Rust-Oleum Zinsser 304H 1-Quart Bulls Eye Clear Shellac From the Manufacturer Bulls Eye Shellac is an alcohol-based solution of lac, a natural resin. Dries transparent with a faint, golden cast that is much lighter than oil-base varnishes. Offers many advantages over other clear finishes: it's easy to use, dries quickly, is non-toxic when dry and cleans up easily with ammonia and water.

Shellac is a classic, natural, time-proven finish. I really like how it highlights the wood, curly maple in my case. It does not make it too yellow but all the detail comes up beautifully. I used a transparent water based poly finish in top of it with no issues. It dries very quickly and is not very even when it sets, another reason to cover it with a protective layer. Just don't varnish anything that's exposed to the sun. You'll be very dissapointed.

    • 1/2 price for a dented can
New quarts are normally $22 - $28/can. What I received was a quart can with a large dent (about 1/4 of the can was pushed in). The can had no other scuffs or problems so this probably was damaged in shipping. Quart was full to the top, so everything was ok, and the shellac acted like all other that I used before. Came very well packaged. Easy to use. Dries within hours. My shelving units looks good. Minimal odor after 3 days. I am not sure about the durability; however, the applied layer looks very very solid and is quite resistant to sanding.

    • Effective
I refinish furniture and this is my go-to product to help prevent bleed-through. I find the smell very offensive though, and would recommend you wear a mask. It also ruins whatever applicator you choose to use, so I've started using pieces of old T-shirts that I cut up for this purpose. I wear a rubber glove and dip a small piece of the fabric into the shellac and apply it that way. I can then discard the fabric after using and don't have to spend time trying to clean a brush or sponge applicator. ... show more

    • Fabulous for NATURAL cork or cotton bicycle handlebar tape or fishing rod handles.
First, it is clear BUT will darken material color. I used it on NATURAL cork and cotton bicycle handlebar wrap as well as on fishing rod handles. It both makes them look fabulous as well as protects them from sweat and rain. I reseal, put in a ziploc bag; and have used the same jar for many years for handlebar retouches. Just seal the lid back on with palm pressure or rubber mallet, open with a paint can opener. Oh, Shellac is made from the female Lac beetle, so its safe for hand contact. Oh, and, if you dry bamboo, wrap with first aid tape, then shellac you will have a CRAZY SUPER ULTRALIGHT weight but super strong hiking staff/set of poles. 10 or 12 G shotgun shell epoxied onto the bottom(s) and will far outperform/be lighter than carbon ones!!! ... show more

    • Fast drying and strong
I chose this shellac for sealing a desktop before Clear coating. I have used Zinsser for years as a professional painter and have never been let down. Even after all the new VOC 2.1 rules the new formulated Shellac still works awesome. Brush or spray it on, either way it dries very fast, sands super easy. Sand in between coats for the best results. 3-4 coats will be as smooth as glass. 5-star product, highly recommended. ... show more
