  • Good, but...
These are pretty good strings with a great smooth feel and a good thump that mimics the sound of an upright bass. However, you'll most likely need a noise gate, as there is a ton of 60 cycle hum when you play. I suppose it is the nylon coating that makes them not ground so well. But a good noise gate should reduce (or eliminate) the hum to a tolerable level. They are a bit thicker than standard strings, so it's possible that some adjustments or mods might need to be made... such as filing the nut slots a bit wider or adjusting the action. But I installed these on an early 2000s P bass without any issues. If you want that "Motown Sound" this is it!! ... show more

  • THE fretless sound!
We had a visiting artist who is well known for his fretless playing (Jazz) - I asked him what ind of strings he used because I had been using round-wound strings and had never been happy with my fretless tone (it just sounded like my other basses with a bit of MWAH). He pointed me in this direction and I ordered these the next day. OH MAN! if you've been looking for that mellow, upright-y fretless sound, this is IT. they feel great, and sound like perfection! Can't imaging needing to replace them too often, as they are flat/tape wound, but won't hesitate to get another set (and may even try them on a classic fretted bass just to have that classic thump in my arsenal) ... show more

  • I can not tune the 115 to a C#.
I am not happy with these strings. I've had many rotosounds but never coated stings. I got these 2 drop tune C# Its either 2 sloppy making tons of noise or I tried tighter but string way to tight like a banjo. I'm pulling these off throw away strings. The .65 pulled out of key when trying to tune to E. There's something I not understanding. With coated stings. ... show more

  • Those RotoSound strings, tho! Best strings ever!
These are the first strings I ever bought for my first bass guitar. I was a little apprehensive because it was my first bass and the strings are not cheap and I didn't want to buy multiple sets from different manufacturers if I had made a mistake with the RotoSounds. I was afraid I'd have to try many different strings to find the sound I wanted. I read everything I could find about strings for bass guitars and settled on these. I play mostly Motown, soul and reggae and was after that 'upright' bass/James Jamerson kind of sound. These strings fit the bill perfectly! I couldn't find them on Amazon and bought them on E-Bay for about the same price as these and I was totally amazed by them! They have that dark, warm, soulful sound I sought after. These strings are smooth (reduced finger noise/almost non-existent) and would look awesome on any bass because they are black! They are easy on the fingers and slides are effortless. The tension is low and the action is great on my bass! You can't beat the huge sound you get...even with passive pickups - it feels like my bass has a pulse of its own. The strings make my bass come to life. It has presence. I play in a band and you can definitely appreciate how good these sound. I just bought my 2nd bass a week ago (also a Fender J-Bass) and I ordered a 2nd set of these strings from Amazon 2 days ago. They should arrive tomorrow. I got the long scale both times because my basses measure 34 inches from the saddle to the nut and these strings are plenty long. I did trim them down so I have about 2 - 2 1/2 windings per peg. I did not have to file the nut on my first bass and from the looks of it, I won't have to adjust the nut on my new bass either. If you want to slap/pop, play metal, etc. these strings might not be for you. But for jazz, soul, Motown, reggae - you won't find a better sound. Made in England and endorsed by many of the world's top artists. You can't go wrong with RotoSound! You'll be blown away by the amazing sound of these strings! Buy them. I hope this review is helpful to you. ... show more

  • Not Your Typical Bass Strings
Great strings if you want that upright sound. I use these for country music and they sound fantastic without much EQing on a precision bass. I wouldn't say the strings produce as big of a signal as uncovered flatwound strings, but turning up the volume a tad on your amp isn't hard to do. I was trying out all my basses to see which had the best sound. At first I though it was a particular bass, but soon found out it was whichever bass had these strings on. They really do alter the sound and bring out a more retro tone to your bass. Really thick in the low mids. The sound they produce has a "thump" to it and doesn't really jump out to the crowd in the band mix. They don't have an aggresive sound. These rotosounds rather fill up the space and add a warmth to it. Very easy on the fingers and like what others have said, no noise from sliding your fingers up and down the strings. Tension is lower than most strings which is pleasant. You have to really hold down the string as the nylon is a bit slippery on frets while plucking the string hard, but that could just be me. They sounded amazing on my fretless but moved them to my other bass as they began to buzz near the first fret. I was bummed because how close it sounded to an upright on the fretless with a more wood like tone. Either way, they sound great on my fretted. Just make sure to set the action a little higher for fretless. Also the gauges are really thick so prepare to file open the nut for them. Great strings, never changing them out! ... show more
