  • Sharp, pretty bokeh and contrasty
Cons: I want the Af 24 and 50mm with the same characteristics now, and they’re not ready yet. Pros: Not too far off my old Canon 1.2 with the 5D2.... except it for Nikon and my D800 :-) I can shoot in near candle light and af is spot on, and snappy (comparatively) with an old D800. Bokeh is creamy and blends beautifully. Feel is beyond the price for sure. Hood is great, if slightly plasticy feeling (well, it is plastic). So... all in all a great buy for me. ... show more

  • Sweet Baby Jesus
So I've been on the market for an 85mm f1.4 lens for quite a while for my D810. The obvious choice would be the Nikkor version, but GAHD DAM it's $1500!!! Whose got that kind of cash to burn?? Sadly, I'm not blessed like that. So I figured I'd get the Sigma Art lens since I already have the 35mm and the 50mm, but that's still around $1200!! Yeah maybe I picked the wrong hobby, but we're not here to judge are we? So that's where this Rokinon/Samyang comes in. Priced at less than half of the Sigma version it's definitely a steal! Plus it has AF!!! A "new" feature for this company apparently. So obviously my financially irresponsible self purchased it right away. Two days later the package arrives and I immediately slap it on my camera and WOOOOAAHHHH!!!! Good lord this thing is beautiful! THE SHARPNESS! THE COLOR! I couldn't believe the photos that came out of this poor man's lens... The bokeh is crazy good for what it is! Super creamy backgrounds!! So creamy, it's pretty much just a gradient! Even with the shallow depth of field, the subject is incredibly sharp. I was blown away. The auto focus is also quite impressive. First off it's near silent. So silent that I thought it was broken, but before I knew it BOOM snapped to focus instantly! Did I mention that I as blown away?! Live view focus though... it's meh. But that's expected, since Nikon DSLR's live view AF is garbage anyways. We Nikon users keep it old-school with that optical viewfinder unlike them youngins with their EVFs. So videographers stay away!! But then again, are you really a videographer if you're using Nikon? This lens is also much smaller and lighter than other offerings which is great for your aging bodies! Not today back pain!!! The exterior is mostly metallic-looking plastic which is totally fine with me. It even has a red ring! You can lie to people and say you have a Canon L lens adapter so now you're a pro! All in all, this lens is a great addition to your full frame line up! It produces photos that are on par with those fancy thousand dollar lenses. If those bougie kids come around to clown on your 3rd party lens, ignore them cus they're a bunch of fools. Remember, more money doesn't make you a better photographer, but less money does! Poor people unite!! WOOHOO! ... show more

  • inconsistent focus
The auto focus is slow and inconsistent. When it works, it's beautiful, but it's 50/50. I struggled for a year calibrating and recalibrating and choosing different focal points trying to make it work as I loved it when it did. It worked much better on live view, but that's now my preferred method. I finally got sick of getting home to find half my images were out of focus and upgraded to a nikon lens which has been heavenly. I wish I would have bought the Nikon lens first and spared myself a lot of grief. ... show more

  • If Bokeh was an ice-cream flavor
This review is coming from 15+ years in photography and having shot with prime lenses from a Nikon perspective. I'm shooting with a Nikon D800. I've also shot with Nikon 85mm 1.8 and 1.4. I received this lens on April 1, 2021 and shot with this Rokinon Lens for about 2-3 days in studio lighting and available light. Based on pictures attached with the Rokinon 85mm 1.4, at this price point, this lens is worth the dollar amount. Very creamy or ice-creamy bokeh =) Some cons I'll list but hey, this is definitely a lens for the one who wants to get great portrait bokeh. Here's my Pros and Cons. Pros: Good Bokeh in certain lighting situations. Price is good design is clean and looks like an expensive lens. Focusing was not too bad. Can't really complain. Quality of picture is good roughly at f2.5 and up. Cons: -Bokeh balls from a strong light source such as the "sun" reflecting from a car or building in background is not pretty-looking. - The lens hood fell off a few times during my shoot making this a pain. There's not lock or snap to know it's secure. -In "certain" lighting conditions chromatic abberation is higly visible in the blurry parts of the image. This is seen in f1.4 - f2.2 maybe 2.5. Defnitely visible when shooting text. It's so bad I almost want to return this. Not yet decided. Remember, in "certain" lighting condtions. Such as hard light or sun hitting hair or whatever object your shooting. -At some points during the 2-3 days of shooting, I had the AF-M switch, on lens, set to M, and it still auto-focused. I tested the next day to confirm and it did it again until it stopped. It appears the mechanics of this switch works after a few atttempts. Did I get a bad lens? Overall, I gave this a 4 star because I do appreciate how cool it looks on my camera and the quality is does offer for the price point. For those who cannot afford a $1,600 lens, this lens will get you close enough quality to that. Want nice photos at a budget price? Get this lens. Cheers! ... show more

  • Not great
Wry disappointed. Its not worth the money. Very slow to focus and slow to lock on. Better using with auto focus off. Color rendition very contrasty. No edge to edge sharpness. I returned

  • The lens is impressive
This lens is super valued, can compare with a canon lens 1.4mm.

  • Manual focus not working right
The media could not be loaded. Tried using the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 lens on Nikon Z50 & Nikon D750 in manual focus mode. The manual focus resets to some baseline every time the camera goes to sleep or is turned off. The manual focus also resets between exposures during a timelapse. We sent the lens to Rokinon service and received another lens with the same issue on both Nikon bodies. We cannot return the product anymore and the lens is of no use to us because we intended on using it for astrophotography on manual focus. This is a 'focus by wire' lens. ... show more
