  • I really love this mechanical pencil
Style: 0.7mm Color: Black Body
This pencil is amazing. Only problem I have, if you plan on taking a lot of notes with this pencil, you will begin to hurt your hand, and may even lead to a callus. Otherwise, this has truly been the best mechanical pencil I have ever used. (I bought both the 0.5mm and 07.mm) The lead that comes with the pencil barely ever breaks and the pencil itself feels really sturdy and strong. I didn't start using this pencil until the end of graduate school. As a physics major, I highly recommend this pencil for those pursuing any STEM degree. The only thing I would advise against is using the eraser. It's tiny, so it's best to use a different eraser. ... show more

  • One of the Most Precise Mechanical Pencils
Style: 0.7mm Color: Black Body
The rOtring 600 is an excellent mechanical pencil. The best way that I can describe how this pencil writes would be to say, "it feels like a wooden pencil in terms of its instant travel in response to your movement." No energy is wasted with this pencil. Every minute movement you make is transferred directly onto your paper thanks to absolutely no wobble of the lead. The lead fits perfectly and I mean perfectly in the metal sleeve tip. The metal sleeve's narrowness also makes it much easier to see where you are marking when using a straightedge. I also have to mention the mechanism. It propels the lead with unwavering precision, always putting out the exact same amount with every engagement of the mechanism. If I had to choose a negative aspect of this pencil, it would be comfort. The knurling of the handle coupled with the hexagonal shaft make the pencil somewhat uncomfortable. This really hasn't been an issue for me, but my sister did not find it comfortable enough for daily use, so she bought the Caran D'ache Metal 0.7 Mechanical Pencil (CD844.070 ). It has a smooth shaft and is lighter weight than the rOtring. So if comfort is a big issue to you, you may want to look elsewhere. For me, precision, reliability, and usability are the most important factors when choosing a mechanical pencil, and this pencil fits the bill nicely! Protecting the Tip: If you already own the pencil, you probably know that the metal sleeve around the exit point of the tip is very fragile and can be broken easily. It is for this reason that I tried to figure out a good way to protect the tip. Some people use a generic bic pen cap, but I did not want to mess up the knurling's paint, so I ended up drilling a 1/4" hole through the center of a wood pencil eraser, careful not to penetrate through the top of the eraser. I did this to make room for the tip when the eraser is pushed onto the pencil. After a little trial and error, I was finally satisfied with the hole's position. Now, I can throw my pencil in my bag or carry it in my pocket without fear of the tip breaking off. Hope this helps! (See Pictures) ... show more

  • A Pencil to Write Home About
Style: 0.7mm Color: Black Body
Like most people I expect, I have several really nice pens that write well and look sharp, and frankly look great when pulled out in a meeting. But, when I am working at my desk, or in my shop, I almost always use a pencil, and to that end I have explored numerous options. At one point, I went as far as to buy some vintage Swingline pencil sharpeners and then stock up on what was the best writing pencil I had ever come across, the Dixon Tri-Conderoga Triangular #2 Pencil. Dixon Tri-Conderoga Triangular #2 Pencils, Wood-Cased, Black, Pack of 6 (22506) Notice I said "was". Even though I like how well the Dixon pencil writes, it is not always convenient to find a sharpener these days, and frankly it looks a little odd in a business meeting. So I continued my search for a great mechanical pencil. I remember when I was a kid I would always marvel at the solid metal mechanical pencils that my father used when he was working. (he was a Civil Engineer) Nice and sturdy and a solid lead tip. However when I went looking for a good mechanical pencil, all I could find was cheap plastic junk pencils, or the real flashy looking pencil that looked just like a pen. Neither one wrote very well and the lead continually broke. In my book, they were junk. When I came across this pencil I thought that it looked promising. Solid brass construction, knurled grip, and a lead grade indicator. The one thing on web description that was missing? Just how well this pencil writes. I had all three of my kids try it out, and they said the same thing, "Wow, this pencil writes great!". And they use pencils everyday at school! I still have the wood pencils around to use in a bind, i.e. I am outside in the shop and my Rotring is inside my office. But for day to day use, including business meetings, this is the writing instrument I carry with me. You will not be disappointed with this pencil. Two last thoughts. This pencil comes in the 0.5mm and 0.7mm sizes and I vacillated over which size to buy. I hate pencils with sharp tips that cut through the paper when you press hard, but other reviews said that the 0.5mm is the size for people who have handwriting on the smaller size. Which I do. However, in the end I decided to forward with the 0.7mm with some trepidation. I am glad that I did and I would highly recommend this size, even to people with small handwriting. The wider tips makes the pencil glide nicely, and it is certainly a fine enough point for most any writing. The second issue is pencil color. I love the look of the black, but I am afraid I will lose it one day since it is so dark, and matte besides. ;-) I can tell you this, if I ever lose it, I will order another Rotring the same day! ... show more

  • Has become my go-to
Style: 0.7mm Color: Black Body
Pros: The weight and build quality of this pencil are excellent. I enjoy sketching and writing with it. It is mostly metal, including the threaded components--this what convinced me to try this after having three or four graph gear pencils break at this point. Also, it looks cool. Cons: The cap over the eraser usually pulls out the eraser causing the lead to spill out. This does not look cool. I miss the retractable tip of my graph gear 1000 more than I thought I would--i cannot carry the rotring in my pants pocket without jabbing my leg. Overall, this is a great pencil, especially if you are planning on keeping it on your desk or carrying it in a pencil case. I was hoping this would be my go-to, but it looks like it will be a good addition to my lineup. Edit/update: despite the flaws stated, this has become my go-to pencil. The quality of construction and the weight are solid. I've gotten more accustomed to carrying around a pencil case and a tombow stick eraser, so my initial gripes have essentially been resolved. I like it enough that I bought a second one in red for red lead. ... show more
