  • One of a kind compact yet powerful speakers
Finding a pair of small speakers that sound great is hard. Few manufacturers are willing to put out a speaker less than 12 in in height and or depth. Polk has some Elite series that are close, but they lack low end bass. These are exactly what I wanted for my bedroom! They pair perfectly with my Onkyo a-9110 integrated amplifier and sound amazing with ample bass (down to 55Hz) and clear mids. At higher volumes, there is a bit of distortion at the high end, but these speakers are under $70. At this price point there is some compromise on the sound quality. Overall, these speakers are compact, easy to install and sound wonderful in my bedroom. ... show more

  • Decent speakers if you have good EQ controls
These speakers are pretty good for the price. To check them out, I compared them to some Bose monitors I have, which consist of 8 3.5" (I think) drivers in each cabinet, and are rated at something like 240W RMS. These Saiyin speakers are rated at 80W peak, which is somewhere around 56W RMS, though the AI engine that did that conversion said they aren't directly convertible because one is continuous (RMS) and the other is for short bursts. Nonetheless, I wanted to get those specs mentioned because I think it possibly explains some differences I detected. The 2 main points I can make are these: 1) the Saiyin's have better low-end response than the Bose but are lacking in the mid range and high end, where the Bose have a lot more presence. 2) the Saiyin's need more power to get them to sound as loud as the Bose. I don't have any way to measure the power exactly, but the fader on my Mackie mixer was at around -10db for the Bose to get an apparent equal volume to the Saiyins sitting at 0 db. That second point is where I think it's important to know that the Bose have those 8 drivers in each cabinet, vs the 5" bass driver and the dome tweeter in the Saiyins. I would have guessed that all those drivers would have required more power to get them as loud as the Saiyins, but the opposite turned out to be true. I suppose all those little speakers amount to an overall larger surface area, so my ears detect that as being louder. I'm not an acoustic engineer, so that's just my guess. At first I thought these speakers sounded pretty non-descript in the low end, but I was suspicious that the material I was hitting them with was the problem, because the Bose sounded even worse down there. So I hooked these speakers up to my bass rig and got a pretty good surprise, they sounded not too bad with me just running some bass lines through them. I certainly didn't try popping and slapping at any volume I'd normally use at a rehearsal, but for low level listening, I thought they did pretty good. My conclusion about these speakers, then, is that if you have an amp with good bass/mid/treble controls, then you can get a sound you'll be happy with. If you like a really deep bass end, like for movie special effects, you will probably want a subwoofer to bring that, but for average musical content, I think these are fine. ... show more

  • Very nice sounding speaker set
Wow! I don’t know what to say… these little bookshelf speakers sound amazing! I was not expecting such a great sound from a modestly priced set of speakers. I ordered these bookshelf speakers to pair with one of those little basic 2 channel, 12V Bluetooth amps to use in my den - just to have some music in there, too. The size of the speakers seemed like they’d fit the spaces I have available, and they looked nice in the photos, so I figured I’d give them a shot. When they arrived, I wasted no time in setting them up, choosing to first hook them up to my home stereo. My jaw dropped the moment my test playlist started! I had to sit down and just take it in. Here, sitting on top of my 90s SF concertino speakers were these considerably smaller, “plastic’ cabinet (more on this below), bargain priced bookshelf speakers looking at me with a “we can do that too!” grin. The music just projected out into the room with such clarity and detail. Their bass extension isn’t quite as deep as my main speakers, but for their size, they certainly give more than just a hint of it. I’m floored with how good these sound. I didn’t push them too hard since they were connected to an old, high power stereo, but their sound with it got me quickly setting up the little Bluetooth amp. And with that, they played every bit as good. The quality goes beyond the sound. The cabinets first appear as just simple black plastic wood-grained cabinets, but a closer look reveals the details that lend to their sound. When tapped on the sides, they don’t have a ring or an echo, and are fairly sonically dead so cabinet resonation shouldn’t be an issue. These cabinets are really nicely finished, too. The textured wood grain is actually natural looking, and paired with the deep burgundy undertones in the matte black finish, they actually look like real ‘wenge’ stained wood. I thought that detail was my eyes playing tricks, but even in a different light source that burgundy undertone is there adding to their ‘wood’ realism. The speaker drivers are squarely screwed in, not turned off to one side or the other, as is the jack receptacle on the back - very nice attention to detail. My banana-plug style speaker wires fit in securely to the jacks on the back (remember to tighten down the bare wire screw collar of the jacks so they don't rattle if using the banana plugs). Theres a centered metal hanging slot on the back for wall mounting or securing to speaker stands. And flush-mounted above it is a seemingly appropriately tuned bass port. For the sake of the review, I removed the speaker driver of one to have a look inside and was met with a much larger magnet on the back of the woofer than I expected (that’s also a good sign). And that’s when I noticed that these cabinets aren’t plastic at all - they’re MDF! No wonder they sound so good! There isn’t a crossover, but there is a filter capacitor on the tweeter, so there’s where the cost comes into play. But they’ve found a sweet spot with the drivers that pulls off a great sound without one. Also noted was a lack of polyfill or other resonance deadening treatment inside, but again, from their sound that doesn’t seem to be an issue. The grilles are standard, snap-in, acoustic fabric wrapped MDF. They’re kinda tight, so use caution when removing them. Overall these speakers are a really nice catch. They sound fantastic, look great, and pair nicely with those little Bluetooth chip amps, as well as full size equipment - very well made set of speakers. Totally recommended with five stars! ... show more
