  • I’d love to see how these were meant to be used
Style: Smokeless
It’s easy to use. It’s sturdy. It isn’t light and I don’t think it’s meant to be. It isn’t fancy. It has sharp edges, came with spots of rust, the side looks like it was dented slightly from the factory, and some of the welds are iffy. That’s why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, but none of that takes away from how well it works. It’s utilitarian, rough around the edges, and if it was cheaper I would have overlooked all of that, but it isn’t. It seems to work really well, very quickly heating up enough to stop smoking. It can require some finesse to run at steady temperature and adding fuel too late can cause smoking but that’s the nature of a solid fuel stove. I think it was actually designed to be a home/small restaurant stove, or maybe for street vendors, in places where solid fuel stoves are a fact of life. It has some clever details that would make it good for use in many non-western kitchens. You can empty the ash without moving the stove, and it appears the wind screen was designed to attach to a chimney and with a pot, wok, or the included lid the exhaust is going to mostly go up the chimney. But I don’t know, as none of that was really mentioned on the included sheet of paper. It has an English language warning label and basic instructions. As for camping, which is what they seem to be marketing it for on Amazon: I have several similar stoves, and for the sort of camping I do any of them would work better, as would most of the sheet metal rocket stoves. That doesn’t take away from this stove at all, but you can get a slightly smaller stove that works on the same principles but the legs fold up, the whole thing is lighter, and at least for me if I’m camping and need extra heat I’m going to cook over a campfire. It can be used, and if it matches your needs it’ll work well, but I won’t be taking it camping. I use it in the back yard “kitchen” with a wok, discada, or even a big stock pot. It needs a short table or even some cinder blocks to raise it to a comfortable height to use while standing, but it’s a decent height to use while sitting. ... show more

  • First burn - beats the heck out of my cindrblock attempt
Style: King
I was intrigued with the setup on this one, with the additional air intake separated from the wood feed. The theory made sense to me. I'd done a cinderblock version that worked, but really needed the air intake to land just right to feed it. After the first burn, I'm impressed with what it did with very limited amount of wood. Twigs..fallen scrap. The stuff that ruins your lawn mower blades. Worked like a charm. Like others, it took me a hot minute to get it started from the top with the bottom damper wide open, but once started, you got the full "rocket" sound. One of the "ears" doesn't fit quite snugly, but it didn't cause any destabilization of a large cast iron pan that would rest on it. I'm planning to use it as almost a "side burner" in the outdoor kitchen...and as long as you can keep up with it, it should perform very well. I appreciate the effort to "raise" it with the threaded extensions. They are perfect if you're sitting in a lawn chair babysitting it. If you want to actually use it "in line" with an outdoor cooking setup, plan for a couple cinder blocks. Overall impressed. I'd love another 9-12" on the infeed and stack, but it works almost exactly as I would have expected. Well done as an outdoor extension to a grill setup. Already looking forward to a science experiment with the kids chasing fallen sticks to feed it. ... show more

  • These could be lifesavers
Style: King
I bought two of these stoves after watching my neighbor boil water in a camping kettle in under 5 minutes using nothing but a handful of small stems and one small pine cone from his lawn. Impressive. I also bought a set of heavy cast iron cookware to use with these stoves as well as a small metal foldable oven for baking. The legs add a good bit of space between the ground and the cooking grate which is much safer than being on the ground, plus, you can adjust them for uneven surfaces. It feel nice and sturdy and I’ve gotten the fire so hot it glows red. Each time after cool down I inspect to see if there is damage but so far there had been none. One thing that I might suggest is to condition all iron surfaces with Crisco or an equivalent cooking grease. It will prevent any rust during storage. ... show more

  • Impressive but not perfect
Style: King
Thicker and much sturdier than I expected. Very basic but a pretty good deal. Only mild complaint would be that it's back heavy and wants to tip over a bit. Easy fix though.

  • Construction quality exceeded my expectations. Good value.
Style: Elite
Since comparable rocket stoves can sell for 4x or 5x the price, I was expecting "cottage-industry" quality construction (welding) and was pleasantly surprised with the this stove's quality and features, such as adjustable inlet air damper and internal grate to prevent fuel from falling into the inlet air/ash tube. Low price trade-off is that the tubes are ~11 gauge steel, whereas stoves selling for ~5x the price advertise ~9.5 gauge steel. ... show more

  • Design flaws making it difficult to cook or carry
Style: Elite
The stove has a great flame when on full burn but that is the nature of a well made rocket stove so its not this company that should be complimented. A couple of good features is that it catches the ashes instead of letting them fall to the ground like many other rocket stoves. The second it that it has a 45 degree feed pipe which many dont have that feed from the bottom. The angle helps the stove feed itself if a thin log is laid in the pipe that can slide down into the burn chamber as it is consumed. But there are two flaws that are problems. One is the slant on the fins that hold the pots/pans on top. This angle is a major problem if trying to cook in smaller based pan or pot as seen in the pics. The angle on the fins allows shorter based pans/pots to slide to an angle that would cause what you are cooking to get burned or unevenly cooked. That would be a major problem for someone who uses pots and pans with a base shorter than 9". Pics 2 and 3 show how a pot or pan canters when placed on the angled fins. Larger based pots/pans are needed for them to sit level. The other major flaw is that if someone wanted to move the stove, they would have to wait till it cooled down enough so one can grab the welded side handle since the swiveling carry handle cannot be used since the fins block it from being held properly for carrying as shown in the last pic. ... show more
