  • Nice Bandsaw For The Price!!
I am a serious/advanced hobbyist, having only a 2-car garage to serve as my "shop". I work in both metal and wood. I had been needing a vertical band saw for the longest time just to be able to cut irregular shapes. I already have a Shop Fox horizontal metal-cutting band saw (Model W1715)that easily handles all of my metal-cutting requirements....works vertically as well (in a pinch). So, I needed a nice vertical bandsaw, dedicated to wood-use only. I even went down to one of the warehouse stores and purchased a smaller 9" bandsaw, but never opened it. It was a total POS with lots of plastic parts. Somehow, someway, I happened on this Rikon 10-inch model, watched some vids on YouBoobTube, and determined it was a much better unit than what I had just bought. After all, this 10-inch comes from a line of much larger bandsaw models from Rikon. So I bought it, and returned the POS back from where it came for credit. I was pleased to see that it was all-steel construction, even the doors. A blade was already on this saw, which I removed and replaced with a much better blade from Olsen. Very easy to change blades, that is, if you've done it before, which I have. This saw cuts through much thicker wood than I'll ever throw at it, and is quite handy and well-made. Initial set-up does require some tweaking of the upper and lower bearings for correct clearances, and all of this is explained in the book. I don't really have much to complain about....would have liked to seen a light attached to this unit, and, the table leveling device could be a bit better, but all in all, I was able to get the blade square with the table. I may replace the bearings as they seem a bit noisy, but I'm in no hurry to do this. I do plan on buying a good goose-neck lamp with an LED spot in it (I've changed ALL of my machinery lights to LED...they work great, last a long time, and most importantly, they run cool and don't burn up light sockets with heat!). I'm not a fan of mag-base lights as they can scratch the finish of a machine such as this. I'm leaning towards installing a small "under-cabinet" strip of halogen lights just under the angled top section of this bandsaw, if I can find a strip small enough. Amazon has plenty to choose from. The adjustable cutting guide is nice on this unit as it slides up and down by a gear, turned by a knob....I wasn't expecting that; figured it would be manual. But this allows for a hands-free adjustment of cutting guide away from the blade. It also has a lower round port for a dust collection system, or in my case, the Shop Vac! A bit of weatherstripping here and there should help to seal the unit for better suction. Remember that this unit only comes with a fence, and does not include the mitre gadget. If you really need this kind of precision, I would go to the extra expense of a good magnetic fence since this is a cast-iron table. The included fence is just "okay"; nothing really great (as expected). Like most everyone who is reading this review, I would much rather have a nice, big, 19-inch /220 volt bandsaw from DoAll....but until I can move into a large, air conditioned, and well-equipped shop like Norm Abram's, small machines like this will have to do. So all in all, this is a very nice machine, and much, much better than the stuff at the box stores. Remember to clean off the table with some thinner and then give it a good coating of paste wax to prevent the table from rusting. Good Luck!! ... show more

  • Great little saw
This saw is great. It's gotta be one of the best 9-10" bandsaws on the market short of the deluxe version of the same saw. It has a lot of features that most other 9-10" bandsaws just don't. For example, this saw has ball-bearing blade guides (The only other one I'm seeing with that is the Wen), featurewise the Wen has more stuff, but I've heard the QC can be suspect, so this is probably better for that reason alone. Assembly was super easy. The instruction manual had just the right amount of detail and was written in an understandable way (Which is important). From the time I got it out of the box I was making test cuts within about 15-20 minutes after getting it assembled, the blade properly tensioned and aligned. As far as the blade that comes with this... It's mediocre at best, but it is better than the central machinery saw I got a couple weeks ago and promptly returned. It's a fairly thick blade, so don't expect to cut tight curves with it. I played with it until my thinner Olson blade came in, and promptly replaced it, and was happier with the new blade. I'm not going to knock Rikon for that, I bought it knowing the blade wasn't really the blade I intended to use with the saw for the purposes I wanted... The other nice thing to note, the dust port on the saw is a standard size (Unlike some competitors) so your shop vac should just plug right in. After having had this for about a month and having used it for several projects, I'm quite pleased with the purchase. I don't think I miss the extra features from the deluxe version. If you're like me and you don't have the space (I work out of a one car garage) for a 14" saw or larger, this is the saw for you. ... show more

  • Great value for a well made machine
Since moving into a much smaller home and giving up my large shop, I've had to make a number of compromises in the equipment I use. My old 14" band-saw was just too large to fit. The 10" bench-top Rikon has proved to be a capable replacement. It cuts true and is easy to set up and use. The quality of build is exceptional. My only complaint is the fence which requires fiddling to set; but once set it does work. Fortunately, their latest model has an improved fence which will work fine for this one. ... show more

  • A reasonable value (if you understand its limitations)
A solid machine with power and capability to be expected from a band saw of this scale. For folks thinking they are going to save a few bucks and then get the full function of a floor standing or horizontal - think again. This is a great little space saver and with a little skill/patience can handle some decent projects. Taking the time to get to know how saws of this kind work is a good idea and can really help getting the most out of this one was well. Think about buying extra blades (maybe with some different tooth counts) - could save the day if you're mid-project and break one. I'm going with a "thumbs-up" on this one. ... show more
