  • A Classic with a Modern Spin
This boombox is a modern spin on a iconic piece of technology from decades long gone. You get an AM, FM, and shortwave radio tuner, USB and SD audio media player, a bluetooth speaker and a cassette deck all in one. The retro styling is reminiscent of designs from the '80s and '90s and the unit, while a bit smaller than its period correct predecessors, feels solid in the hand. I had no problems playing my old cassettes and I did not feel like I was at risk of the unit "eating" any of them during testing. The unit also gets quite loud. It doesn't have the bass of a full bookshelf unit, but I have not turned this up more than half way out of fear it could damage the speakers. Lastly, you get a few power options including one that was not available 30 - 40 years ago via 2x 18650 rechargeable lithium batteries (MUST have a button top). Other power options include 6x D cell batteries or wall power with an AC cord or an option to use a 9v DC power supply with a barrel connector. Batteries and the DC power supply are not included, but you do get an AC power cord (stored in the battery compartment). I did run into a few things I did not particularly like with this boombox. While the unit does have an analog style tuner, the frequency spacing is very tight. Just a slight turn on the tuning knob could mean you just tuned past several stations. The dial is very stiff which helps in that regard but you need to be precise, especially outside the FM band. The knobs and dials are functional, but the switch that selects the modes did not feel particularly great. You might get an electrical "pop" noise when switching between the modes. The biggest issue I had was with the units inability to reject interference from EMI and cell phone GSM signals. I had issues with extra EMI noise when using the cassette functionality and GSM cell phone signal interference when using the radio and bluetooth modes. While this can be mostly solved by moving the unit away from these interference signals, it could be difficult in tight spaces to do that. It appears that the cassette deck is supposed to be an auto stop unit, but during testing I could not get this to function correctly. Another limitation with the unit is according to the manual, stereo sound is only available in the Bluetooth and SD/USB media playback modes, everything else is mono only. For compact unit it has quite a lot of features including some that you may not have found on vintage model boomboxes from the past. However, the drawbacks give me pause to recommend it outright. The normal retail price of this unit I feel is a bit high all things considered, but could be worth it if it were lower or if there was a good rebate available. I definitely like the versatility in power options and operating modes, but the issues with single interference I could definitely do without. ... show more

  • Solid noisemaker
I admit, I picked this up for nostalgia, not really expecting great things from it. If the speakers were silvery grey, it'd look like about a half or 2/3 scale version of a boom box I had growing up. That said? Surprisingly decent sound, as well as radio reception (as well as I could get the two shortwave bands, which is generally "not," which was true for the original radio of mine too!) The only thing I didn't get to test was the cassette - I thought I still had some, but apparently not. It paired nicely and easily with my phone as well, giving very good sound. Honestly, this was a great little pickup. No, it's not giving expensive sound system sound, but it DOES give suprisingly good (and just plain good) sound. Worth a look! ... show more

  • There's better out there
When I saw this modern boombox, it reminded me of the 80’s in looks and features. Unfortunately the quality and performance aren’t on par with those 80’s models. The silver plastic looks cheap in person. The tuning knob is so tight, it’s hard to turn. The function switch has too much play and makes me sure it is going to stop working after a few months. The sound quality is what you might expect from the size and quality of the speakers. The unit is capable of putting out a lot of volume. In fact, the volume knob was never turned above halfway in my testing or I’d be deafened, but you can’t fine tune it at all. The bass adjustment doesn’t provide more bass as much as just ups the volume and fills in the sound a bit. Increasing treble makes everything tinny sounding and unlistenable. Trying out the radio, there is a lot of static and flutter on all bands. Even on FM, this makes it hard to lock in a station. Strangely another model boombox from this company had one of the best tuners I’ve found. I actually tried the stereos side by side and I still have no idea why this one struggles to lock in stations. The cassette player works as expected on all functions. It does not stop automatically when it reaches the end of the tape in fast forward or rewind so be ready to hit the Stop button so you don’t stretch or otherwise damage your old tapes. In tape mode, there is a constant, fairly loud humming and the rare “pop!” happening even if you’re not actively playing, rewinding or fast forwarding a tape. You can even hear it over the leader tape when you have a cassette in. I found it really annoying and had to turn the function switch to Off while fast forwarding/rewinding tapes so I wouldn’t hear it. Beyond these basic features, it also has more modern options utilizing Bluetooth, USB and memory cards. I was able to record from the radio onto a USB key. I also was able to do the same with cassettes and then play the songs I’d just recorded by long pressing the mode button. Recording quality was actually pretty good and I was happy to discover none of the odd humming came through. I didn’t test the Bluetooth capability since I have better speakers for that. The battery situation here is unique. You can use either four D batteries or a couple of rechargeables if you can find ones to fit. It would be better if they came with it so you could bring the stereo to camp, to the beach or to the woods and it would be useful during power outages. Even if the price had to be raised a little, it might be worth it. ... show more
