VERY first time to use water based stain. OMG I love it. WOW....what a difference from oil based. Will never go back. I am usually applying several coats to try to get the color I want. It came quickly. I usually use Minwax but thought I’d give this a try. I’m glad I did. It works good. So far, I’ve only used it on White southern pine, oak and maple wood. It really brought out the wood’s texture and grain. Remember that this is water based. So, use it with water based stain and finish. If you only have oil based stain and stuff then just make sure this pre stain dries 100 percent before applying stain. ... show more

It served it's intended purpose. Was redoing an old brick fireplace with a new wood insert, stone veneer and custom built the mantle. Was in a bit of a time crunch so chose this water based stain along with water based conditioner and poly. I saw a lot of the negative reviews but they seem to be from not knowing what you are buying. There are pros and cons to water/oil based products ranging from look, to durability, application, dry time, coloring over time etc.... you also need a decent understanding of how different species will take different products and how to prep them appropriately. If you just buy this product expecting the look on the can or you've seen on the internet you will probably be disappointed. If you do research about the above factors and understand the downsides of water based stain, this product can work great as it did for me. ... show more
