  • Portrait Beginner
About Me: - beginner hobbyist photographer - primarily an AF shooter, sometimes MF - Portraits > Family > Landscape Camera: Canon EOS R First Impressions (5/20/2022) I really enjoy this lens. It has not come off my body since it arrived. 85 is my favorite focal length and I tend to lean towards warm tones in my edits, so this lens is great! The Sigma 85 1.4 is a bit sharper, but is also unjustifiably more expensive & substantially heavier. I do a lot of walking around shooting and I can really feel the difference after a while. It’s easier to use this because it’s light and produces quality images. My lens arrived with the latest firmware and in brand new condition. Amazon was the seller & distributor. Build: The thing is big! (but surprisingly light!) The actual lens is solid, but the caps & hood feel plastic-y and of lower quality. The lens cap is not very secure and easily pops off. Buttons & Rings: The AF/MF override switch is conveniently placed. The focus ring is fine. I don’t use it enough to comment more on it as I am primarily an AF shooter. Image Quality: The image is great with the signature “Samyang/Rokinon” rendering! It runs on the warmer side, which is IMO is welcome for portrait photography. If it does bother you, color correcting can easily be done in post. There is vignetting but it’s not too terrible (also easily correctable in post). CA is well controlled for this focal length & aperture. The BOKEH is beautiful!! Smooth and creamy. Auto Focus: Focus works great! It’s eye/face AF is sticky with the occasional hunting. Stabilization: Sadly, it is not an IS lens. I do believe the lens is light enough to be mounted on a gimbal like the DJI Ronin S / SC. Lightroom: I use a Canon R and Canon EF-EOS R adapter. When imported in lightroom, it registers as the Samyang 85 f1.4 RF. Value: AMAZING for this price point. You will definitely get your money’s worth. Will follow up as I become more acquainted with this lens. ... show more

  • No reliable lens (included video)
The media could not be loaded. I live in Mexico. I bougth Rokinon AF 85 mm 1.4 EF lens early august 2020 , very fast delivery. I used it on a Canon 6TS without any problem and most of time with a Canon RP. A few days ago I started to use it with Canon M50 and took several shots. However I noticed that some times when turn on M50 camera the image in LCD back screen is blur it does not focus at all even if I press shot button, I can see the letters MF blinking on screen despite the fact lens AF is activated. To have evidence of this problem I started to record video using my cellphone, I noticed that when using M50- Rokkinon lens the EF sensor light keeps on even when camera is turn off. That's why camera drains out battery in 1 day with no use. I sent Rokinon an email, but simply said it is no completely compatible with M-50. Months later I started again to use it whith 6TS and have the same focusing problems, this camera doesn't need adaptor. Now, also I have focusing issues using RP. All 3 cameras work fine with Canon lenses. Conclusion, this is not a realiable lens. Cheaper than a Canon 85 mm but that's why i get a cheaper performance. ... show more

  • Great Portrait Lens for the price!!
I bit the bullet and moved from a APS-C sensor camera to a full from 35MM. I purchased a used Canon EOS 5D Mark III and wanted to get a great portrait lens. I did some research and found some good reviews on this lens and decided to give it a shot. I was shocked at how good it is at the price point. It focuses relatively fast and the lens is sharp. I got my start back in the 80s and 90s as a professional photographer using medium format cameras. I got burnt out and left the business just as it was starting to switch to digital. The sample shot was taken on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with the Rokinon 85mm F1.4 AF Lens for Canon EF. Exposure is f8 at 1/200th and iso 100. I was really blown away when I zoomed in and saw all the sharp detail. ... show more

  • Performance was great, let down by the electronic manual focus
Rokinon is really impressive with cost for performance. I bought this is a hopeful alternative to the Sigma 85, and in all rights it performed extremely well. However, the drawback for me was the electronic manual focus. In itself it isn't bad, but I intend to use this a lot for manual focus video, and I can see some of the stepper motor movement in fine manual focus. Also, the focus ring speed does not always coordinate to the focus motor speed. Good lens, takes great images, but wasn't for me. ... show more

  • Beast of a lens
First off, this this is BIG. For comparison, my Tamron 28-300 DI uses 72mm filters. Prepare to buy a whole new set of filters if you use them. At that point, I'd recommend something like Cokin so all you need is an adapter. As for picture quality, it takes great pictures. It does what it says - f/1.4 blurs out the background, but at night time it allows you to shoot at normal speeds. It's also good for portrait photographers. ... show more

  • Rokinon 85mm F1.4 AF lens is NOT a reliable lens
This was a waste money and time. I am still mad about the purchase, I am very disappointed. The warmth is good when you can finally take a picture that is mot blurry. No matter if the camera is on a tripod or on hand, either the shutter speed of high or low. It is like the lens is not good. I try it with 3 different cameras: a brand new 5Ds, 5D Mark III and 90D. The autofocus or Manual Focus sometimes does not make a difference and some other time, I got lucky, I have a good picture. Image stabilization does not exist with this lens. I had to use my 50, 35, even 70-200 in its place. This is so embarrassing. ... show more
