  • Almost as good as a 600
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
You get the Rotring experience for half the price of a 600. However, not as good as the Staedtler silver for the price.

  • My favorite pencil.
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I know some reviewers have commented that the rOtring 600 is "better" because of the weight. I disagree, and here's why: I'm not in the NBA or the NFL or any other profession where big strong hands are a given. My hands are a normal size for an adult woman. The 600 is, in my opinion, too heavy. That, my friends, (and of course the price difference) is why I recommend this pencil over the 600, any day. Note to anyone with large hands: this is about the same diameter as a wooden pencil. If that size isn't comfortable for you, stay away from this pencil. Now back to the good stuff: The 500 strikes a beautiful balance between performance, comfort, and click. If you don't yet own this or another rOtring pencil, I think it's important to tell you that they have the most satisfying reload *Click* (sound and feel) of any mechanical pencil I've ever used. (NOTE: The click on the 600 is the same as the 500, but it is my understanding that the 800 has a softened click. If that's your reference point, fahgettaboutit just get this one.) The pencil grip is metal, so don't expect a cushion for your finger-- just a perfect writing utensil. And a few bads: When the graphite wears down to about a half inch or so, you might as well just pull it out and start a new piece because your lines will get noticeably soft and thick. This is an occurrence that seems to be unavoidable in mechanical pencils. I personally like sharp lines, so I just toss the excess at the end because it's useless to me. If you use fancy lead (and lots of it), this can get expensive over time. Perhaps that problem is less severe in the more expensive (heavier) models. ... show more

  • I'm a certified rOtringer!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
This is my favorite pencil thus far. I LOVE its very traditional design, I love that it is all black, and I absolutely love how nicely it fits in my hand when using it. The body is made of black plastic. The grip is made of black metal that prevents slipping. The weight of it is ideal since it's lightness encourages my hands to keep writing (it's debatable whether that is a good or bad thing). There is a basic clip that serves its purpose quite nicely, and it has a tiny eraser under the black cap that comes in very handy when I want to erase some minute thing that would otherwise distract me from continuing my writing. Note that I mainly use it to hand-write, not to draw, but it is reminiscent of my days in college when I took art classes and stole a similar one from a then-boyfriend. Well, it's true. It had a good fit then, and I love the fit now. Of the pencil. I clip this on an equally black Moleskine notebook where I write before going to sleep. I chose this pencil because with it I can write from any angle, even facing up, all my deepest and darkest secrets and it will not break the lead making it fall into my mouth or nose. I hope this helps. ... show more

  • Needs Improvement
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Pencil is balanced from the exact middle of the pencil. I've never favored this for the main reason is strains the wrist moreso than the elbow when writing. Lengthy periods of time will leave cramps and ur hand and make your hand feel arthritic. However, pencils with weight in the tip, pencils like the pentel graphgear 500, tend to allow long periods of time without any issues. This result is from putting strain on the elbow. The equivalent of using the different weights would be a violin bow to trying to scratch your wrist with the same hand. Buy this pencil if you're willing to fork over 2x what the Graphgear offers, in price, with future wrist problems. The lead that comes with the pencil is top notch, saving this review from a 2 star review. When using this 13 dollar pencil, you will hear rattling inside the pencil. For god knows what reason, it rattles. I've removed the lead and yet it continues. I figured its just the built qaulity of the pencil, as other very low grade mechanical pencils are. The place you grip the pencil is way too far toward the tip. From my experience with pencils similar to this one, it causes you to write smaller and strain your hand more. This also impedes drawing fluid circular shapes. However, going back to the pentel, which is nowhere compred to this price bracket, has a further back pencil grip of the same gritty material. 2 things to improve in this pencil would be to offset the grip higher and increase the weight to the tip. Keeping the plastic barrel is fine, that should't be an issue. I can imagine the paint will wear off eventually due to the black nature of the pencil and it being on metal. Be weary if you plan on making this your final and only stufy pencil. ... show more

  • 500 - too lightweight
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Meant to purchase another Rotring 600, mistakenly bought this 500 model. Now that I have a 500, I will keep it as a backup mech pencil to carry & use when I'm out & about as I'm not concerned about losing it. The 500, with its plastic barrel, is too lightweight for my taste. Although the 500 has a nice knurled metal grip and lead hardness indicator, I find it difficult to write with. If you're undecided between the 500 and 600 models, spend the extra $5 for the 600. The 600 has a perfect amount of heft, is perfectly balanced, and IMO is nearly the finest mech pencil ever produced. (Had Rotring engineered a retractable tip without the wobble of the 800 - it would be the perfect mech pencil). The 500 is nonetheless a nice pencil if you're looking for an affordable, LIGHTWEIGHT option. Thanks for reading, -CC, Amazon Prime Member-Reviewer ... show more

  • Great Design
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
My favorite pencil for writing. I would rate a 5 star, however think I will reserve that for the more expensive 600 model if just the same (but with metal over entire length). I got this for under $10, has a plastic body, but very nice metal grip that is the best in the industry. Nothing fancy about this pencil, it just works well. I only wish they had a 4 mm version, as I find 4 mm led ideal, thin enough, but not so thin it will break (at least not with quality pencils). ... show more
