Color - Antique Walnut. Excellent stain - easy to work with. The box I am staining is made of scrap wood with an uneven pattern. In some areas the wood is much darker and has a red hue. I suspect parts of it might be made of entirely different kind of wood. So I was concerned it would come out "striped & spotted". Used Minwax pre-stain to minimize the blotching effect and surely it helped a lot. But it also accentuated the unevenness in wood which was alarming. It wasn't just the color, I could see the difference in wood pattern and density as well. And all of it showed up conspicuously after the 1st coat of stain. To even it up on the second round I stained only lighter parts with a small brush, went around a few times and then let it sit overnight. The next day did the whole procedure again - stained the whole box, then touched up lighter parts. And it came out beautiful. I was lucky to pick up a lighter shade of Walnut (antique). It allowed me to put quite a few coats on without going too dark. Antique walnut color is absolutely gorgeous; it has a lot of natural gold tones in it. And I was able to build up a darker shade by applying more stain. Love the results. Cleaning the working table with a wet paper towel was a breeze, there is no odor, no fumes, and it dries rather quickly if you wipe the stained object with a dry cloth. I bought this stain in Cognac for a nightstand that I'm building to match an existing dresser with an Acacia type of wood finish. While this stain is a little more warm/red than I expected, it still looks very rich and accomplished my goal of making cheap plywood and lumber look much more high end. The first photo shows the stain on a maple plank, and the second shows the stain on plywood with a roll of birch veneer nearby for color comparison. It was very easy applying this with a foam brush, and there wasn't much excess to wipe off but a light swipe with a clean towel gave it a streak-free finish. While one coat would have been fine on its own, a second coat gave this a richer and more consistent color. I also like the fact that the stain is in a tall bottle rather than a can, which made it easier to pour into another vessel to dip my brush into. ... show more

Love it, not gel but not thin like typical stain. Went on well, could leave it on thick for a more solid gray or wipe it to bring out the wood grain. Just bought more I liked it so much. Nice weathered look with the iron earth color.

Color: Clay Wood: raw knotty pine Use: tongue and groove ceiling This is where buying online is tricky...color can look vastly different! Visited manufacturers website hoping to get best color idea (color was lighter there than here). I wanted a yellowed/brown light gray to complement my dark walnut floor. I stained outside in 55 degree F weather in the sun. Rubbed on with cloth and instantly wiped off with dry rag. Color was still "black " so I rubbed a damp cloth over it and lightened to dark gray... NOT what I was expecting. This color with no wiping is pure black. Wiping only pops some grain through. The finish is amazing, and no streaks. Blotches are from the wood itself, although I may try a brush to work it better into rough spots. Leaves a slight rubber feel to the wood. Going to experiment with linseed oil. If that doesn't help lighten I will buy whole wheat to mix together and get lightened gray brown.. Will update later. First pics are of raw wood, stained wood and wood in cabin lighting.. ****update! I did a mix of this with boiled linseed oil and it worked like a charm! Linseed oil can be found at any hardware store and is a bit cheaper than the stain. Gives a nicer, smoother finish than the stain alone too! Add a bit more oil gives a bit lighter gray. Plus it blends beautifully and if you need to darken it in you rub on a bit more. I used a washcloth to apply. Funny enough eventhough one is an oil and other is water-based, they mixed great! Just be aware linseed oil is very self combustible on a rag, so keep in a metal or tin bin after applying. ... show more
