  • The NaySayers Are Misleading; this Unit Works Fine!
I did need to install another 240V circuit to accommodate this tankless hot water heater, but my circuit-breaker box had the extra capacity, so it was simple to have done, and now, having an unlimited supply of hot water for as long as I want it is more than just convenient. No more long showers cut short by suddenly cold water! No more waiting after (or before) a shower or load of laundry for a whole tankful of water to get hot enough! No more planning out major hot-water use to avoid running out! As far as I can tell, the temperature control is accurate and dependable; I changed the setting to a few degrees higher than the installer left it, and I noticed the difference immediately. I can't imagine household use requiring a degree-by-degree control of the water temperature, but since the control is digital, why not take advantage of the capability? It's so much clearer than some "hot" "medium-hot" "medium" labels that leave everyone guessing, anyway. I bought this unit here because the price was relatively low and I could have the unit delivered to my door, instead of having to drive a 55-miles round trip for a more limited selection. I bought the unit with one level more capacity than I actually needed because the extra expense would disappear over the long life of the unit and I'd be certain never to run out of hot water. I bought the Rheem because of the brand's reputation. As for the "nay-sayers," I and some of my friends who inquired about tankless heaters were told tales of low groundwater temperatures and other things that (1) turned out not to be true and (2) didn't agree with the manufacturer's (and other professionals') information. I do not live where it gets very, very cold in winter, but neither does the plumbing contractor who advised me against this kind of heater; either he's ignorant, makes a lot more profit when he installs a hot water tank, or he's unwilling to learn about electric circuitry in 21st-century homes. If you live where winters are really long and cold, do your research and learn what you need to know, sure, but don't let misinformation keep you from having state-of-the-art hot water. ... show more

  • Requires Maintenance...Often...
So, after 8 months of use, hot water stopped. Turns out, we have hard water and SO much calcium built up on the first heating element that it slowed the gpm out of the hot water faucet taps to a drizzle. Before this happened, unit worked nicely (unlimited hot water for our big soaking tub!). Could run two showers at once with no problem. Only problem was that we couldn't run our 10 gpm soaking tub faucet open all the way - The unit couldn't keep up with that. My biggest warning is that, if you have minimum filtration and no water softener, you will need to take off cover (four easy) and unscrew the 3 heating elements to inspect/clean them every "6 to 12 months." It would have been nice to know about this before we bought it. In my other house, didn't have to touch water heater for 15 years; This one I'll be checking every 4-6 months! So, it would have been REALLY nice if the instruction manual would have talked about this a little more. Customer support was great (after the ridiculous 40 minute wait on the phone). They emailed me a digital user trouble shooting guide that talked more about inspecting and cleaning hearing elements and even mailed some replacement parts that they thought may have been the issue. My heating element broke off and is STILL stuck in the small copper housing tube. Been soaking it in vinegar as suggested to dissolve calcium (not working too well, in the tiny copper housing). Ended up purchasing a new unit, now that we know we'll need to just maintain it better. So just be warned - DO NOT IGNORE THESE UNITS AS THEY NEED CLEANED OFTEN OR YOU'LL BE REPLACING YOUR UNIT! Otherwise, happy so far. ... show more

  • Easy Set Up and even temperature
I replaced a tankless hot water heater, which cracked due unusually low freezing weather with this Rheem unit. The previous unit had significant variability in temperature. I bought the 27KW unit which is more than I needed for the house to be sure that I had adequate capacity. I am pleased with the steady temperature control and easy setting on the temperature with an LED display. While I used a licensed plumber to install the unit, it was a simple installation. I added a water filter because the water is very hard here. Amazon showed a complete kit for the heater, filter, and cut-off valves, with ports for easy draining and flushing. This will resolve concerns with hard water accumulation on the heating elements with the filter and regular flushing. The heating elements are replaceable, if needed. This unit is much more versatile than my old unit. Very pleased. ... show more

  • Only review you need to read, highly recommended!
My old 80 gallon hot water tank was on it's way out so I did research on a replacement. I could replace the tank with another 80 gallon hot water heater (no thanks), I could go with a hybrid 80 gallon hot water heater (not bad), or I could go with a tankless system (ideal). There are pros and cons to each but I ended up choosing the Rheem 27kw tankless hot water heater. I read good and bad reviews on this system but I have nothing but great things to say. I had to have an electrician come and install an additional (2) 40 amp breakers and 8/2 wire for around $450 so I had a total of 3 lines hooked up to the system (essentially 1 line/breaker for each heating element). At first I was getting only luke warm water so I called Rheem tech support and the advisor was extremely helpful and told me to check a few things. Within 10 minutes it was working perfectly. (The issue had to do with the install, not the product). Be sure you're getting 240V to each element before your electrican leaves. Nevertheless, we initially set the temp to 140 and was way too hot. We dialed it down to 125 and it is perfect. We have 4 full bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, etc. We can easily have 3 showers on simultaneously. Best part is the hot water never runs out and ultimately saves you money. 2 thumbs up! ... show more

  • Better than the big bulky heater I had.
Endless supply of hot water is great, only thing is it takes a minute for the water to get hot at the far end of the house. Control is simple. I haven’t got my first electric bill yet since installing the heater.
