  • 5 stars for survival, 3-4 stars for general use
I've purchased two of these and overall I like them. I haven't used them enough to speak to endurance or how long they retain a functional charge with use or on the shelf. However, based on some simple testing, I'd say they are very good for their primary intended use: starting a fire. The nature of the plasma igniter is such that wind should not be a concern- and that's very important in an outdoor environment. I haven't tried using in the rain (though I suppose I could try it in the shower!). For more general use - eg lighting candles in a glass container - they are a bit awkward. Due to the location of the button and the cap that protrudes above the igniter, it's difficult to insert these into a glass candle with the wick near the bottom. Of course, a long wooden match will solve that problem handily, one doesn't really need one of these. The inclusion of the flashlight is a nice option, although I'd think one should rely on a separate flashlight rather than run down the battery on something intended primarily for fire starting. Also - it requires turning off and then on again to alternate between bright beam, dim beam and flashing. It seems to always start on bright regardless of the last setting - I'd prefer to be able to have it start up dim to save battery charge. It also wasn't obvious to me from the very spare instructions that the same button turns on the light and the igniter depending on whether the cap is open or closed. All in all, as long as the charge holds up in use, I think it's great for its intended use. ... show more

  • Light is great, light is weak
The lighter function is awesome but the light is weak

  • Jury is still out
Haven’t used it yet in a survival situation so I’m still skeptical of its effectiveness versus a real flame but it appears to be high quality and I have it in my get-home bag.

  • Rechargeable and waterproof
This is an excellent tool for backpacking. I love that it doubles as a backup light too.

  • Pretty awesome
So far, so good. Easy to use, safe and reliable. Happy to have leave disposable lighters in the past for starting the woodstove.

  • Great stocking stuffer
What a great little lighter! I got this as a stocking stuffer for my husband and he loves it. It works with plasma and the fact that you can recharge it in a flash is a definite pro! We are still trying to figure out how the tinder lanyard works but it's overall one of his favorite Christmas gifts! Next year, I'm going to get one for my dad! ... show more
