I am not a great welder. That being said, I love this thing. I learned to weld about 35 years ago and I had since done some small welding about 20 years ago. I hadn’t welded anything since. You don’t need a lot of knowledge to use the handheld welder. However, you do need some knowledge and safety experience using one. I purchased an auto dimmable welding helmet and welding gloves. I didn’t purchase a welding vest but it might be a good idea to. I’m using kevlar sleeves. Don’t rely on the flimsy welding shield that comes with the welder. It’s cheap and too easy to slip out of your hand when welding. ... show more

I’ve never welded before. I bought this. Read the instructions (wink wink), didn’t watch any how-to vids just spoke over phone with a friend. First, I practice tacking flat washers to some scrap metal. Then I practice laying a bead between to scraps. Then I welded 4” square tubing to sheet. It ain’t pretty but it holds! I walked the tubing with a 2lb hammer the a 4’ length 2x4. It held! Nobody would call me a welder or pay me for my service, but now I can fix/repair all manner things I used to toss. First time I used it i attached ground cable, turned switch on, have a auto dimming helmet and tried to strike supplied welding rod on new metal with trigger switch and wouldn't spark. After multiple tries I figured that I had to hold the trigger switch as if it were a rocker switch in different positions every time. I contacted Saker customer service over a half dozen times and would always get a automated reply, then wait several hours to get a suggestion that i would try but wouldn't work. Needless to say their customer service is terrible. I never got satisfaction and hopefully if/when I need it I can get it to weld. SAKER gets zero stars. ... show more

I recently bought this for the garage. You know.. Those dumb jobs around the house where you need to tack or weld something but the wire welder isn't up to the job and the diesal-fueled skid unit is a bit much to move with the tractor to patch up my smoker. Using the provided sticks. The arc strikes quickly and isn't hard to keep a running puddle. I ran through those 20 or 30 sticks pretty quickly. Thought.. It calls for 3/32 or 1/8 sticks. Ok. I had some 6010 around and wasn't doing anything dramatic. 6010 is supposed to be the pick-up truck of electrodes, right? These should work... Nope. This thing will NOT consistently run an arc with 6010. It will spark then stick. It doesn't matter what amp setting you have dialed it. Pop-fizz-stick. Wiggle it off then pop-fizz-stick again. Didn't matter what degree I lined up with the surface or how fast/slow I drug the tip. Pop-fizz-stick. Not sure why but this thing HATES 6010. Hates with a passion.. I went back to the manufacturer site and ordered what they sent originally. 6013 sticks. Hopefully I'll have better luck and less frustration. Other than that.. I am digging the portability and convenience of this thing. It is quick to set up and get running. It is a bit wieldy with large gloves on. The trigger takes some getting used to when your dexterity is limited by thick gloves. The same for the process of inserting a new stick. ... show more
