Edit: A note that I forgot to touch on, but my initial unit had a hair between the screen and the frame, strangely enough. I'm unsure if it was a random fluke or a QC issue, but it's something of importance to note. Thankfully, I got a replacement in no time. The RG477M is premium is every way possible. To preface the review, I've owned several handhelds of varying power. This one is, without a doubt, the most premium feeling handheld that I've ever used and is absolute worth the purchase. The display is phenomenal. It's very vibrant and clear. It's 4:3 which is perfect for Gamecube/PS2 and below. While it's not an OLED panel, I find myself not really minding. It's a fantastic screen, probably one of the best non-OLED panels I've seen on these handhelds. The performance is incredible. The Mediatek chip in this is easily able to handle 2-3x resolution on PS2 and Gamecube with absolute ease. I was even able to use Gamehub to install some of my Steam games and that worked fantastically. It's been great with everything I've thrown at it so far. Battery life is great. I was able to play an N64 game for over 6 hours straight without issue. More powerful games will probably drop that down to ~3 hours, but thankfully it charges very quickly. The feel itself is beyond measure. The face buttons feel fantastic, the DPAD is wonderfully balanced and not too stiff nor mushy. The sticks feel great and don't stick out too much. I wouldn't recommend putting this in your pocket without a case because of the sticks, but otherwise it's very portable. The heat on it isn't too bad either. You can definitely feel it heat up, but it doesn't get too hot that it bothers me. Overall, while this is an expensive device, it nails everything that it tries to do. It plays pretty much anything you throw at it, the aluminum shell feels amazing in your hands, and the display and feel of the device is incredible. If you want a powerful handheld and don't mind spending the extra cash on a metal shell, this is a no brainer. This is one for the best handhelds Anbernic has released without a doubt and I couldn't recommend it more.

Five stars doesn’t do this justice. It’s a 10 star. It is groundbreaking in my life. This device changed gaming for me. I was playing the switch. I had a PS Vida. I’ve had PlayStations, my favorite PS Vita. This has replaced it. I had a ton of games on the PS Vita. This right here replaced my PS Vita my PS two PS one PS P Nintendo GameCube Nintendo Wii all the Nintendo entertainment system retro arcade final burn, but you gotta set it up, but I recommend it and have Gemini help you set it up with your backup ROMs. Just stunning. Now it’s not just about playing video games. It’s about doing my research organizing and playing. That whole thing right there the whole cycle it is quite stunning and unbelievable in my life. My brain is absolutely ecstatic. I bought an RG 34XX for a friend of mine and I just purchased one for me to play GBA games but I’m also playing other retro games like Nintendo game boy and super Nintendo wow. And then I recently purchased an RG 476H to play with my daughter anybody in my family or friends you can play local on your own handheld with this using retro arch. The reason why I recommend Gemini is because I’ve been using chat box in Google and YouTube, but Gemini is the best because you can ask her to send you a video links for games quick reviews and you can just click on it. They have access to YouTube. So Gemini will be good for doing your research on your video games and also to set this up. You can straight up. Ask it to help you one step at a time you can’t even take pictures of your screen and then it’ll guide you next step-by-step and also this thing you can connect to your TV if you didn’t know and also you can play somebody over the Internet in another country or state. You can save your games. You can just use the handheld device to play with controllers through YouTube. Use it as an as a monitor. It is great and I’m in love.

Prior to this one, I have used a very similar Anbernic 405M and I didn't like it quite much due to its mediocre performance. IMO, 405M was compromised over its specs; Despite having a heavy body, the processor on 405M just wasn't powerful enough to play 2000's titles. There were far many better options than 405M and the aluminum body alone couldn't justify its price. Two year and 6 months later, Anbernic has come back with this RG477M, offering the same 4:3 aspect ratio as 405M, but with a 4.7 inch, 120hz big bright display and a more powerful processor that's capable enough to drive more modern retro titles. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to play under the "correct" aspect ratio. Although, there are games (e.g. Resident Evil 4) support both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, they are far less common. The majority of the retro titles support only near 4:3 aspect ratio and widescreen hack isn't always available to them. Anbernic understood this requirement well, not only by making the handheld 4:3 but also by raising the display’s refresh rate to 120 Hz, making BFI feasible for the first time on lower-end handheld devices. In this perspective, RG477M doesn't really have any competitors--it is the only handheld device on the market (including the upcoming ones) that supports this feature.

The device is good and runs most games well all the way up to PS2, 3DS and maybe some Wii games. The size is perfect but it’s a bit on the heavier side. For me, at least where it didn’t shine, is when playing custom Doom wads. The android apps to play those types of games aren’t there. On windows and iOS, you have pretty good software to run custom Doom games. Another thing that makes the handheld not that good, is the difficulty in transferring files from the micro sd card, to the on board storage. Since it’s android, there shouldn’t be no difficulty at all in doing such a simple function, but alas, it was impossible. With the RG477m, Anbernic is going in the right direction. The device has minor imperfections, mostly pertaining to software. A Linux version of this device would be something nice to see, maybe something running Batocera
