Description

The Rokinon AF 50mm f/1.4 EF II is a fast and compact normal prime lens for Sony E-mount cameras. It present several features that punch well above its class while still maintaining a small and lightweight profile. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture pairs with a nine-blade diaphragm to benefit selective focus and shallow depth of field imaging with smooth bokeh, making it an ideal lens for portraiture. An Ultra Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity. The optical design incorporates 3 High Refractive, 1 Extra Low Dispersion, and 2 Aspherical elements. To compliment the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a customizable focus ring that can be changed to perform other functions through convenient switch located on the barrel. A Linear STM autofocus motor is used to produce quick, smooth, and quiet performance with full-time manual focus override, and a non-rotating filter, along with features like Internal AF and reduced focus breathing make it an optimal lens for video.

Rokinon is one of the names that Samyang lens markets under. In many cases, as in this one, they are the exact same lens with Rokinon costing less. The reviews on both Samyang and Rokinon 50mm F1.4 Mark II are excellent. I found the Rokinon sharp as a tack wide open. Focus speed and accuracy was accurate, although not quite as accurate as a dual motor lens at a much higher cost. Weight and size for this lens versus other 50/1.4 lenses was noticeably less. I don't quite understand the negative reviews on this. People here are complaining why this lens doesn't compete with other lenses that are 2-3 times the price and weight. It's not going to compete with the Sony 50mm GM lenses lets make that clear, but it's sharp and fast enough that most people won't notice. For the price and weight, you won't find a better 50mm that competes with this in terms of image quality and practicality. The closest competitor would be the Sony 50mm 2.5, but you're sacrificing over a stop of light if that matters to your shooting style. Also a side note that the build quality of this lens far surpasses the 50mm 1.8 from Sony, as that's essentially a toy lens in comparison. ... show more

    • AF-C oddly slow
AF-C runs very oddly slow on this lens. AF-S is pretty snappy, slow in comparison to other models like the 135 or 85, but AF-C in video mode craaawwwls at the same settings as my other rokinon and tamron glass. Might be something that can be adjusted in the lens station but I do not own one. Seems unfortunate that I will need to buy another piece of hardware to see if it can be adjusted. Sharpness is overall good center to edge, even wide open. Happy with contrast and color, nothing outlandish that can't be fixed with a simple adjustment. For $500 it's probably the best deal on a 50mm 1.4 you can get, just be aware you may get a quirky copy. ... show more

    • Series 2 lenses are a game changer
As a hobbyist, you really can’t beat these new Rokinon/Samyang lenses. They feel great and the photos look great at a fraction of the cost of a Sigma or Sony G/GM lens. If you’re working on a tighter budget, don’t hesitate to give these a try.

Online reviews lead you to believe this is a great improvement over the Series 1. The lens is super light and plastic feeling. It feels hollow and cheap. The focus motor is slow and noisy and vibrates the lens. Image quality is not great from what I’ve experienced so far. This lens is basically on the same level if not below the cheap Sony 1.8 lens, only it lets in more light. 90% certain I’ll be returning it but I am going to give it more of a chance. So far so good. This lens is very sharp and lightweight. I’m sure it will get lots of use. Let’s just hope that the good performance continues. When I’ve purchased Rokinon/Samyang lenses in the past it has been very hit or miss. I took off 1 star for the item was not as listed in the pre owned listing. I was expecting it not to be in the original box but the back lens cap is not correct and the lens bag is not the original lens bag as the listing states. I don’t want to go through the hassle of a replacement so I will keep it for now. ... show more
