may or may not even matter. I would suggest looking elsewhere. For the same price you can get Edifiers which will also include all the cables. I'll likely hold onto this subwoofer for a year or two, then mothball it or throw it away. I suspect it will die within that timespan anyway. A quality pair of studio monitors will serve you better than small satellite speakers and this subwoofer, so that's an option too. There are a lot of options if you want to go that route. I'm not sure why these, subwoofer or monitor, are so high on the bestseller rank. Update 7/13/20: Dead. No longer powers on. Amusingly enough you can still pass through the sound even without any power. Didn't even last 3 months. Complete waste of money. I reached out to Samson for warranty, but this will be an expensive product to ship, I shipped a similar lighter subwoofer for $40+ not too long ago, so I assume it will be in that price range for this too. No point in throwing more good money after bad. It was only okay while it lasted, I don't think I'll be touching any subwoofers anymore, spend a little more on quality bookshelf speakers and don't worry about dealing with any of this. Update 7/14: Powered back on. Probably works now, not sure, I've unplugged it and put it in storage. I still wouldn't recommend it. 7/25: Tried again, doesn't power. Samsom hasn't gotten back to me on troubleshooting. Powered up again later in the day. There's something with this, I have no idea when it will work and when not. ... show more

  • Great speakers when they work, but they don't tend to work
Size: 3-Inch Style: Standard
I tried this item twice. First the good. It has clean sound and simple operation, exactly what I wanted for this small part of my retrogaming setup I was using it in. Now, the bad. When I first bought this, the unit I received had a dead left speak. OK, fine, I exchanged it for another one that did work. Unfortunately, after only a month or so and a handful of uses, this second unit developed super low sound out of the left speaker. So, essentially, I had the same basic issue with the left speaker from two separate orders. The first time the left speaker was dead out of the box and the second time after a short time of light usage the left speaker suddenly lacked any volume. Whatever the issue is, it's clearly a persistent problem, particularly based on some of the other reviews and comments on here. It's a shame too, because outside of the non-functioning left speaker, the overall sound is exactly what I wanted - crisp and clear and not overpowering in the bass. Unfortunately, it's now too late to exchange these. Instead, I went with Edifier studio speakers, which thus far work perfectly fine. ... show more
