  • Very nice camera system. Very good technical support.
I bought and installed this system just about exactly one year ago, in September 2019. I installed the system myself. I bought two extra cameras so I have 10 cameras installed all together. Running the wiring through the house was the biggest part of the labor because it is installed in a two-story house with 10 cameras mounted outside to cover the entire outside of the house. The system was fairly easy to set up and to get up and running. I had a few questions which Reolink technical support answered quickly. The technical information and instructions that came with the system a year ago were not super detailed but they were adequate. They pretty much told you what you needed to do, but if you had questions about it, there wasn’t much depth to the instructions to explain any questions that you might have. Like I said any questions I had, I just emailed to Reolink, and I typically got an answer back within a day. I found the technical support to be extremely responsive and very capable. There are lots of other reviews about how well the system works so I won’t go into all that here. Please see my review for the “Reolink POE Camera 5MP Super HD 4X” zoom camera under the user name of WD that discusses my experience with trying to use the cameras for motion detection alarms being pushed to my iPhone or email. If you’re planning to do that, please read that review. In a nutshell, cameras using this technology really don’t work well for motion detection when the cameras are mounted outside. The cameras detect changes in the pixels in the camera image and interpret those changes as motion. That means that bugs, wasps, moths, spiderwebs, sun movement, cloud movement, and everything else that moves in the picture can cause a motion alarm. You can try to filter that by setting up detection zones and adjusting the sensitivity, but the technology just doesn’t work well for motion detection outside. When the sun changes the shadows on your front porch, or a shadow from a cloud passes over your front yard, a whole bunch of the pixels change, and there’s nothing you can do to filter that out. After playing with it for months and trying all kinds of different settings, I finally turned the alarm notifications off so the only motion alarms I get go to the NVR so I can look at them later if I want to. Having the alerts go to your cell phone or your email just blows up your cell phone and email incoming messages. This is NOT a reflection on Reolink, it’s just the way this technology works. I did quite a bit of research on the Internet about trying to solve this problem, and apparently that’s just the way it is. There don’t seem to be any good answers out there. All in all though, the system works fantastic. After my system had been installed for about nine months, I had video loss on all the cameras at the same time. Working through the problem with Reolink we figured out that the NVR was bad, and after one or two email exchanges they arranged for Amazon to send me a brand new NVR. No hassle, no headache, easy as pie. Amazon even shipped the new NVR to me immediately, before I had sent back the old one. I am not sure, but the problem with the NVR may have been caused by a thunderstorm that we had in the vicinity around the time of the NVR went bad. At any rate, I am very happy with the system and very happy with a Reolink’s technical support. They really seem to go out of their way to be responsive and to help you out. One more comment about motion detection. What I finally settled on was using infrared motion detectors outside that sounded a voice alarm inside the house, to alert me when somebody is on the front porch or on the breezeway. These work well because they use infrared technology and only alarm when they detect a sudden temperature change in front of the sensor. So now if somebody walks up on my front porch, the Reolink system is of course recording the video of that happening, the infrared motion detector sounds an alert inside the house, and I can get on my iPhone, iPad, or NVR System monitor, and look and see who’s out there. This set up has worked really well for me. Of course if you’re not home you don’t know that somebody walked up on the front porch at the time of the event. But if you notice anything strange, you can go to the NVR system and look at all the alerts that happened during that time frame and it will have captured that motion detection alarm and video on the NVR. The infrared motion detection system that I am using is a Voice Alert System 6 that I bought through Amazon. It handles up to six channels and allows you to record voice alerts to tell you which channel is going off. At any rate, I am happy with this Reolink system. Given it’s relatively low cost and the capabilities that it has, I am well satisfied. If I ever get around to it I might add another camera or two, and install a second HDD so it will store more data. With 10 cameras feeding the NVR it records about four or five days of video, which is all that I really need right now. ... show more

  • Still love it after 2 years of ownership
Updated: I've had this for 2 years and still love it. It's indispensable for keeping my farm animals safe, seeing what's going on around the property day and night. Our setup is 16 cameras with total 2500 feet of cable; The cameras have been out in the rain, snow, ice, summer heat, dust and still work great. Reolink support has been awesome - only needed them a couple of times over the past 2 years -- first was a mysterious config issue which they diagnosed and solved; the second was last week when the transformer went out. We're out of warranty now but they still helped to diagnose the issue and we're back in action. Just having it out of commission for a few days showed us how much we rely on it. Being able to see that all is well inside the barns at 2am - wonderful. Even have a camera on the homing pigeons (yeah) - so fascinating to see them doing their thing when humans aren't around. We still just sit and watch it. If we have visitors, we all sit and watch it. Ok, that may be weird. Here's my original review -- Day 3 and I love it. I started intending to buy 1 camera, bought 8, added 4 more. Now up to 12 and figuring out that I need (ok, want) more. My use is for farm cam to keep an eye on animals, so night vision/audio/POE and being affordable enough for multiple locations were my key purchase requirements. Has already brought invaluable peace of mind, and is just plain fun to watch (yes, we sit watching the security cameras). The color image is very nice; the night vision is great. I have it inside a goat barn, horse barn and pigeon loft and it is very clear even in nighttime low light (when it goes to black & white). I don't know that it would be mug shot level quality, but I do know I can tell which goat is being bad in the dark goat barn now. Also have it on several outdoor areas, where it's color late into the evening. Instructions are simple, but too simple and lacking some detail I would have liked; would have been nice to note somewhere that password needs a number (and special character?). Without any error message, that was just trial and error. Kind of a bummer for first experience with it, but once I was through that bit, everything else was so easy. POE is the way to go. Can't believe I even pondered on that for a day or two like I did. Installing a camera is literally 3 screws, drilling a hole for cable if needed, plugging in the cable on the camera to the ethernet cable, then the ethernet cable to the DVR - done! The DVR defaulted to auto add, so wait a few seconds and the new camera shows up. Maybe I'll put it on the internet sometime (and I can see from other reviewers that can be a project), but for now, straight out of the box and not connected to my network does exactly what I want. Some other notes -- 1. Another reviewer noted that the trick to audio is to make sure the DVR is set to record audio in addition to the camera being turned on for audio - very helpful. 2. I dropped one camera (yes I did) and it wasn't damaged at all. These seem sturdy. 3. After figuring out the 3-way articulation, it was easy to set up cameras pointing exactly where I wanted them. Though I went through a phase where things were at various angles (kind of modern art) then realized the barrel rotates too so now everything's level. 4. The packaging was hilarious. Did they have a competition to see how much equipment would fit into the smallest box? Everything was well packed and nothing was even out of place. It was just the densest packing job I've seen for a while. 5. Really glad I got the 16-channels because now I realize that everything needs to have a camera on it.... meadow, woods, pond....how did we get by without this? 6. The night vision gives such a peace of mind; that was one reason I bought this particular camera system. These cameras have 36 IR LEDs, so more than the usual. An added bonus (other than not having to go out to the barn at 2am to check on them) is being able to see the amount of animal stuff that happens when humans aren't around.... fascinating ... show more
